Elusive LSD Fungus Finally Discovered on Flower

An elusive fungus capable of generating quantities of a compound used to synthesize the hallucinogen LSD has finally been discovered on the morning glory vine after decades of searching.
Almost a century ago, the Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman hypothesized the whimsical plant might harbor a species that belongs to a family of ergot-generating fungi.
As the man who discovered and was first to synthesize LSD ( lysergic acid diethylamide) from the ergot alkaloid, Hoffman had been keen to expand our understanding of the biology and chemistry of organisms that produced it.
While biochemical data hinted that a commonly cultivated morning glory from Mexico called Ipomoea tricolor may host just such a fungus, the symbiotic species itself has never been detected.
That is, until Corinne Hazel, an environmental microbiologist from West Virginia University, noticed a telltale layer of fuzz on the outer layer of her Ipomoea tricolor seeds.
She was investigating the way the plants transmit the evasive fungus's ergot alkaloids through their root systems.
This psychedelic byproduct of fungal symbiosis has already been detected in a quarter of the 200 morning glory species sampled from herbarium collections. Biologists had all the evidence they needed to know the fungus was there in this particular plant – except for the fungus itself.
"People have been looking for this fungus for years, and one day, I look in the right place, and there it is," Hazel says.
"We had a ton of plants lying around and they had these tiny little seed coats. We noticed a little bit of fuzz in the seed coat. That was our fungus."
After microscope and genetic analysis, Hazel and her collaborator, botanist Daniel Panaccione, concluded the fungus was new to science, and have named it Periglandula clandestina.
With biochemical analysis of the fungus suggesting it's capable of producing high amounts of the alkaloid, genetic studies might yet reveal insights into its evolution and even ways to steal its secrets for the production of pharmaceuticals.
"Morning glories contain high concentrations of similar lysergic acid derivatives that give them their psychedelic activities," Panaccione says.
"Many things are toxic. But if you administer them in the right dosage or modify them, they can be useful pharmaceuticals. By studying them, we may be able to figure out ways to bypass the side effects. These are big issues for medicine and agriculture."

Toronto and Montreal's air quality is on par with some of the worst in the world due to drifting wildfire smoke. While fires continue to burn in Western Canada, wind has carried smoke from the fires to Ontario, Quebec and areas in the U.S. like Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin. The impact of wildfire smoke is so severe, Environment Canada issued air quality statements for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Montréal Island Area. As of 12:25 p.m. EST., IQAir, a Swiss technology company, ranked Montreal as the city with the worst air quality in the world. Toronto came in third place, behind Santiago. Environment Canada is encouraging people, especially the elderly, pregnant people, children and people with chronic health conditions, to avoid spending time outdoors whenever possible. As of June 6, the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre reported 212 active fires in Canada, with 91 considered out of control. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan due to poor visibility and air quality due to smoke. Manitoba's state of emergency required residents of several communities to evacuate due to air quality and lack of power. Environment Canada has issued a weather alert for parts of Ontario due to poor air quality that may cause people to experience symptoms like cough, headaches as well as nose and throat irritation. The Weather Channel in the U.S. reported wildfire smoke from Canada is visible as far as the Gulf Coast. Winds have caused smoke to impact air quality in states like Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan as well as North and South Dakota. As the wildfire season kicks off, ways to protect ourselves from smoke are top-of-mind for many. Yahoo Canada previously spoke to a top respirologist in Toronto, who weighed in on the impact of smoke on our lungs, and what to do to stay safe. Read on for everything you need to know. Dr. John Granton, a respirologist at the Toronto General Hospital (University Health Network), told Yahoo Canada wildfires cause air pollution that can have a far-reaching effect on human health. Small air pollutant particles in the smoke, called the PM2.5 particles, are "where a lot of the toxic stuff lives," Granton explained. "That's not filtered by your upper airway, that gets access to your lower airway and into your bloodstream even — and that's where the danger lies. "That can cause asthma attacks, can cause heart attacks, can contribute to hospitalizations and has long-term health outcomes." Even just the smell could cause problems to some, he said. "Being in smog all day long, the smell bothers people; it can cause irritation of the upper airway, some of the larger particles can cause irritation, and cause symptoms. People [who] have chest symptoms or asthma, it can make them feel worse." Granton said smoke isn't easy to escape, but there are some things people can do try and stay safe. According to Granton, "there's not a lot of data to support the health benefits of masking" when it comes to safety from wildfire smoke. But, he said there is research looking into the effectiveness of filters. "Cloth masks or scarves and things are not effective at all," the doctor claimed. But, surgical masks and N95 filter masks "tend to filter those smaller particles," he added, "apparently some of those masks are effective." Granton said "they're not going to filter the gases," though, and there are studies that question whether masks that aren't properly fitted would actually help in the real world. "Whether or not that has a direct health benefit is speculative right now," Granton explained. However, he said it "may be reasonable" for those who have underlying health conditions and those who have to be in the hotspots of the pollution to wear one. "If you have to be outdoors and doing things, then wearing that sort of mask to protect you would be sensible." Though filtration masks could aid in protecting your lungs from smoke, the number one recommendation from experts is to stay indoors. According to Health Canada, the following measures should also be taken: Reduce sources of indoor air pollution (smoking, vacuuming, burning candles, wood stoves) Prevent infiltration of outside air (seal windows, instal a high-quality air filter, set HVAC system to recirculation mode, limit use of exhaust fans when not cooking) Have a functioning CO alarm Use a portable air purifier and air conditioning Granton echoed this advice. "Most people recommend staying indoors as much as possible and not exercising or doing things outside," he reiterated. As wildfires continue to rage throughout Western Canada, thousands of residents of Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan have been evacuated, and millions in the surrounding areas face hazardous air quality conditions. Manitoba, the epicentre of the wildfires, remains under a province-wide state of emergency as extreme fire conditions force thousands to flee. Premier Wab Kinew has called it Manitoba's "largest evacuation" in living memory. More than 17,000 Manitobans have been evacuated, along with over 4,000 people in Alberta and between 10,000 and 15,000 residents in Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe declared a province-wide state of emergency on May 29, one day after his Manitoba counterpart, Kinew, did the same. Smoke from the Canadian wildfires has triggered air quality warnings in several provinces and surrounding U.S. states. As of Friday, June 6, much of southern Ontario and southern Quebec, including Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal, have been placed under special air quality alerts. As of 12:43 p.m. EST on Friday., IQAir, a Swiss technology company, ranked Toronto as the city with the second-worst air quality in the world and Montréal as the third-worst. On days with poor air quality, people are more likely to experience shortness of breath, difficulty breathing and coughing or wheezing — especially if they have a chronic respiratory disease like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The small particles in wildfire smoke can get into your eyes and bloodstream, and if you have a heart or lung problem, you may experience problems earlier and at lower smoke levels. According to Health Canada, using a portable air purifier that can filter fine particles is one way to protect your indoor environment from smoke pollution. Air purifiers, also known as air cleaners, can improve indoor air quality by removing small contaminants that can harm your health. According to the health authority, you should prioritize the following when choosing an air purifier: Look for a device certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). Choose an air purifier sized appropriately for the room you want to put it in. Consider the clean air delivery rate (CADR) for the room size. The CADR describes how well the device reduces tobacco smoke, dust, pollen and wildfire smoke. To reduce fine particles, select a device with the highest CADR. Choose an air purifier with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. Avoid devices that produce ozone. Not all air purifiers are made equal.
