Hannah Gutierrez-Reed: Weapons supervisor convicted in fatal shooting on Alec Baldwin film set freed from jail

Sky News24-05-2025

A weapons supervisor who was jailed for involuntary manslaughter over the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie, Rust, has been freed.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was released on parole from the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants on Friday, after serving her 18-month sentence, NBC News, Sky's US partner said, quoting New Mexico Corrections Department spokesperson, Brittany Roembach.
Gutierrez-Reed was released to return home to Bullhead City, Arizona, where she will be on parole for a year for the manslaughter case.
She was in charge of weapons during the production of the Western film in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in October 2021, when a prop gun held by star and co-producer Alec Baldwin went off during a rehearsal.
Cinematographer Hutchins died following the incident, while director Joel Souza was injured.
Gutierrez-Reed was acquitted of charges of tampering with evidence in the investigation, but will be on probation over a separate conviction for unlawfully carrying a gun into a Santa Fe bar where firearms are banned weeks before Rust began filming.
Involuntary manslaughter means causing someone's death due to negligence, without intending to.
At her 10-day trial in New Mexico in March last year, prosecutors blamed Gutierrez-Reed for unwittingly bringing live ammunition onto the set of Rust and for failing to follow basic gun safety protocols.
The 18-month sentence she was given was the maximum available for the offence.
Baldwin, 67, was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the case was dramatically dismissed by the judge during his trial last July over mistakes made by police and prosecutors, including allegations of withholding ammunition evidence from the defence.
The actor had always denied the charge, maintaining he did not pull the gun's trigger and that others on the set were responsible for safety checks on the weapon.
Rust was finished in Montana and released earlier this month, minus the scene they were working on when Hutchins was shot, Souza, speaking at November's premiere in Poland, said.
Rust is billed as the story of a 13-year-old boy who, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents' deaths in 1880s Wyoming, goes on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after being sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

America's worst mother Lori Vallow is thrown out of court after attacking judge

'Doomsday mom' Lori Vallow Daybell was kicked out of the courtroom after arguing with the judge during her murder conspiracy trial. Vallow Daybell, 51, is facing charges in Arizona for the attempted murder of Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of her niece. In April, she was convicted of conspiring to kill her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, in 2019 and faces another possible life sentence. She is already serving three life sentences for killing her daughter Tylee, 16, and son JJ, seven, in 2019, as well as conspiring to kill her fifth husband, Chad Daybell 's, previous wife, Tammy Daybell. During the second day of Vallow Daybell's third trial, Judge Justin Beresky had her escorted out of the courtroom after a fiery exchange of words, reported AZ Family. The prosecution argued Vallow Daybell, who is representing herself in court, opened the door for them to mention her previous convictions during her opening statement by claiming she is 'loving and peaceful.' Tensions escalated when Vallow Daybell interrupted the judge and demanded a hearing over the character evidence. Beresky interrupted and said, 'Stop. We'll have a very short hearing. If you're going to introduce how you have good character and great character, we're going to have a short hearing on what evidence they can bring in to rebut which could including being convicted of four murders.' 'You don't get to yell at me either,' Vallow Daybell said. The judge replied, 'I'm not yelling, OK.' 'Yeah, you are. You're not in charge of me that way,' Vallow Daybell quipped. 'I'm very courteous to you.' Beresky shut it down and had her escorted away, saying, 'Okay, take her out. Take her out. Take her out.' 'No, you have been nothing near courteous to me during these proceedings,' Beresky told her and suggested she talk with her advisory counsel. Prosecutors claim that while Vallow Daybell's brother, Alex Cox, shot at Boudreaux in 2019, they believe the 'Doomsday mom' conspired to have him killed. Vallow Daybell denied any involvement and claimed in her opening statement that Boudreaux blamed her because he didn't like her. She will not be sentence for her the murder conspiracy of her ex-husband, Charles Vallow, until the Boudreaux murder conspiracy trial is complete. Prosecutors said Vallow Daybell had help from her brother, Cox, in the July 2019 shooting death of Vallow at her home in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler. They said she was motivated by an opportunity to cash in on Vallow's life insurance policy and a marriage to then-boyfriend, Chad Daybell, who wrote several religious novels about prophecies and the end of the world. Daybell was sentenced to death for the deaths of Vallow Daybell's children, 7-year-old Joshua 'JJ' Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, and his wife, Tammy. Authorities in Idaho said the case included bizarre claims by the couple that the children were zombies and that Vallow Daybell was a goddess tasked with ushering in an apocalypse. Vallow Daybell gave a rare jailhouse interview after her conviction in April, claiming she was shocked to have been found guilty. 'I mean, obviously I knew that was a possibility, yeah, so, it was a bit of a surprise actually,' Vallow Daybell said.

Migrant acquitted in first trial over US border military zones

June 5 (Reuters) - A federal jury in Texas on Thursday acquitted the first migrant tried for entering one of the new military zones on the U.S.-Mexico border, marking a legal challenge to the Trump administration plan to raise penalties for illegal crossings. The trial of the 21-year-old Peruvian woman was a test of whether the federal government could levy extra charges against migrants who cross the border unlawfully into areas in Texas and New Mexico designated as restricted military areas. Adely Vanessa De La Cruz-Alvarez faced two charges for entering a Texas military zone and a charge for illegal entry into the United States after her May 12 arrest near Tornillo, about 30 miles east of El Paso, according to court documents. An El Paso jury on Thursday found the migrant guilty of illegal entry to the United States but not guilty of unlawfully entering military property. The judge in the case on Wednesday acquitted De La Cruz-Alvarez of a trespassing charge, ruling federal prosecutors produced no evidence the migrant saw any signs warning her that she was entering a Department of Defense restricted area. "There was zero testimony that Ms. De La Cruz (1) ever saw any such signage, (2) knew that the area was designated as any kind of a military zone, (3) had any intention, willfully or otherwise, to enter upon a military zone," Federal Magistrate Judge Laura Enriquez wrote in her ruling. Federal prosecutors argued they did not need to prove De La Cruz knew she was trespassing on military land to charge her for the act, only that she knew she was illegally entering the United States. Alvarez's lawyer Veronica Teresa Lerma did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The El Paso trial comes after federal magistrate judges in New Mexico, opens new tab and Texas dismissed trespassing charges against dozens of migrants on grounds they did not know they were on military land due to inadequate signage. The National Defense Areas were set up along 240 miles of the border in New Mexico and Texas starting in April. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said migrants caught in them could face combined penalties of up to ten years' imprisonment.
