From The Hindu, June 25, 1975: Gold bank on model of unit trust suggested
Bombay, June 24: Mr. Shantilal Sonawala, President of the Bombay Bullion Association, told pressmen here to-day that a 'gold bank' should be set up to mobilise the stock of gold.
He said that the gold bank could be run on the model of the Unit Trust. It could issue a certificate of unit expressed in terms of the quantity of gold deposited with the bank.
'The unit may be say 10 gms of gold. One can purchase this unit against deposit of gold. The bank is under obligation to return this gold either on demand or after a stipulated period as may be discussed and finalised,' he suggested.
'When the bank accumulates such gold, it deposits the same with the Central Bank here in India with the Reserve Bank and gets a loan on liberal terms. The bank invests this loan money in securities, shares or other productive investments on the line of the Unit Trust of India to get a fair return on such capital. The bank declares the dividend to its gold depositors from such earnings,' he added.
Mr. Sonawala also wanted the Government of India to formulate a policy for exporting gold.
From statistics available, he said, India had a stock of 4,500 tonnes equivalent to 144 million ounces of gold valued at Rs. 22,000 crores.
As regards the export of silver, Mr. Sonawala said that about 150 million ounces of silver had been exported out of India till the end of 1974. The figure included official as well as unofficial exports. Thus they had been left with a stock of about 2,600 million ounces of silver.

Gold price prediction today: Where is gold rate headed amidst easing Iran-Israel tensions? Here's the outlook
Gold rate today: Weakening bias may persist after a volatile week as prices cools off in line with easing geopolitical tensions. (AI image) Gold price prediction today: Gold rates have been declining amidst easing Iran-Israel tensions and lower demand for safe haven assets. Maneesh Sharma, AVP - Commodities & Currencies, Anand Rathi Shares and Stock Brokers shares his views and recommendations for gold investors: Weakening bias may persist after a volatile week as prices cools off in line with easing geopolitical tensions Last week global central banks showed caution with mixed policy moves, the US Fed continued to pause, signalling slower cuts on stagflation concerns, Swiss and Norwegian banks did cut, while BoE and the BoJ held steady. Economic data highlighted strains across regions amid escalating geopolitical risks. Global equities mostly closed lower on Middle East tensions, while US Treasuries rallied, the dollar edged up, and oil advanced. In the current week gold started with a modest upside on escalating middle east geopolitics but gave up gains on Tuesday as the US President Donald Trump announced that both nations had agreed to a complete ceasefire, adding that Iran will begin the truce immediately, followed by Israel. The yellow metal also hit an all-time high last week on MCX after Israel launched military operations targeting Iran's nuclear power plant sites. Investors now turn their attention to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who is set to testify before US Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday, for any signals on the future path of interest rates. After setting a record just over $3,500 an ounce in April in spot markets, gold had consolidated in a roller coaster ride, while bearish sentiment has now started to seep into the market despite geopolitical tensions. This is due to the fact that gold prices have now discounted major fundamentals while a wave of corrective moves looks likely in July month. On the fundamental side, prices could look ahead to Fed Chair testimony for further clues on monetary policy outlook amid a data heavy week ahead. Gold Weekly View: Sideways to Downside (1 - 2 weeks) Gold Strategy: Sell on Rise MCX Gold looks to test downside support at around Rs. 95,200 - 94,800 per 10 gm levels on Aug. futures contract (CMP Rs. 97,240) in the weeks ahead. In International spot markets (CMP $3320/oz), a close below $ 3270 on daily basis is required for further downside up to $3225-3220 per oz in spot. India Gears Up To Launch Landmark Social Security Scheme For Gig Workers
