'Ed Sheeran performed in my Ipswich pub - it was amazing'
A landlord said seeing Ed Sheeran perform a surprise gig in his pub was "surreal" and a moment he will "never forget".The Shape of You singer, who grew up in Framlingham, Suffolk, took the mic at the Thomas Wolsey, in Ipswich, earlier this month. Before his appearance, the watering hole was rebranded and renamed The Old Phone after the 34-year-old's latest single.Despite his superstar status, Damon Jeffery, who owns the pub, said Sheeran was one of the loveliest people he had ever met and his concert had helped boost business.
"He was very relaxed and thanked us so much for allowing him to use the pub," added Mr Jeffery."We had a really nice chat and he put me at ease because he is such a nice guy – one of the most down to earth, pleasant guys. He made everyone feel welcome."
Sheeran staged the pop-up gig in support of the release of his new single and forthcoming new album, Play, and ahead of announcing three huge shows at Ipswich Town's Portman Road stadium.Personal images of Sheeran were put in frames around the venue, as well as various pieces of memorabilia. He performed for more than an hour to a crowd of lucky fans and even some famous faces, including Town manager Kieran Mckenna.
'Absolutely blown away'
"I am on the bar and Ed Sheeran is a matter of three metres away from me," Mr Jeffery told the BBC."Everyone was having an amazing time, the best time of their life – they were being absolutely blown away and some fans were in tears."There was a huge excitement and a huge adrenaline, it was just absolutely amazing, outstanding, and surreal."
Joe Gunter, who is one of the pub's bar managers, helped provide Sheeran and his guests with pizza and drinks before he took to the stage. She, too, said he was a "lovely guy", but her first interaction with him did not quite go exactly as she envisaged."He was going in the wrong direction to use the bathroom, so I directed him to where the bathroom was and told him it was free… so that will be my story for life now," she said."He was just a guy and really nice - and also taller than I expected."
Sheeran is no stranger to performing pop-up shows, making several impromptu appearances locally and around the world. In October 2022, a film crew followed the musician as he bought a guitar and then performed on the steps of the town hall, on the Cornhill. In February, the pop star was stopped from busking in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru.Mr Jeffery said his appearances had a positive effect locally. "We've had a real uplift in trade, which is amazing, with all generations just coming to experience a little bit of Ed Sheeran," said Mr Jeffery."We've seen a great influx of people, including people from Manchester and Liverpool, and we've had messages from people in Australia and New Zealand."Every town is struggling, especially the hospitality industry, so for someone as huge as Ed Sheeran to campaign for his local county is absolutely amazing."He could have gone anywhere in the world but he chose the Thomas Wolsey in Ipswich - and we will never forget it."

Who are Sunderland's most skilful players ever?
Throughout Wednesday, we are revealing who Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini believes are the club's most skilful players fifth place, its 1960s and 70s legend Billy Hughes. Hughes was an integral part of the 1973 FA Cup-winning side and Gabbiadini told BBC Radio Newcastle the striker brought a different skillset to other forwards of that time:"People have always talked to me about Billy Hughes. He was involved in a very successful team, and he is just one of those players who fans really engaged with. He was a little bit different - not a big bustling centre forward, which was the norm in his era. "He was wave-like, almost like George Best. "He scored really interesting goals. When you see them, they are really clever and he really used his imagination. For me, that is what defines his skills."Listen on BBC Sounds - and come back later for the rest of the list!

TV Twix advert is BANNED for encouraging dangerous driving - because it shows long-haired driver crashing his caramel-coloured motor on top of another car
An advert for Twix bars showing a long-haired driving crashing his caramel-coloured motor has been banned for 'condon[ing] unsafe driving'. The bizarre ad, released at the end of March, shows sporting a 70s-esque fashion involved in a car chase. But when he takes a sharp turn, he winds up plummeting off the side of the road, overturning the vehicle several times. However when the clip pans back to the vehicle at the foot of the cliff, there are two identical versions of the car sandwiched upon one another - like a Twix. To further add to the intrigue, a Twix bar falls from the sunroof of both cars before they head off into the sunset, the 'two is more than one'. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the ad 'must not appear again' as is, asserting it 'condoned unsafe driving. And while the watchdog noted the stunt took place in a fanciful-type advert, it claimed parts of the video 'appeared likely to breach' the Highway Code. It also highlighted there was an 'emphasis on speed' as well as 'fast paced beat and music' during the chase, with 'visible skid marks left' on the road. Mars-Wrigley, who own Twix, contested their advert was a 'cinematic presentation' set out in an 'absurd, fantastical' world 'removed from reality'. Defending their cinematography further, Mars argued the cars featured were driving as 'lawful speeds' and any simulation would reflect 'legal and safe driving'. The confectionery firm, which also represents Celebrations, Maltesers, said its caramel biscuit bar is renowned for it playful humour, which was further exhibited in the 'fantastical' ad. Clearcast, a non-governmental organisation, which approves adverts defended the sweet giant, adding the video did not imply 'safe driving was boring' or encourage people to drive in an unsafe manner. ASA's final ruling on the matter instructed Mars not to 'condone or encourage irresponsible driving' that was unlikely to break the Highway Code via adverts. A Mars Wrigley UK spokesperson said: 'We always take pride in maintaining high standards across all our communications and every advert we produce is submitted for approval through the appropriate review channels. 'In our view, this particular advert adopts a fantastical tone that is neither realistic nor intended to be imitated. 'Nonetheless, we take our responsibility as an advertiser seriously and never intended to cause any offence or concern, so we are reviewing the ruling carefully in order to work collaboratively towards a resolution.'

