EAIC Goes To The Ground To Gather Inputs On Conservation, Management Of HSK
TEMERLOH, May 28 (Bernama) —The Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) took a proactive step by conducting a visit to the District Forest Office here to gather information on the conservation and management of Permanent Forest Reserves (HSK) by the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department (JPSM).
EAIC secretary and chief executive officer Asliza Ali said the visit, also aimed at strengthening enforcement efforts and governance in the country's forestry sector, was an initiative of the Focus Group (FG) led by the commission.
She said it also followed a report on the findings of the Bertelsman Stiftung Transformation Index (BTI) 2024, which highlighted the issue of deforestation, weak environmental enforcement and the imbalance between economic development and environmental sustainability.
"Among the issues identified by BTI are weaknesses in the enforcement of forestry laws and the issue of illegal logging, logging license procedures and forestry management, which have resulted in soil erosion as well as flash floods.
"Therefore, from this visit, we can gather inputs from JPSM regarding the conservation and maintenance of HSK after forest product harvesting licenses have expired. We were also briefed on the use of satellite technology in detecting changes in the country's forests, as well as its function in proactively addressing forest issues," she said.
She said this at a press conference at the District Forestry Office here before entering the rehabilitated forest area for a visit.
According to her, a total of 32 cases of illegal logging were recorded in Peninsular Malaysia involving an area of 100 hectares, with 368 arrests made last year.
Meanwhile, Asliza said the visit also provided an opportunity for the EAIC Corruption Perception Index (CPI) Special Task Force to observe the HSK areas that had been maintained and replanted.
'In addition, we can also understand the current challenges facing the relevant agencies, especially in terms of enforcement, and assess the effectiveness of existing implementation as well as the level of support required by the JPSM in resolving the issue of illegal logging.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized assets linked to the misuse of sukuk funds of the construction of a highway in Klang Valley believed to be owned by a highway concessionaire with a Tan Sri title totalling RM143mil during an operation conducted last week. Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seizures include 14 individual accounts totalling RM4.5mil, eight company accounts totalling RM33mil, luxury condominium and land worth RM24.5mil, nine cars worth RM7.65mil, and 13 cars that have yet to be handed over to the investigation team. Other items seized include luxury watches worth RM25mil, handbags worth RM3mil, jewellery and diamonds (RM6mil), four horses (RM400,000), alcoholic beverages (RM3mil), foreign assets worth more than RM15mil and around RM20mil in gambling activities. "Preliminary investigations revealed there was misconduct between 2016 and 2020 involving approved sukuk funds of about RM1.35bil, involving false claims of about RM360mil and RM416mil and RM50mil in other bank facility loans. "The RM1.67bil highway project also failed to be completed according to schedule and investigations are focused on bribes worth RM12bil paid to certain parties as inducement in helping the cash flow out and back to the suspect,' he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 3), adding that the proceeds were also believed to have been used in money laundering activities. He explained that to embezzle the funds, the parties involved were believed to have used professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers and shell companies. "Until now, the MACC has yet to take the Tan Sri's statement as he is in a private hospital ward and today the investigating officer will get confirmation from the doctor on the status of the Tan Sri's health before recording his statement. "Meanwhile, the number of witness statements stands at 45, and those witnesses who have given their statements have been asked to provide further statements,' he said, adding that the investigating team is also tracking down luxury vehicles and properties belonging to the Tan Sri abroad, including in London and Switzerland. The investigation is focused on the true amount of luxury liquor kept by the Tan Sri and the possibility that funds have been transferred to other accounts, he said. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the investigation report will also be aligned with the results of the criminal investigation before being made public. 'We cannot release our criminal investigation now because we need to combine it with the technical investigation as there are still areas that need to be identified from the criminal investigation,' he said when met after an e-Bike Handover Ceremony at the Selangor Police Contingent headquarters here yesterday. He said the technical investigation under the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) also covers the integrity of the pipes, ground movement, and determines whether any activities in the area exert pressure on the gas pipeline. On May 27, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the police as well as the DOSH investigation reports regarding the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights are expected to be released by the end of June. Hussein said the police investigation also covering aspects of negligence or sabotage, had been completed, and they are waiting for the DOSH to complete their investigation. Close shave for 16 people involved in six-vehicle crash in Bidor
IPOH: Sixteen people, including four children, cheated death in a six-vehicle crash at Km341.5 of the southbound lane of the North-South Expressway (NSE) near Bidor tonight. Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said a team from Bidor Fire and Rescue Station rushed to the location 15 kilometres away after the department received a distress call at 7.26 pm. "The crash involved five cars and a five-ton lorry carrying fish, and there were no victims stuck or with serious injuries, only dizziness and trauma. "The accident is believed to have happened when the lorry could not brake in time and hit the Proton Exora, which then hit the other cars," he said in a statement tonight. Eight men, including an Arab man driving the Proton Exora, along with four women and four children were involved in the crash, he said. The four victims who suffered trauma and dizziness were taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment and operations ended at 8.20 pm. The official PlusTrafik X account meanwhile announced that the vehicles involved in the accident have been moved and both the right and left lanes that were temporarily closed have been reopened to traffic, but traffic was still slow moving. – BERNAMA
