Tesla shares down as Trump fires back at ally Musk

5 June 2025 20:47 (REUTERS)Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla has stepped up criticism of the President Donald Trump's massive tax legislation in recent days. Investors are starting to shares dropped more than 5% on Thursday on a day otherwise devoid of news for the electric vehicle maker, leading traders to speculate that Musk's increasingly pointed rhetoric suggests strain in the relationship that has benefited his sprawling empire of Trump said on Thursday that Musk was upset because the bill took the EV mandate away."Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore," the president said."He said the most beautiful things about me. And he hasn't said bad about me personally. That'll be next. But I'm very disappointed."Trump's comments extended a decline in Tesla world's richest man, a key figure in the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) cost-cutting initiative for several months, has blasted the bill, not long after he said he would spend less time in the White House and more time with his companies. On his social media platform X, Musk has called on Congress members to kill the legislation, calling it a "disgusting abomination.""It more than defeats all the cost savings achieved by the DOGE team at great personal cost and risk," Musk, the largest Republican donor in the 2024 election cycle, said on X on leadership of DOGE and his alignment with the Trump administration have put off some Tesla buyers. Sales of his EVs have slumped in Europe, China and key U.S. markets like California, even as overall electric vehicle purchases continue to has slowly started to separate himself from the White House in recent weeks, stung in part by the wave of protests against Tesla."Elon's politics continue to harm the stock. First he aligned himself with Trump which upset many potential Democratic buyers. Now he has turned on the Trump administration," said Tesla shareholder Dennis Dick, chief strategist at Stock Trader other businesses, SpaceX and Starlink, dominate their respective markets, but have also come under scrutiny due to Musk's relationship with two businesses often serve as the default choice for commercial launches and satellite internet deployment, and foreign governments have also increasingly looked to Starlink, with regulatory approvals smoothed by Musk's shares are down 12% since May 27, roughly coinciding with his decision to pull back from Washington stock has been on a roller-coaster ever since his endorsement of Trump in mid-July 2024 in his re-election bid, gaining 169% from that point through mid-December. That was followed by a 54% selloff through early April as a "Tesla Takedown" protest movement House of Representatives version of the budget bill proposes largely ending the popular $7,500 electric vehicle subsidy by the end of 2025. Tesla and other automakers have relied on incentives for years to drum up demand, but Trump promised during the transition to end the could face a $1.2 billion hit to its full-year profit, along with an additional $2 billion setback to regulatory credit sales due to separate Senate legislation targeting California's EV sales mandates, according to J.P. Morgan analysts."The budget bill contains bad stuff for Tesla with the end of the EV credits, and just generally his falling out with Trump has risks for Tesla and Elon's other companies," said Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital public attacks have upset potential Republican Tesla buyers as well, Dennis Dick added. One White House official on Wednesday called the Tesla CEO's moves "infuriating."The billionaire joined Senate Republican deficit hawks this week in arguing that the House bill does not go far enough in reducing spending. Overall, Tesla shares are down 22% this year, including Thursday's losses. But the company is still the most valuable automaker worldwide by a long shot - carrying a market value of $1 trillion, far surpassing Toyota Motor's market value of about $290 billion. Tesla trades at 140.21 times profit estimates, a steep premium to other Big Tech stocks like Nvidia.

Reliance, Airtel group challenges 'low' India satcom fee which can help Starlink

NEW DELHI - A group representing Indian telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has said their businesses will suffer if India prices satellite spectrum at "unjustifiably low" rates that benefit satellite internet services such as Elon Musk's Starlink. India's telecom regulator in May proposed satellite service providers pay 4% of their annual revenue to the government for offering services. Starlink had lobbied India not to auction spectrum but just assign licences in line with a global trend, saying it is a natural resource that should be shared by companies. The Cellular Operators Association of India in a May 29 letter to the telecoms ministry sought a review of those pricing proposals, saying traditional players pay higher upfront auction charges for telecoms spectrum which make their payments to the government for spectrum roughly 21% higher, when compared to what satellite players would pay. "Price per MHz should be equivalent or at least comparable for both, especially when used to reach the same consumers for identical services," said the letter, seen by Reuters. "Satellite services can offer competitive and affordable alternatives to terrestrial broadband," it added. Reliance, led by Asia's richest man Ambani, and Airtel didn't respond to Reuters' request for comment. Starlink was not immediately available for comment. A senior Indian government source told Reuters on Wednesday the telecoms ministry is still reviewing the pricing recommendations made by the regulator, adding such industry concerns have been raised in the past. Telecom players like Reliance Jio are concerned they will be offering similar wireless broadband services as satellite providers but paying much more, said an industry source with direct knowledge of the situation. Reliance and others have spent nearly $20 billion in recent years to get 5G spectrum via auctions to offer telecom, data and broadband services. Ambani's company unsuccessfully lobbied New Delhi for months to auction satellite spectrum, and not allot it administratively as Musk's Starlink wanted. Though Reliance and Airtel have signed distribution deals in March for Starlink equipment, they will continue to compete with Musk's offerings to customers once launched.

