Gold drops Rs4,100 from April peak on Akshaya Tritiya, sales mixed amid high prices

Time of India30-04-2025

Nagpur: Gold prices dipped to Rs95,400 per 10 grams (tola) on Akshaya Tritiya on Wednesday — a fall of Rs4,100 from the April peak of Rs99,500. However, the yellow metal remains significantly costlier compared to last year, when it was priced at Rs80,600 on the same day. Silver held steady at Rs96,000 per kg.
Jewellers in Nagpur and across the country reported mixed sales trends on Wednesday. While value-wise business may have seen an uptick due to higher rates, the volume of gold sold — measured in weight — has likely declined.
"Sales are up in value terms, but we expect a 40% drop in volume compared to earlier years," said Pradeep Kothari of M/s Karan Kothari Jewellers. "Customers are buying, but less in quantity."
Nitin Khandelwal, former director of the Gems and Jewellery Council (GJC), said that sales on Akshaya Tritiya in 2024 had already declined compared to 2023 due to price hikes. "Crowds are visible in stores, but the final tally will be clearer the next day," he added.
Rajesh Rokde, president of GJC and a city-based jeweller, said customers have gradually accepted high prices, and overall sales were in line with expectations. "Despite the drop from the April peak, gold is still expensive. Yet, buyers are participating, possibly with adjusted budgets," he said.
In his capacity as the national chairman of the jewellers' guild, Rokde estimated that total sales across India could touch Rs20,000 crore on Wednesday. "According to GJC's estimates, monthly transactions involving up to 1,200 tonnes of gold take place — 800 tonnes through imports and another 400 tonnes received from customers selling old gold."
He further added that the annual average gold turnover is around 3.5 tonnes in terms of physical weight. "On Akshaya Tritiya, the volume typically rises 6 to 7 times, reaching around 20 tonnes in a single day. At current prices, that translates to ₹20,000 crore in value," he explained.
Though the day remained active in many parts of India, a clearer sales picture is expected once the World Gold Council (WGC) releases its data.

H&M owners quietly buying its shares

Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), the fast-fashion retailer that's been listed on the Swedish stock market since 1974, is steadily moving back towards private ownership. The founding family has stepped up purchases of H&M shares, spending more than $6.6 billion since 2016 to amass nearly two-thirds control and fuelling speculation it could take the Stockholm-based company back into private hands - despite denials from family members. The Perssons, one of Sweden's wealthiest families, has ramped up insider buying by reinvesting dividends, boosting its H&M stake to almost 64% from 35.5% over the past nine years through a holding company Ramsbury Invest, saying little about their intentions other than that they "believe" in H&M, founded in 1947 by Erling Persson. 444 services unavailable on ‘aaple sarkar' portal despite digital push

1 2 3 4 5 Pune: Even though state govt continues to promote digitisation and time-bound delivery of public services under the Maharashtra Right to Public Service Act, 2015, a significant chunk — over 400 notified facilities — are yet to come on 'aaple sarkar RTS portal', data shows. Of the 1,027 services notified under the Act across 29 departments, only 583 are currently available online. The remaining 444 services continue to operate offline, defeating the very purpose of a seamless, transparent, and paperless system promised to people, officials said. Among the departments that are yet to completely switch to digital mode are animal husbandry, medical education and drugs, education, Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, state excise, and transport. "The deadline to digitise all notified services is Aug 15. However, we have urged all departments to speed up the process and integrate the services with the portal as soon as possible. Otherwise the services delivery cannot be tracked," a senior govt official said. Another official said people can either submit their application sitting at home or use the 40000 seva kendras across the state. However, citizen groups claim that many kendras are either non-functional or offer limited support, further weakening the last-mile delivery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "My daughter wanted her domicile certificate and despite trying to upload documents from home, we faced technical glitches," Meera Mohan, a home maker, said. Kartika K, a medical student, had to approach a kendra or citizen facilitation centre to apply for income generation certificate. "While some services are online, there are many departments that have not uploaded the services." Recently, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis set Aug 15 as the deadline for full digitisation, warning that non-compliance would attract Rs1,000 in fine per day for each offline service. Amendment planned State govt is mulling an amendment to the RTS Act to introduce compensation for people affected by delays in services delivery, officials said. The proposed clause, based on the model practised in Haryana, would hold officials accountable and ensure applicats are reimbursed for missed deadlines. An automatic escalation of unresolved cases is also under review. Since the Act came into effect in 2015, state has processed 18.89 crore service requests, with 17.79 crore resolved, data shows. Initiatives like 'Sevadhoot', a doorstep delivery programme, have gained traction statewide, underscoring the public's growing demand for accessible, tech-enabled governance. This will be replicated across Maharashtra, officials said.

India's EV policy: Can it deliver?

To encourage global brands to invest under the Scheme, they will be allowed to import Completely Built-in Units (CBUs) of e-4W with a minimum Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value of $35,000 at reduced customs duty of 15% for five years from the application approval date. To avail this important benefit of the scheme, manufacturers would be required to make minimum investment of Rs4,150 crore. The maximum number of electric four-wheelers allowed to be imported at the reduced duty rate is capped at 8,000 units per year. The carryover of unutilised annual import limits would be permitted. The maximum benefits from this duty reduction are topped at Rs6,484 crore or the actual investment amount, whichever is lower. Manufacturers are also required to meet certain criteria including the need to achieve an annual turnover of at least Rs2,500 crore by the second year, Rs5,000 crore by the fourth year, and Rs7,500 crore by the fifth year. Additionally, they must reach local value-addition targets of 25% by the third year and 50% by the fifth year. They are also required to be of a certain size. The Global Group's Revenue (from automotive manufacturing) has to be at least Rs10,000 crore and if the applicant is an investment company, the revenue should not be less than Rs3,000 crore. The application widow under the scheme is likely to open soon, and will remain open for 120 days. However, the government can reopen the window as and when required till March 15, 2026. Union heavy industries minister H D Kumaraswamy has said that global players including Mercedes, Volkswagen-Skoda, Hyundai, and Kia have shown interest in applying under the EV policy.
