Medals for International Island Games in Orkney unveiled
The medals for the first International Island Games to be held in Orkney will feature an image of the islands' famous standing stones. Jodie Brown, 23, from Kirkwall, designed the medals and won a competition to see them brought to life. The winning blueprint was picked by Orkney jeweller Sheila Fleet who described it as "iconic". Hundreds of athletes from island groups around the world are expected to descend on Orkney in July for the biennial sports event.
"Jodie has created a very iconic design with so much that symbolises Orkney's rich cultural heritage," Ms Fleet said."The hollow circle stands for Orkney and the presence of the iconic standing stones."As a medal it has great impact."
Kirsty Talbot, the director of Orkney 2025, added: "It is extremely fitting that the medals designed for the athletes celebrate Orkney's iconic landscape and will be a perfect tribute to the winning athletes who compete in our games."Presenter Lorraine Kelly will host the opening ceremony of the Games, which run from 12-18 July.Archery, athletics, badminton, bowls, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, sailing, squash, swimming and the triathlon will feature. It is only the second time the games has been hosted in Scotland.
Orkney is one of the smallest group of islands in terms of population to have ever hosted the Island Games, which started in 1985.The last Island Games were held in Guernsey in 2023.

LA28 officials expect Trump administration to honor promises for Games
The ban, scheduled to go into effect Monday, is likely to be challenged in court. "I actually want to thank the federal government for recognizing that it's the Games writ large," Wasserman said. "It's the constituents of people -- the IOC members here this week and, for the next three years, the cadence of people from federations and governing bodies and (National Olympic Committees) and broadcasters -- that you know so well as they've come to the city pre-Games and during the Games. It's very clear that the federal government understands that that's an environment that they will be accommodating and provide for. "And so we have great confidence that that will only continue," Wasserman added. "It has been the case to date, and it will certainly be the case going forward and through the Games." Los Angeles and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials signed a contract with the IOC in 2017 that promised, among other things, temporary entry to the United States "without limitation" for "representatives, employees or other persons acting on behalf of, or representing" the IOC, National Olympic Committees, international sport federations, rights-holding broadcasters, marketing partners, media and the Games' official timekeeper. "We at the IOC have every confidence in the fact that the local authorities and the federal authorities understand that bringing the Games to your country is a big responsibility. It is 206 countries that are preparing to come to the Games," Nicole Hoevertsz, an IOC vice president who chairs the LA28 coordination commission, said. Those 206 countries include some that would be banned by Trump's order. Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen are the countries banned while partial suspensions apply to Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. "The federal government has given us that guarantee ... to make sure that these participants will be able to enter the country," Hoevertsz added. "... We are very confident that this is going to be accomplished." While athletes and others affiliated with the Los Angeles Games might be exempt from the ban, it says nothing about fans who ordinarily travel for the Olympics and World Cup. In addition to the 2028 Olympics, the United States is co-hosting the men's World Cup next summer with Canada and Mexico. But Wasserman said he doesn't anticipate the travel ban affecting ticket sales, answering with a flat "No" when he was asked about the possibility.

Gender row Olympic champion Imane Khelif skips tournament days after World Boxing announce mandatory sex testing
IMANE KHELIF will SKIP the Eindhoven Box Cup just a week after World Boxing announced mandatory sex testing for all athletes. The Algerian, along with Taiwan's Lin Yu-Ting, was the focal point of an explosive gender row that dominated the 2024 Olympics in Paris last summer. 1 Olympic champion Imane Khelif will skip the Eindhoven Box Cup Credit: AFP Khelif fought at the Games 18 months after being banned from competing at the Women's World Championships for allegedly failing a gender eligibility test. The alleged test administered by the International Boxing Association is said to have determined that Khelif and Yu-Ting have male XY chromosomes. The pair, however, were permitted to compete by the IOC because of their female passport statuses, to the fury of many. Less than a year after the scandal, World Boxing announced all participants in competitions under their jurisdiction will have to undergo sex testing. And Khelif won't be in action at their first event since the announcement in Eindhoven having missed the deadline to register. Eindhoven Cup media director Dirk Renders said: "The decision of Imane's exclusion is not ours. We regret it. Mayor of Eindhoven Joren Dijsselbloem has blasted World Boxing's decision to implement mandatory sex testing. In a letter to the Dutch Boxing Federation and the International Boxing Federation, he said: "As far as we are concerned, all athletes are welcome in Eindhoven. "Excluding athletes based on controversial 'gender tests' certainly does not fit in with that. "We are expressing our disapproval of this decision today and are calling on the organization to admit Imane Khelif after all." THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.. Three-weight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko retires after more than 400 FIGHTS in lengthy video
BOXING great Vasiliy Lomachenko has announced his retirement - bringing the end to an iconic career. Lomachenko has the greatest amateur record of all time, winning 396 times with just one loss - which he avenged. 6 Vasiliy Lomachenko has announced his retirement from boxing Credit: Instagram / @lomachenkovasiliy 6 Lomachenko retires as a three-weight champion Credit: Getty As a professional, the masterful southpaw won titles at feather, super-feather and lightweight. And he dazzled fans with his incredible footwork, combination punching and speed. He beat George Kambosos last May in Australia but has not fought since - rejecting talks to later fight Gervonta Davis. It cast doubt over his future in the sport - and now Loma has confirmed his retirement in a lengthy Instagram video. READ MORE IN BOXING FOOD FOR THOUGHT Wardley lived off ice cream and noodles after brutal Frazer Clarke fight He thanked his family, including his dad and coach Anatoly, his manager Egis Klimas, long-time promoter Bob Arum and the fans. Loma turned pro in 2013 - a year after the London Games - and did so after winning double Olympic gold. He wanted to fight for world title on his DEBUT - but was unable to do so without a ranking. Loma beat Jose Luis Ramírez in four quick rounds before challenging Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS But Salido - a part-time Uber driver - upset Loma and used veteran tactics to edge out a points decision. That did not deter Loma, though, as he bounced back with victory over Gary Russell Jr in his next fight to become champ after just three bouts. 'Back to the grind in a few days' - Anthony Joshua shows off results of elbow surgery as boxing star closes in on return The southpaw sensation then went on an unbeaten run over 13 fights and five years - winning titles at 126lb, 130lb and 135lb. Loma fought at lightweight despite being vastly oversized by his opponents - something that would inevitably catch up with him. Teofimo Lopez stunned him in 2020 to win the unified titles and three years later, Devin Haney would controversially beat Loma on points. Loma returned 12 months later to stop Kambosos in 11 rounds - winning back the IBF belt - but he later vacated the strap. And despite being linked with big-money bouts against the likes of Davis and Shakur Stevenson - it marked the end of the road for one of the sport's greatest. Loma was a fighter inside and outside of the ring - signing up to defend his country after Russia's invasion in February 2022. He enlisted with the Territorial Defence Forces - but eventually returned to boxing to resume his career. Loma hangs up his gloves with 418 total fights - amateur and pro - 414 wins, just four losses and a host of gold medals and world title belts. 6 Lomachenko beat George Kambosos in his last fight Credit: EPA 6 He suffered a controversial loss to Devin Haney Credit: Getty 6 Lomachenko was beaten by Teofimo Lopez in 2020 Credit: Handout - Getty 6 Lomachenko was a double Olympic champion Credit: Getty Images - Getty
