Quebec police arrest 22 ‘high-risk' sex offenders in provincewide operation
Québec provincial police say they have arrested 22 convicted sex offenders in an operation involving 17 municipal police forces.
Provincial police say that between June 2 and 13, officers monitored 69 people who were considered to have a 'high risk of reoffending.'
Police arrested 14 people for breach of conditions, sexual offences or other crimes.
They underwent eight arrest warrants for failing to comply with the federal Sex Offender Information Registration Act.
Provincial police say more than 85 officers participated in the operation in cities including Montreal, Québec City, Longueuil, Laval and Gatineau.
They say all of the people arrested have either appeared in court or will do so soon.

Social Sharing Quebec's anti-corruption squad is conducting a raid at the head office of the province's automobile insurance board in connection with its investigation into the SAAQclic fiasco. The investigative squad, known by its French acronym UPAC, has been investigating the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) since the end of February. The SAAQ's headquarters are located on Jean-Lesage Boulevard in Quebec City. On Wednesday morning. it confirmed operation was underway in a brief statement sent to Radio-Canada. UPAC said it won't provide any other information. "We won't go any further in order to not compromise the collection of information, protect the integrity of the evidence as well as the safety and reputation of the people who could may be involved," the statement reads. In 2023, the automobile insurance board rolled out its online platform, SAAQclic. The rollout of the new service was chaotic and sparked a customer crisis. It also led to a report by the auditor general, which revealed that the SAAQclic project was $500 million over budget. Since April, the issues with the SAAQclic rollout have been the subject of a public inquiry. According to Radio-Canada sources, about 20 UPAC officers took part in Wednesday's operation. In a brief statement of its own on Wednesday, the SAAQ said that it was "fully co-operating" with UPAC's ongoing investigation.

An officer pulled the car over on Mayfield Road on Tuesday after noticing the mattress wasn't secured in any way to the vehicle. 'Gravity alone is not enough,' OPP Const. Ian Michel stated in a social media post about the incident. The driver was charged with having an insecure load, unnecessary slow driving, and careless driving. 'Loads must be secured to the vehicle with proper restraints and strapping,' Michel concluded.

Pedestrian killed, highway closed after crash in Pitt Meadows, B.C.
A fatal crash in Pitt Meadows has closed a portion of the Lougheed Highway Wednesday morning. (Courtesy: Drive BC) Motorists are being advised to expect delays on Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, B.C., following a fatal collision involving a pedestrian early Wednesday morning. Cpl. Dave Noon of the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service said crews had been deployed to the major highway, also known as Highway 7, at Harris Road for a 'serious vehicle incident' involving a pedestrian. The statement, posted to social media site X, was made just before 4:30 a.m. An officer from the scene has since confirmed the crash was fatal. Shortly after 3:30 a.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP said Mounties were responding to a collision in the 19000 block of the highway, in a statement posted to X. All westbound lanes of Lougheed Highway have been closed. 'Expect significant delays while we investigate. There is no anticipated time for reopening,' said Noon.
