
Scientists confirm that people really do get drunker in the summer than winter
It's the time of year characterised by longer days, warmer weather and plenty of beer gardens.
And there's nothing quite like enjoying a few refreshing drinks in the summer sun.
But they can – inevitably – come with questionable decisions and raging hangovers.
Now, experts have confirmed people really do get drunker in the summer than winter.
It could go some way to explaining why typical summer drinks – such as Aperol Spritzes and prosecco – hit you harder than those more commonly enjoyed in winter, such as red wine and hot toddies.
Nagoya University researchers in Japan set out to find whether alcohol tolerance and carbohydrate metabolism change with the seasons.
To test for changes in alcohol tolerance, the team reared mice under winter and summer conditions.
They found that mice reared under winter conditions recovered from alcohol intoxication more quickly.
'This result suggests that the body is more likely to become intoxicated in the summer,' Professor Takashi Yoshimura said.
'This was an interesting discovery as this may explain why the number of patients hospitalized for acute alcohol intoxication is higher in the summer in most countries.'
They also investigated more than 54,000 genes in 80 tissues in monkeys across one year.
The team specifically looked at rhesus monkeys – a primate closely related to humans.
They discovered an unexpected difference in how the male and female bodies dealt with carbohydrate metabolism throughout the year.
Although the monkeys were fed the same diet across the 12 months, the activity of genes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates peaked during winter and spring in the duodenum – the first part of the small intestine – of the female monkeys.
Increased carbohydrate metabolism in the duodenum is important for the body to extract the maximum amount of energy from scarce food in the winter months, which may explain why people often gain weight during this period, the team said.
The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, add further insight into how animals, including humans, have evolved a biological clock that is calibrated to the seasons.
Physiology and behaviour, including hormone secretion, metabolism, sleep, immune function, and reproduction, change depending on the time of year.
A recent study found that wild chimpanzees love getting drunk with their friends – in a similar way to humans do.
Scientists from the University of Exeter filmed wild chimpanzees eating and sharing fruit containing alcohol for the first time.
According to the experts, this suggests that alcohol may have benefits for social bonding in chimps - just like humans.
'For humans, we know that drinking alcohol leads to a release of dopamine and endorphins, and resulting feelings of happiness and relaxation,' explained Anna Bowland, an author of the study.
'We also know that sharing alcohol – including through traditions such as feasting – helps to form and strengthen social bonds.
'So – now we know that wild chimpanzees are eating and sharing ethanolic fruits – the question is: could they be getting similar benefits?'
WHAT TO EAT TO BEAT A HANGOVER
Forget the traditional morning-after fry-up: to survive alcohol's effects, you need to support your liver and digestive system long-term, experts say.

Research has shown that the herb milk thistle (200–300mg daily) can be used to support liver health. Look for a blend at a health food shop, which might include other herbs such as dandelion and artichoke.
Other stomach-soothing and supportive supplements include turmeric as an anti-inflammatory, or the antioxidant glutathione, which helps to feed and heal gut cells.

