Al-Ittihad Seal 10th Saudi Pro League Title

Asharq Al-Awsat16-05-2025

Al-Ittihad, captained by Karim Benzema, clinched the Saudi Pro League title with two matches to spare as they came from a goal down to beat Al-Raed 3-1 on Thursday.
The win at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Buraydah moved Al-Ittihad to 77 points from 32 matches, nine points ahead of second-placed Al-Hilal.
A victory was all Al-Ittihad, coached by Laurent Blanc, needed to earn their 10th league title, and the first since 2023, but the already-relegated Al-Raed drew first blood as Omar Gonzalez gave the bottom team the lead from close range after nine minutes.
Al-Ittihad, however, fought back with Steven Bergwijn equalizing 12 minutes later. A Danilo Pereira header gave them the lead shortly before halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Abdulrahman Al-Oboud put the game out of Al-Raed's reach.
The Jeddah-based club still have a chance to win another trophy this season as they take on Al-Qadsiah in the King's Cup final on May 30.

Is this the UAE's most climate-conscious sporting event?

DUBAI: The Desert Vipers have released a sustainability match report outlining the environmental impact of their headline sustainability fixture, saying it is possibly the lowest-emission professional sporting event ever held in the UAE. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Timed to mark World Environment Day, the report details how the Vipers, a founding team in the DP World International League T20, or ILT20, say they reduced the carbon footprint of a professional cricket match to just 30.86 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, translating per fan to a low 8.6 kg of CO2 equivalent, a rarity in global sport. 'While mega-events like the Paris 2024 Olympics (emitted 1.59 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent) and Euro 2024 (generated 490,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent) understandably carry large footprints due to international travel and scale, the Vipers' match sets a benchmark in per capita emissions. At 8.6 kg CO2 equivalent per attendee, this may be among the most climate-conscious fan experiences in professional sport,' said Ben Hardy-Jones, head of sustainability and lead author of the report. Hosted during season 3 of ILT20, the Vipers match featured: 100 percent recycled team and fan kits, made locally; hospitality menus free from red meat, with reduced dairy; biofuel-powered pitch machinery; fan travel emissions limited to under 11 percent of total footprint; water-awareness labelling in hospitality menus; a digital reach of 15.4 million and more than 265,000 engagements, amplifying the sustainability message, with virtually zero additional carbon impact. 'As one of ILT20's founding franchises, we wanted to show how elite sport can lead on climate action without compromising experience,' said Phil Oliver, Desert Vipers CEO and recent Middle East CEO of the Year at the SPIA Awards. 'This wasn't just about lowering emissions, it was about setting a practical example others can follow.' Though the match was a finalist at the Gulf Sustainability Awards 2024 in the 'most sustainable event' category, the data and design of the match are now serving as a template for the wider sports sector, as the Vipers call on teams, leagues and venues to join them in transforming environmental standards. 'This isn't a one-off stunt. It's a model we're evolving every season,' Hardy-Jones said. 'Our report is open-source because we want change across the board, from stadium design to catering decisions. Sport has that power.' With ILT20 season 4 launching on Dec. 2, the Desert Vipers say that they are planning deeper sustainability initiatives and calling on the global cricket community to help make sport a force for environmental good.

Man United captain Bruno Fernandes rejects $135m Al-Hilal transfer deal, UK media reports

BEIRUT: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes reportedly turned down a lucrative offer to sign for Saudi Pro League powerhouses Al-Hilal, for 'family and personal' reasons. Though there had been no official word from Al-Hilal about any approach to the player, several British media outlets reported on Tuesday that the 30-year-old rejected a massive deal said to be worth £80 million-£100 million ($108 million-$135 million). BBC Sport said the Portuguese midfielder spent the past few days 'seriously' considering an offer that would have more than doubled what he earns at Old Trafford, where he is already one of the top earners. Having discussed the deal with his family, however, Fernandes told the Saudi club he would not be joining them. Portugal were preparing on Tuesday for their Nation League semifinal against Germany on Wednesday, and with Fernandes expected to participate in the prematch press conference in Munich, it was thought the question of Al-Hilal's interest in him might be raised. Man United were said to be thrilled and relieved by his decision to stay with the club. Head coach Ruben Amorim had said last week that he believed his captain would remain at Old Trafford for the forseeable future. According to the British media reports, there was no direct communication between the two clubs, so United were never presented with any official offer from Al-Hilal that they could turn down. However, the stories suggested the Saudi side were willing to offer Fernandes up to £100 million to sign in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, while will take place in the US between June 14 and July 13. The Mirror newspaper quoted former United star Rio Ferdinand as saying he was delighted that Fernandes decided to remain in England. 'I've got to be honest (it's) the biggest news for me today,' Ferdinand reportedly said on his podcast. Sky Sports said that Al-Hilal offered Fernandes £100 million to join and were willing to almost treble his £250,000-a-week wages, and his decision to turn them down was thought to be both a football and personal one. It was also reported that the player's agent, Miguel Pinho, had visited Riyadh for talks with senior Al-Hilal executives but this could not be independently confirmed. said Fernandes rejected an 'eye-watering' £700,000-a-week move after discussing it with his family and coach. Former United right-back Gary Neville told Sky Sports the transfer would not have been a bad deal, financially, for the Old Trafford club but added: 'He's so important. The fact that he wants to stay, the fact that he wants to go through this and come out the other side — because it would have been easy for him at the end of this season to say, 'Look, I'm done here' — will endear him towards Manchester United fans even more.' Al-Hilal often shares important news through the club's account on social media platform X but there had been no mention of any potential offer to Fernandes.
