'Truly Cinematic' Moment Lost Dog is Found by Veteran Drone Team in Just 41 Minutes
A dog lost in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was located in just 41 minutes on the evening of February 21 after the USAR Drone Team, a veteran-focused non-profit, came to the rescue through their use of advanced thermal imagery.
The dog, Shade, had been missing for 27 hours and 'spent an entire, freezing night out on his own' after 'wiggling' free of his harness and running off, according to owner Gina Manfredi.
With time ticking on, Manfredi decided she needed help to search the area from the sky, and called on the Jersey Shore-based USAR Drone Team. The crew of specialist drone pilots help people search for missing pets, and are aiming to expand their services through GoFundMe donations to help cover the cost of searches.
USAR's drone crew joined the search for Shade after night had fallen over Cherry Hill, but by using specialized thermal imagery that allowed them to see Shade's body as a white glow amid all the dark, the team was able to spot the lost dog, and direct Manfredi's brother towards Shade's location, all in under 41 minutes - a new record for the squad.
Manfredi can be heard erupting with emotion as she realizes her beloved Shade was back in safe hands, crying 'thank you so much!' to the team of rescuers.
'When I spoke with Michael Parziale from USAR Drone Team Group, I immediately felt a sense of relief. His warm, caring voice gave me hope, and I knew right away that we were in good hands,' Manfredi said in a post on Facebook.

Seat 11A: Is it the safest seat on a plane? Experts say it depends
(NewsNation) — The crash of Air India Flight 171 has travelers worldwide wondering: Are there some seats on a plane that are safer than others, and if so, which seats are they? The crash, which took place shortly after takeoff Thursday from the Ahmedabad airport, killed 241 passengers and crew members. As investigators probe the crash and families mourn those killed, attention has turned to Ramesh Viswashkumar. Viswashkumar, 40, was the only person to survive the crash. The Latest: A single passenger survived the Air India crash, hospital says The British national was in seat 11A at the time of the crash, leading many to wonder if that particular seat is safer than others. The badly injured Viswashkumar struggled Thursday to describe what he experienced as people died in front of his eyes. NBC News reported that Viswashkumar was able to escape from the broken emergency exit door just moments before the fuel-loaded plane exploded in a fireball. 'Emergency door is broken. My seat is broken,' Viswashkumar told DD India in an interview. 'Then I see the space a little bit and I will try to come out.' 'Little bit of fire, after I'm out, then blast.' Air India's sole crash survivor narrates his escape So, is seat 11A the safest in a crash? It depends on multiple factors, according to experts. Seat 11A on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is typically located near the front of the Economy Class cabin. Depending on the airliner's configuration, it is a window seat in the first or second row of that cabin. According to The Times in London, seat 11A on Flight 171 was the first economy seat, adjacent to the bulkhead emergency exit. There were seven other emergency exits on the plane. What to know about the Air India plane crash that killed more than 240 people Aviation experts say that determining the safest seats on a plane is not a straightforward task. 'Each accident is different, and it is impossible to predict survivability based on seat location,' Mitchell Fox, a director at Flight Safety Foundation, told Reuters. Ron Bartsch, chairman of the Sydney-based AvLaw Aviation Consulting, told the news agency that seat 11A's location may have made it a safer choice on this particular flight, but that will not always be the case. Sitting next to an emergency exit also does not guarantee survival. Despite seven other emergency exits on Flight 171, there were no other survivors. Air India black box recovered after crash that killed 241 onboard and several others on the ground Emergency exits might not work following a crash, or they might be blocked by debris, experts say. Sitting in an aisle seat could offer a faster escape, but there is the threat of luggage falling into the aisles or hitting survivors as it tumbles from an overhead bin. A 2015 analysis by Time magazine found that passengers in the rear third of an aircraft have a better chance of surviving a lower-impact crash, according to The Times. The front of the plane typically takes the brunt of the impact. Seats near the wings may offer more protection, both because of their proximity to emergency exits and because of the structural reinforcements in that section. Those seats are closer to the fuel tanks, however. Sitting near an emergency exit also comes with added responsibility because passengers in exit row seats are asked to help fellow passengers evacuate the plane in a crisis. A look at previous plane crashes in India Viswashkumar, who was filmed walking away, bloody and bruised, from the crash, never had that chance. Reuters reported that he initially believed that he would perish with his fellow passengers. 