Experts could have found a way to be one step closer to curing HIV for good. Researchers in Australia has developed a new treatment that forces hidden fragments of the virus - normally concealed within human cells - to emerge and expose themselves to the immune system. The breakthrough could enable the body, aided by antiviral drugs, to detect and destroy any lingering viral reservoirs. HIV has remained incurable because the virus can integrate itself into a cell's DNA, laying dormant and undetectable to both medication and immune defenses. Scientists said they've created a nanoparticle capable of delivering genetic instructions to infected cells, prompting them to produce a signal that reveals the virus's presence. Dr Paula Cevaal of the Doherty Institute and co-author of the study told The Guardian that the feat was 'previously thought impossible'. Cevaal said: 'In the field of biomedicine, many things eventually don't make it into the clinic, that is the unfortunate truth; I don't want to paint a prettier picture than what is the reality. 'But in terms of specifically the field of HIV cure, we have never seen anything close to as good as what we are seeing, in terms of how well we are able to reveal this virus. 'So, from that point of view, we're very hopeful that we are also able to see this type of response in an animal, and that we could eventually do this in humans.' The discovery was first revealed in the journal Nature Communications, where researchers said they were initially so astonished that they had to rerun the tests. Further research would be needed to determine whether revealing the virus would be enough to trigger an immune response, with tests only being carried out in the lab. It could still take years before clinical trials for the drug began, when it would have to go through rigorous testing before reaching consumers. However, the advance represents another step forward for the 1.2 million Americans currently living with an HIV infection - for which they took drugs daily. An estimated 31,800 people were believed to be infected every year, although that's a 12 per cent decline on five years ago. Globally, nearly 40 million people have the virus. The new nanoparticle's based on mRNA technology, the same as was used in covid vaccines made by Pfizer and other vaccine manufacturers. In their paper, the scientists revealed that they could deliver mRNA instructions to cells using the nanoparticle. The mRNA then instruct cells to generate substances that reveal the presence of HIV, but only if the virus was present. The study done in the laboratory was carried out in cells donated by HIV patients.

A team of researchers from Washington State University fear the newly-discovered HKU5-CoV-2 coronavirus found in China could mutate enough to cause a pandemic Scientists have warned that a newly-discovered coronavirus could lead to another pandemic. Researchers from Washington State University believe the HKU5-CoV-2 virus, found in China, is only one "small" step away from mutating. This in turn could allow it to infect humans and cause a widespread outbreak. Experts are on guard due to the pathogen's close relation to MERS, a life-threatening virus that kills around a third of people infected. Adding to the fear is that HKU5 was first recorded in bats by scientists from the Chinese lab where some say Covid originally came from in 2019, resulting in millions of deaths. The latest study was published in Nature Communications and looked at a lesser-known group of coronaviruses known as merbecoviruses, which includes HKU5 and MERS-CoV. In it, a team from the US looked at how the new pathogen interacts with human cells. Professor Michael Letko, a virologist at Washington State who co-led the study, said: "HKU5 viruses in particular really hadn't been looked at much, but our study shows how these viruses infect cells. What we also found is HKU5 viruses may be only a small step away from being able to spill over into humans." It was found that a small change in the virus' spike protein could mean that it attaches to human ACE2 cells, which are located in people's throats, mouths and noses. At the moment, the pathogen is only spreading in bats. However, scientists are concerned that unregulated wildlife trade in China increases the possibility of it eventually being transmitted to other species. 'Pseudoviruses' were created in the lab that include the HKU5 spike protein but are ultimately harmless and cannot replicate. These were then introduced to different types of cells, with some carrying bat ACE2 and others carrying human ACE2. In the experiments, the virus glowed green when it had entered and replicated inside a cell. The bat cells lit up brightly, meaning that HKU5 can easily infect them. However, human cells showed hardly any response unless the virus had certain mutations. The fear now is that if HKU5 jumps to an intermediate animal, for example a mink or civet, it could mutate enough before eventually reaching humans. One theory over the origins of the pandemic is that it was caused by a leak from a lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This gained traction after the Director of the FBI Christopher Wray said the bureau believes Covid-19 "most likely" originated in a "Chinese government-controlled lab". However, last year scientists who were part of a major international study rejected this popular belief. They instead claimed that it broke out from a wet market in Wuhan, China. Genetic samples of animals that were sold at the market stalls in 2019 found traces of the Covid virus in some species. Author of the study, Kristian Andersen from Scripps Research, said in the document: "This adds another layer to the accumulating evidence that all points to the same scenario: that infected animals were introduced into the market in mid to late November 2019, which sparked the pandemic."

People who acquire HIV through heterosexual sex made up 22 percent of new diagnoses, or 8,495 cases, while those who were diagnosed after injecting drugs made up seven percent of new diagnoses, or 2,650 cases.