Last Updated: The government plans to extend benefits of Ayushman Bharat to nearly one crore gig and platform workers In a major step toward formalising protection for India's growing gig economy, the government is preparing to roll out a dedicated social security scheme for gig and platform workers under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)—the world's largest publicly funded health insurance program. The announcement, made as part of the Union Budget 2025, marks a watershed moment for the country's informal workforce, which has long remained outside the ambit of structured welfare systems. PM-JAY, also known as Ayushman Bharat, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 23, 2018, and currently provides Rs 5 lakh health insurance per family per year to over 50 crore citizens. Now, the government plans to extend its benefits to nearly 1 crore gig and platform workers—a category that includes delivery personnel, drivers, and freelance service providers across digital platforms. According to sources in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, over 20 lakh gig workers have already registered on the e-Shram portal and will soon be issued unique identification numbers that will link them to welfare benefits. To accelerate this drive, the government has mobilised labour offices, community centres, and EPF offices, alongside a widespread awareness campaign. A formal notification has also been issued to all platform aggregators, directing them to register both themselves and their workers under the upcoming scheme—a move that puts responsibility on companies like ride-sharing apps and food delivery platforms to ensure compliance. India's gig economy is growing rapidly and is projected to reach 23.5 million workers by 2030. While it has created flexible employment opportunities, especially in sectors like e-commerce, logistics, and transport, the workforce remains highly vulnerable. Despite their essential contribution to the economy, gig workers have so far operated largely outside the formal social security net. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that the final contours of the scheme are in advanced stages of preparation, with most of the groundwork already complete. 'While many countries are still debating how to bring gig workers under social welfare coverage, India has taken a lead by moving swiftly toward a formalised scheme," said a senior official involved in the process. It is learnt that the scheme could be launched by the end of 2025, but for implementation to begin, an amendment to the existing labour codes may be required — a matter that is currently under consideration. The government is also actively considering adding pension benefits as part of a broader social security package for gig workers. Stakeholder consultations are underway, involving policymakers, labour experts, platform companies, and worker representatives to finalise the modalities. The ambitious move is being seen as part of the Modi government's broader effort to bring economic dignity and structured support to workers on the margins of India's labour economy. If implemented successfully, the scheme could become a global benchmark in gig worker welfare—offering a scalable model for other countries facing similar challenges in the digital labour space. IndiaMart shares get Rs 3,800 target price, stock jumps 6%
Shares of IndiaMart Intermesh jumped around 6% to the day's high of Rs 2,650 on the BSE today after domestic brokerage firm Nuvama Institutional Equities upgraded the stock to Buy and raised the target price to Rs 3,800. ADVERTISEMENT 'We upgrade IndiaMart from 'REDUCE' to 'BUY'—following earlier downgrades in Oct-23 to 'HOLD' and Oct-24 to 'REDUCE'—as we believe the business is entering a new demand upcycle,' Nuvama said. IndiaMart shares were trading at a one-year forward P/E of 28x, compared to the historical average of 45x. The stock is still down around 3% over the past year. Arguing that a new demand cycle will begin—starting with improvement in traffic and unique business enquiries, followed by a rise in net subscriber additions and, ultimately, an acceleration in collection growth—the brokerage said valuation should rerate as the management focuses on enhancing customer engagement metrics.'We are increasing earnings estimates by ~9–10% for FY26E/27E, driven by higher revenue growth, though we are lowering profitability are raising the target valuation multiple from 22x to 35x—the same as the pre-downgrade level—due to improving growth prospects, thereby increasing the target price from Rs 2,100 to Rs 3,800,' Nuvama noted. ADVERTISEMENT Stating that the company's management has made several changes to address structural issues—such as improving the platform, insourcing part of the sales force, and now investing in branding and marketing—Nuvama said IndiaMart is on the right path. The company has reduced the number of supplier enquiries from ~7 to fewer than 4, thereby reducing competition among suppliers.'Moreover, investing in attracting buyers will ensure there is plenty of enquiry volume for everyone to flourish. We believe headwinds have bottomed out and these investments are ready to deliver results. ADVERTISEMENT We reckon an improvement in subscriber additions shall occur by Q2/Q3, which will lead to a revival in collection growth,' it added.