'But when I opened my eyes, I realized I was alive, and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others (died),' he said. According to Reuters, it is vital for passengers to pay attention to the safety briefings that the cabin crew provides at the start of any flight. Compliance with the crew's instructions is credited with saving the lives of 379 passengers and crew aboard a Japan Airlines flight last year. Along with paying attention to the safety briefing, the Federal Aviation Administration advises that passengers keep their seat belts buckles whenever the seat belt light is lit up. Seat belts, designed to be worn low and tight on the hips, keep passengers safe during takeoff and landing and during instances of air turbulence. Children under 40 pounds should be restrained in an approved child safety seat. Passengers should also follow the airline's carry-on policies to help prevent injuries. With community support, iconic popcorn wagon returning to Madelia
With community support, iconic popcorn wagon returning to Madelia originally appeared on Bring Me The News. A beloved popcorn wagon that served downtown Madelia for more than 60 years is making a return. Spearheaded by Madelia resident Ryan Visher, owner of Hope and Faith Floral & Gifts, the popcorn wagon will be restored and begin operating again with the help of community donations. The wagon was originally operated by Ruth Allen, who sold popcorn in downtown Madelia for decades, according to the Mankato Free Press. Visher, who has launched a GoFundMe to help pay for the van's rehabilitation and transportation to Minnesota, has been documenting the wagon's journey from Wyoming. "We are restoring the nostalgic wagon and will be offering popcorn, candy, and other treats in the same wagon that was on our Main Street for over 60 years,' a GoFundMe reads. 'The last owner is selling it to us, but we have to bring it back from Wyoming and want to restore it to its original state.' The GoFundMe has raised around $4,700 of its $5,000 goal. Since it returned back to Minnesota, Visher has been receiving assistance from local businesses to restore the wagon to its former glory. Hope and Faith anticipates the wagon to make its debut at the city's Park Days, which runs from July 12 to July 14. Joy and grief for lone India crash survivor's family
The UK-based family of the lone survivor of the Air India crash were torn on Friday between joy at his miracle escape and grief at the loss of his brother. "We are happy Vishwash has been saved, but on the other hand we are just heartbroken about Ajay," his cousin told AFP outside the family home in central Leicester. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, is believed to be the only person to have survived the crash when Air India Flight 171 plummeted from the sky shortly after taking off from the northern Indian city of Ahmedabad. His brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, was on the same flight, but is believed to have perished in the disaster. There were 242 passengers and crew on the plane, including 53 British citizens. At least 24 people were killed on the ground, officials said, after the aeroplane landed on a canteen building where students were having lunch. Since Thursday's tragedy, the small Leicester street where Ramesh's parents and younger brother lived has been flooded with visitors. Ramesh lives not far away with his wife and son, his cousin Hiren Kantilal, 19, told AFP. Ajay also lived in the town, one of the oldest in England, and the two brothers ran a confectionary business together. "They are wonderful people, and heartful people. They are greatest men I have ever seen in my life, both of them," said Kantilal. The brothers were returning to the UK after spending a few weeks on holiday in India, and the family had been waiting to go and pick them up at Gatwick airport. - 'I am totally fine' - Shortly after the crash, they were shocked when Ramesh, who had reportedly been in seat 11A, called his father to say he was alive. Ajay was seated at the other end of the row. "Our plane has been crashed," Ramesh told his dad, according to his cousin. "He was bleeding all over him, in the face and everything, and he said: 'I am just waiting for my brother and I don't know how I get out of the plane'. "He said: 'do not worry about me, try to find about Ajay Kumar' and he said: 'I am totally fine'." Kantilal said his cousin had waited for about 10 to 15 minutes seeking his brother, and then was whisked away to hospital by the rescue services. Images which went viral on social media apparently showed Ramesh walking away from the wreckage of the 787-8 Boeing Dreamliner, and have been splashed across the front pages of British media along with a photo of him in his hospital bed. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Ramesh on Friday at the hospital where he is being treated for burns and other injuries, footage on his YouTube channel showed. "Everything happened in front of me, and even I couldn't believe how I managed to come out alive from that," Ramesh said from his hospital bed, speaking in Hindi to national broadcaster DD News. His parents had also been desperately trying to contact his brother Ajay on Thursday. "The call was going through, but no-one was answering the call," Kantilal said. At the family home, relatives were frantically scanning their phones to try to buy a flight to Ahmedabad later on Friday afternoon. Downing Street said that the foreign ministry had been in touch with Ramesh to offer him consular assistance. mhc/alm/jkb/bc
