Bangkok Festival set to draw 10,000 visitors, bolster Malaysia's 2026 tourism drive
BANGKOK, June 29 (Bernama): The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture is targeting 10,000 visitors for the Malaysia Food and Culture Festival 2025, held from June 29 to June 30, 2025, at Samyan Mitrtown, Bangkok.
Its Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, stated that with the venue's average daily footfall of about 50,000 people, the festival is expected to attract at least 20 per cent of visitors over the two days.
"The strategic location, situated near a major university and surrounded by office buildings and family-friendly spaces, makes it an ideal venue for engaging students, professionals, and families alike,' Tiong told Bernama on Sunday (June 29).
He added that the vibrancy of the festival invites the public to experience the essence of Malaysia through its rich culinary offerings, captivating cultural performances, and exclusive tourism promotions, all in line with the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
Tiong, who is on a working visit to Bangkok from June 27 to July 3, officiated at the festival, aiming to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of VM2026.
He emphasised that the festival plays a significant role in the lead-up to next year's Visit Malaysia, aiming to boost visibility and strengthen Malaysia's image as a welcoming and diverse travel destination.
"This initiative directly contributes to our 2025 tourism targets of achieving 43 million international tourist arrivals and generating RM283.8 billion in tourism receipts for the country,' he said.
Tiong noted that the festival is part of Tourism Malaysia's ongoing efforts to promote VM2026, particularly by encouraging Thai tourists to explore Malaysia's unique attractions.
"Hosting the festival at such a high-traffic and accessible location allows us to showcase Malaysian culture and cuisine to a wide audience, encouraging more Thai and regional travellers to consider Malaysia for their next holiday destination,' he added.
According to Tourism Malaysia's records, Thailand contributed 2.26 million visitors to Malaysia in 2024, generating RM3.994 billion in tourism receipts. - Bernama

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Edmund Bon Tai Soon, urged ASEAN to move beyond fragmented national efforts and adopt a shared regional framework that holds both governments and businesses accountable to clear and consistent gender rights standards. 'Having a legal framework is very crucial. We are a diverse region, but we must develop a framework, especially now that Malaysia has led the adoption of the new ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which commits to uplifting and protecting the rights of women and children,' he said. Bon also emphasised that beyond policies and laws, genuine progress requires strong political will and commitment from ASEAN leaders.

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's pharmaceutical industry is emerging as a driver of high-value investment, skilled employment, and healthcare resilience, driven by regulatory and productivity reforms implemented in recent years, according to the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC). MPC said these efforts have also supported Malaysia's climb to 23rd place in the 2025 International Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Ranking, the country's highest position in over a decade. 'Under the MPC, the Pharmaceutical Productivity Nexus (PPN) has driven structural changes that translate directly into economic value by streamlining product registration processes, aligning technical requirements across agencies, and reducing regulatory bottlenecks,' it said in a statement today. According to the MPC, two new pharmaceutical facilities have progressed to the development stage, unlocking investments and creating skilled employment opportunities, while two additional facilities are moving forward more rapidly under the streamlined processes. MPC director general Datuk Zahid Ismail said the sector's transformation provides a blueprint for national economic renewal. 'Every bottleneck removed is an opportunity unlocked, whether it's faster factory approvals, increased export readiness, or local production of critical medicines,' he added. The president of the Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI) and PPN representative, Ch'ng Kien Peng, said the pharmaceutical sector's gains reflect what is possible when productivity reforms are targeted, data-driven, and collaborative. 'These wins go beyond industry metrics. They mean better access to affordable medicines, more quality jobs for Malaysians, and increased resilience in our healthcare supply chain,' he said. Revamped KLIA Aerotrain to resume service tomorrow, launch by PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: After nearly 28 months of suspension, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is set to relaunch the fully modernised KLIA Aerotrain service tomorrow (July 1), marking a significant milestone in the country's airport transformation agenda. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1), where the upgraded automated people mover system will resume full operations at 10am. A long-standing icon of KLIA since 1998, the Aerotrain service has undergone a RM456mil overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742mil Airport Regeneration Plan, aimed at future-proofing one of the region's busiest aviation hubs. Now equipped with state-of-the-art Alstom Innovia APM 300R trainsets, the system features three-car driverless units capable of transporting up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour. Hence the train journey between the main terminal and the satellite building is now reduced to under three minutes. Each train is fitted with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce service disruptions, boost operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort -- addressing past concerns over frequent breakdowns that plagued the ageing system. The new system underwent six months of rigorous testing and commissioning by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) between January and June 2025. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani was reported as saying that extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations. Originally slated for completion in March 2025, the project faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while keeping KLIA operational. KLIA T1 currently manages more than 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a pivotal role in maintaining smooth connectivity, especially for international transfer passengers. The satellite terminal houses many long-haul international carriers, making fast terminal transfers essential in reducing missed connections and ensuring seamless passenger journeys. With the Aerotrain now back online, the airport is better positioned to cater to rising passenger volumes, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia 2026 and KLIA's projected recovery to pre-pandemic traffic levels.- Bernama