Brooklyn Beckham tells heartbroken parents David and Victoria he wants 'no contact with them' in latest devastating turn of ongoing feud
has reportedly told his famous family that he wants 'no contact' with them in the latest devastating turn of their ongoing feud. The wannabe chef, 26, along with wife Nicola Peltz, 30, have been engulfed in the escalating rift, with parents David and Victoria believed to be concerned about the influence the billionaire heiress has over their eldest son. A source told Page Six: 'Brooklyn told his family he wants no contact and he's not responding to those that try to connect.' According to the publication, the eldest Beckham boy has had no communication with his family following father David's Knighthood being announced last week and only learned of the news in the media alongside the rest of the world. Denying he'd asked for no contact, a source close to Brooklyn told the publication: 'Everyone's focus should be David Beckham 's great honour'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. MailOnline have contacted Brooklyn and David's reps for comment. On Monday younger brother Cruz, 20, showed his support for his mum amid the bitter family feud as he debuted a dramatic makeover which channelled the designer's iconic 'Posh crop'. Gone were the budding musician's longer messy locks, instead sporting a much shorter sleeker do, reminiscent of his mum's style way back in 2008. Last month MailOnline revealed that tensions in the family have grown so bitter that the musician was going out of his way to avoid his estranged brother. He has taken to contacting the family's favourite hangouts ahead of any visits to confirm that he won't cross paths with his sibling. Cruz is said to have sent messages to the owners of their haunts specifically asking questions such as, 'Is Brooklyn there?', to make sure the coast was clear. And he even follows that up with a request to 'let him know' if his brother later turned up, sources say. Last month Brooklyn appeared to make his feelings clear in an Instagram video shared in May, in which he pledged his unwavering loyalty to Nicola - the daughter of Miami-based billionaire businessman and investor Nelson Peltz. Apparently he only learned of the news in the media alongside the rest of the world (Nicola pictured Tuesday) The influencer whisked his wife off for an early morning motorbike ride and captioned the video: 'My whole world x I will love you forever x I always choose you baby x you're the most amazing person i know xx me and you forever baby.' Those close to the Beckhams told The Sun that the message seemed 'very pointed'. The insider added: 'It shows how much this situation with his family has escalated. 'It's very sad for everyone involved, especially David and Victoria who love him very much. This isn't the Brooklyn his family knows and loves. 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn.' Hours after the post, Cruz waded in on the row for the first time by writing an Instagram post in support of his parents, showing he does not side with Brooklyn. He wrote: 'I love my family. I love you guys more than anything, mum and dad you gave us life and cared for us no matter what, I cannot tell you how blessed we are to have you in our lives.' 'This post was like a dagger to their hearts but they will always be there for Brooklyn.' David and Victoria have resigned to the fact that they have become estranged from their beloved son after he failed to attend any of the football ace's 50th birthday celebrations last month. Despite flying to London, Brooklyn and Nicola didn't attend the big family party at the Beckhams' Cotswolds home or an idyllic trip to France or a meal at Notting Hill restaurant, Core. Last month, there was further proof of the irreparable nature of the rift when Brooklyn and Nicola jetted to the capital from their home in Los Angeles for a joint photoshoot with Italian luxury fashion brand Moncler. It took place less than two miles away from the Beckham family home in Holland Park, west London. Brooklyn didn't even tell David and Victoria they were in the country - let alone meet with them. Harper - who turns 14 in July - was exceptionally close with Brooklyn and Nicola, who often shared pictures of her on Instagram gushing over the teen and calling her 'my younger sister'. It will no doubt be heartbreaking for the Beckhams' youngest child with speculation as to whether her eldest brother will attend her 14th birthday celebrations.