Speedcast unveils next-generation SIGMA platform

SIGMA’s intelligent edge system and cloud-native SaaS orchestration platform provide the foundation for supporting customers’ digital transformation requirements. Speedcast has announced the latest-generation release of its SIGMA intelligent edge network management solution. The recent enhancements include a new architecture, evolving the SIGMA platform to address the modern-day challenges of visibility, control, compliance, and security required to manage distributed edge environments. The new base operating system and cloud-native orchestration platform are tailored for virtualised deployments and updates and policy-driven configuration throughout the entire lifecycle, aimed at addressing a critical need to automate at scale and enable streamlined, seamless rollouts to tens of thousands of edge devices. As the leading, global, tier-one reseller of Starlink, along with being a Eutelsat OneWeb distribution partner, Speedcast sees growing demand to integrate LEO service offerings with its SIGMA platform, providing a fully managed and future-proof solution for remote connectivity. SIGMA supports a wide array of services, including Starlink, OneWeb, and other emerging constellations, alongside traditional connectivity options, and operationalises multi-vendor enterprise SD-WAN and a range of other industry applications through highly flexible and automated edge deployment and marketplace. Dee Schwalb, Chief Product Officer at Speedcast, said: 'SIGMA has long been a customer favorite and a hero product for Speedcast. Our unique position supporting customers’ remote operations has provided invaluable insights into their diverse needs and challenges, which we’ve directly translated into these latest platform enhancements. This release fully modernises and evolves SIGMA's architecture to extend customers’ cloud experience to the edge, while enabling central management and orchestration of distributed edge infrastructure and applications.' The latest SIGMA release enhances remote site visibility and control with smaller routing functions, expands hardware diversity while reducing costs, and drives greater automation for deployment and updates, which is essential for managing the growth of edge devices. SIGMA brings together secure network connectivity, advanced firewall protection and strong hardware-based security, such as measured boot to ensure systems start safely, Zero Trust role-based access controls to ensure only authorized users can make changes, data encryption, and even disabling unused physical ports on devices, helping to prevent tampering or unauthorised access. The enhanced SIGMA platform also offers a key building block to addressing the International Association of Classification Societies’ (IACS) latest Unified Requirements intended to ensure that new ships are constructed with cybersecurity considerations from the outset. The new IACS E26 and E27 requirements focus on the entirety of the vessel and the Computer Based Systems onboard in terms of how those systems should be protected. SIGMA’s SASE cloud-native technology provides added network security and ensures the new design, configuration, deployment and lifecycle of applications meets these more challenging new standards for fleet owners and operators. Schwalb continued: 'The new architecture provides the backbone for our SIGMA marketplace, offering managed containerized or virtual machine deployments of applications that customers can leverage for their digital operations. Starting with our crew experience and internet café applications, we’ll be expanding the marketplace offerings in areas such as computer vision and video streaming, enhanced cybersecurity capabilities, and customer-selected VMs. This is the beginning of an era where customers can effortlessly add, manage and deploy complex solution sets securely throughout application lifecycles.' Earlier this year, Speedcast announced a patent grant by the US Patent and Trademark Office for technologies that the company has developed to overlay on the SIGMA platform. Speedcast’s intellectual property software will enable the company to deliver an intelligent network solution through a combination of proprietary algorithms, machine learning and automated analysis that dramatically improves the connectivity experience for customers. Speedcast will debut the enhanced, next-generation SIGMA platform at upcoming industry trade show events. At Nor-Shipping 2025, held June 2-6 in Oslo, Norway, the team will host a celebration event at the Speedcast stand #B05-33 on Tuesday, June 3 at 3:00 p.m. Speedcast technical and commercial experts will be on site, providing demonstrations of the platform. Additionally, Speedcast, in partnership with leading software company ZEDEDA, will be discussing how the upgraded architecture brings the power of edge intelligence to maritime operations during a session on Future-Proofing Your Fleet as part of the Digital Ship Forum at Nor-Shipping. The session takes place Wednesday, June 4 at 12:15 p.m. in the Thon Hotel Arena.
