
Jetstar Asia closure ‘disappointing' but airline has offered strong support, staff say
SINGAPORE: The closure of low-cost airline Jetstar Asia has come as a shock to employees who did not expect such an "extreme" measure.
But staff interviewed by CNA late on Thursday (Jun 12) praised the company for the support extended thus far, from severance packages to help with finding new jobs.
More than 500 people will be laid off as a result of the airline ceasing operations on Jul 31.
Jetstar Asia staff said they were first informed through a company-wide email at about 7am on Wednesday, slightly ahead of the public announcement.
A pilot who has been with Jetstar Asia for under a year said "it was quite sudden' and "there was no real clue" that something like this would happen.
'We did hear that the company wasn't making much money per se, but at most we expected no increment or no bonuses, which we would've just sucked it up and lived with it,' said the pilot, who declined to be named.
A cabin crew member who has worked for the airline for about three years said the news was "sad and disappointing'.
'I had a flight soon after the news broke. I had a bit of mixed feelings, but as cabin crew, we have to stay professional,' he added.
He said his colleagues have become like family. "The management did call us up individually and asked us how we are coping and are we okay, because we still have to work,' he said.
The flight attendant, who also did not want to be identified, said a company townhall was held soon after the official announcement.
It was a physical meeting at Changi Airport Terminal 1, with the option to attend virtually.
During the session, management talked about the company's challenges from operating expenses to fuel prices.
The head of its parent company Qantas Group had said that the low-cost carrier was facing rising supplier costs, high fees at airports and rising competition in the region.
"THEY HANDLED IT QUITE WELL"
Staff will receive four weeks' salary for every year they have worked for Jetstar, along with a bonus for the current financial year.
There will also be a special thank-you payment and continued access to staff travel benefits for a period equivalent to their tenure.
'The severance package is attractive,' the pilot told CNA. 'In fact it is quite good, especially for the guys who have been in the company longer.'
Jetstar is also helping employees find jobs elsewhere in the aviation sector.
'For pilots, they have helped link us up with the HR (human resources) of other airlines to get us to go over, or have them come over, to give us a talk about their openings,' he added.
The air steward similarly said: 'They are providing us other avenues, and most of us are likely going to the other companies.
'They handled it quite well, they tried to give us other opportunities," he added. "Not just the other Jetstar arms, but they also gave us channels to other airlines.'
These include Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways, apart from Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Japan, according to staff members.
Labour chief Ng Chee Meng had earlier said that the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), together with the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU), was also working to help affected staff with job placement and career advisory support, particularly within the aviation and aerospace sectors.
The NTUC and its Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 from next week to offer the likes of career coaching, skills upgrading and employability assistance, he said.
"We are exploring opportunities for Singapore Airlines Group, a unionised company, to match affected Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles where possible," said the NTUC secretary-general.
"The NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with (the) Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well."
The pilot told CNA that while Jetstar Asia will begin 'tapering down' in July ahead of its closure at the end of the month, it is currently maintaining its flight frequency as much as possible.
'The management said they are not going to disrupt the flight(s) .... and want to keep the flights going,' he said.
'They won't want to suddenly cancel this month as a lot of people will be affected, given it's the holiday period.'

Tokyo's trade envoy Ryosei Akazawa had earlier told reporters in Washington that 'some progress' had been made but that 'we've not been able to find a point of agreement yet.' G7 SUMMIT AND MIDDLE EAST TENSIONS Ishiba said the upcoming G7 summit would be a chance to deepen dialogue on the bilateral relationship. PARIS: War, tariffs and the deadly Air India crash will cast a shadow over the Paris Air Show as the aerospace industry's biggest annual gathering opens on Monday (Jun 17). More than 2,400 companies from 48 countries are set to display aircraft and aerospace technology during the week-long event at Le Bourget airfield, just outside the French capital. The fierce commercial battle between Airbus and Boeing typically dominates headlines, as the world's two top civil aircraft manufacturers announce blockbuster orders. But this year's show 'is much more complex,' said Airbus chief executive Guillaume Faury, who also chairs the board of the Gifas association of French aerospace firms, which organises the biennial event. GROWING CHALLENGES Russia's war in Ukraine has entered its fourth year, and fears are mounting of a broader Middle East conflict after Israel struck targets in Iran on Friday, disrupting commercial aviation across the region. The recent crash of an Air India-operated Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, which killed at least 265 people, has also shaken the industry. The disaster marks the first fatal crash of a 787 and comes as Boeing continues efforts to recover from past safety and production issues. DEFENCE IN FOCUS While civil aviation struggles, the defence sector is gaining prominence. 'The geostrategic environment has led us to bolster this aspect which was in the background in previous years,' said Gifas head Frederic Parisot. Japan issues rare warnings on bond market in policy roadmap
TOKYO :Japan's government issued rare warnings on rising government bond yields and the changing structure of debt ownership in its economic policy roadmap as the central bank gradually trims its presence in the market. "We must continue efforts to further promote domestic ownership of government bonds to avoid spikes in long-term interest rates caused by supply-demand imbalances," the government said in this year's economic and fiscal policy guidelines approved on Friday. The explicit warning in the guidelines, which form the basis for budget planning, follows a recent bond market rout that briefly pushed yields on super-long Japanese government bonds (JGB) to record highs. The government debt market, particularly the longest-dated bonds, faces a triple whammy of the Bank of Japan's tapering of bond purchases, waning demand from life insurers previously driven by capital requirements and intensifying concerns over Japan's tattered finances. The BOJ, which owns 46 per cent of JGBs, has been slowing bond purchases as it exits a huge asset-buying scheme. The central bank is expected to make no big changes to the current bond taper plan at its policy meeting next week but consider slowing the pace of tapering from next fiscal year, signaling a preference to avoid big market disruptions, sources told Reuters. That raises the importance of domestic private-sector banks, previously the biggest JGB owners, though capital rules are likely to limit their exposure to rate risks. Foreign investors have boosted their presence in the market over the last decade, but their holding duration is typically less than those of life insurers, Koichi Sugisaki, macro strategist Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities, said. "A situation where these buy-and-sell investors are holding large interest rate risks is inherently unstable, if not outright dangerous," Sugisaki said. "It's like having 'magma' ready to erupt at any moment, should something trigger it." Banks owned 14.5 per cent of JGBs including treasury discount bills as of the end of last year, while insurance firms held 15.6 per cent. Foreign ownership stood at 11.9 per cent. Eager to boost purchases by stable domestic holders such as banks, the government is preparing to introduce new floating-rate bonds linked to short-term interest rates to mitigate risks from rising bond yields. It also plans to expand the scope of investors eligible to buy government bonds specifically designed for retail investors, allowing non-profit corporations and unlisted companies to buy such principal-guaranteed JGBs. Additionally, the government is considering buying back some super-long JGBs issued in the past at low interest rates to improve the supply-demand balance, on top of an expected plan to trim issuance of super-long bonds. Growing calls from lawmakers for more stimulus and tax breaks are adding to the bond market woes. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has so far resisted proposals from some opposition parties for tax breaks aimed at helping households cope with persistent inflation. He instead instructed his Liberal Democratic Party on Friday to pledge cash handouts in its campaign for an upper house election in July, which would create less fiscal strain. The plan would not tap fresh deficit-financing bonds, he added. In the annual policy guidelines, the government effectively pushed back the self-imposed deadline for delivering a primary budget surplus from the previous target of fiscal 2025 to "as early as possible during fiscal years 2025 to 2026."
