Raducanu back at Wimbledon as British number one but tempers expectations

Straits Times20 hours ago

LONDON - The first round of Wimbledon begins on Monday with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz seeking a hat-trick of titles at the All England Club while women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka resumes her quest for a first major this year after two runner-up finishes.
TOP WOMEN'S MATCH: EMMA RADUCANU V MINGGE XU
Emma Raducanu strides onto the grasscourts of Wimbledon on Monday as the British number one, a world away from the wide-eyed teenager who burst onto the scene at the All England Club four years ago.
"It does feel like a long time ago. A lot has happened in the last four years," Raducanu told reporters, reflecting on her meteoric rise from obscurity to the fourth round in 2021, a run that preceded her astonishing U.S. Open triumph later that year.
Raducanu faces 17-year-old British wildcard Mingge Xu, who will be making her own Grand Slam debut this year.
"It's good to see a new generation, it keeps us on our toes. It keeps us hungry to improve. It's just healthy competition between all of us," Raducanu added.
The intervening years have been more of a cautionary tale, as injuries and the constant changing of coaches prevented the 22-year-old from building on that early success.
A recent back injury also forced her to withdraw from the Berlin Open and Raducanu arrives at Wimbledon with a question mark over her physical condition, saying her back is not yet at 100%.
Once the darling of British expectations, Raducanu now seeks to manage them carefully, speaking with the hard-earned wisdom of someone who has experienced both the summit and the struggle of professional tennis.
"Truthfully I don't expect much from myself this year," she said. "I know I've just been dealing with certain things. I just want to go out there and embrace the moment, embrace the occasion."
TOP MEN'S MATCH: TAYLOR FRITZ V GIOVANNI MPETSHI PERRICARD
While most top seeds fine-tuned their game on Wimbledon's pristine practice courts this week, Taylor Fritz was busy collecting silverware on England's south coast, a strategy the American hopes could finally unlock his Grand Slam potential.
The ninth seed arrives at the All England Club as the in-form player on grass having claimed two titles, beating Alexander Zverev on his home turf to lift the Stuttgart Open before he defended his Eastbourne Open title on Saturday.
"One more title and I might have to buy a house here," quipped Fritz after clinching his fourth Eastbourne crown in six editions on Saturday.
Fritz's unconventional preparation, playing competitively right up to the start of Wimbledon while rivals opt for closed practice sessions, represents a calculated gamble for a player whose Grand Slam performances have failed to match his seeding.
Despite enjoying fourth-seed status at both the Australian Open and the French Open this year, the 27-year-old American failed to reach the second week at both majors.
But where some players might see risks related to fatigue with such a tight turnaround, Fritz sees a competitive advantage.
"It is what it is, having to play at Wimbledon on Monday," Fritz said.
"I'd rather go into a tournament with a lot of confidence than being there for the whole week just practising."

Norris showed his character after Canada, says Stella

SPIELBERG, Austria - McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris's character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still needed "to polish a few things" to become the finished article, however, in a Formula One season that is turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. "The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgement. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella. "The speed is there -- Lando pole position in Monaco... he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. "We just have to polish a few things in executions and results which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger." The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag following a near collision. "There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella. "We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. "I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and even more united." Norris's win cut the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season but Stella expects him to rectify that. "In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said. "There is absolutely no reason why not -- the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in. "The most important thing is the back-to-back victory is for McLaren." Timoci Tavatavanawai among five new caps in All Blacks squad for France Series

Timoci Tavatavanawai among five new caps in All Blacks squad for France Series – Timoci Tavatavanawai was one of five uncapped players named in the All Blacks squad on June 23 for the July Series against France, with the Fiji-born centre earning his first Test call-up at the age of 27 after a superb Super Rugby season. Tavatavanawai's power and pace, along with his ability to turn the ball over at the breakdown, earned him a place in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific dream team but he might find it tougher to break into the New Zealand midfield. Coach Scott Robertson has brought Jordie Barrett straight back into his squad after a sabbatical in Ireland with Leinster, and also recalled powerhouse Quinn Tupaea after three injury-blighted seasons. 'It's always a challenge to pick the best players in the country,' he said. 'You look through the whole season, you look for reliability, the ability to keep turning up, their skill sets under pressure, how they complement the group. 'It's a hell of a team.' Tavatavanawai said it had been an emotional moment for him and his family when he heard that his dream of an All Blacks call-up had been fulfilled. 'It means everything,' he said. 'I left (home) when I was 16. My brother and sister were about 13 and I've missed a crucial part of their growing up. 'All that sacrifice comes up to this moment, so it's pretty special. 'I think that's why mum pretty much straight away jumped in my arms.' Flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi and hooker Brodie McAlister are two other experienced players who have earned their first call-ups in their late 20s on the back of standout domestic seasons. 'Du'Plessis is the ultimate story of what it takes to keep working and absolute desire to be an All Black,' forwards coach Jason Ryan said of the 28-year-old openside. There was no place in the squad for openside Dalton Papali'i or blindside Ethan Blackadder, with Kirifi one of only five loose forwards selected, along with Samipeni Finau, Ardie Savea, Wallace Sititi and Luke Jacobson. Jacobson picked up a knock in the Super Rugby final and the uncapped No. 8 Christian Lio-Willie will join the squad as injury cover along with winger Emoni Narawa, who will make up the numbers while Anton Lienert-Brown completes his recuperation from a broken collarbone. Powerful loosehead prop Ollie Norris and the Netherlands-born lock Fabian Holland round out the quintet of uncapped players named by Robertson. New Zealand host France in the opening Test in Dunedin on July 5 before further clashes in Wellington and Hamilton the following weekends. Meanwhile, Australia fullback Tom Wright said the Wallabies were not reading a great deal into the British and Irish Lions' 28-24 loss to Argentina in their tour opener on June 21. The Lions party arrived in Perth on June 22 to prepare for their first tour match in Australia against Super Rugby Pacific side Western Force on June 28. 'I wouldn't read a whole lot into it, it was a pretty thrilling game... there was plenty of running rugby,' Wright said in Sydney on June 23 at the Wallabies training camp for their warmup match against Fiji. 'Is that the side they might roll out? Maybe or maybe not, there were a lot of big names that obviously didn't play... 'The Argentinians were really good (but) I wouldn't (say) that the Lions played really poorly. 'There's also that it's a bunch of guys trying to come together for the first time.'
