Agencies
Turkey's state energy company TPAO is joining a major natural gas field off Azerbaijan as a partner, in a deal that will mark a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Monday.
The gas production-sharing agreement will be signed between TPAO, Azerbaijan's SOCAR and British energy giant BP on Tuesday and covers the Shafag-Asiman offshore block in the Caspian Sea, Bayraktar told the Baku Energy Week conference.
He described the partnership between Turkey and Azerbaijan as a 'strategic energy alliance built on deep-rooted history, shared culture and a common vision' and said the new deal would enhance joint production in Azerbaijan.
The Shafag-Asiman offshore block has long been viewed as a promising site for hydrocarbon exploration. It is 125 kilometres (78 miles) southeast of Baku and at a depth of 650-800 metres, according to SOCAR's website. The first exploration well was drilled in 2020.
'Hopefully, we will finalize the agreement here. We have acquired a 30 percent stake. Our partners are SOCAR and BP. We hope to begin production at this field,' Bayraktar told reporters on the sidelines of the conference.
In a message sent to the opening ceremony of the event, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reaffirmed Turkey's commitment to deepening energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, calling their joint projects a key to regional and European energy security.
Erdogan praised the enduring partnership between Ankara and Baku, which he said has been crowned with joint infrastructure projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC), Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines, and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).
'Our collaboration not only benefits Turkey and Azerbaijan but also continues to make significant contributions to the energy security of the region and Europe,' said thepresident.
On the sidelines of the event, Bayraktar held a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which he described as productive, focusing on expanding cooperation across various energy domains.
'TPAO's presence in Azerbaijan is growing.
We're also discussing collaboration on additional fields and will continue to ramp up our activity in the Caspian Sea,' he said.
Bayraktar echoed Erdoğan's view that Turkish-Azerbaijani energy projects contribute to Europe's energy security.
'In the coming period, we anticipate new developments regarding projects that aim to deliver gas to Europe from alternative and additional sources,' he said.
He also highlighted Azerbaijan's increasing investments in renewables and revealed plans for cross-border clean energy infrastructure.
'In the period ahead, we will develop projects for generating renewable energy in Nakhchivan and transporting it to Turkey, and through Turkey on to Europe,' he added.
The remarks come at a time of rising global energy uncertainty driven by geopolitical conflicts, aging infrastructure and market volatility.

The profit rate was equivalent to a credit spread of 80 basis points over the US Treasury Rate, which was well inside QIB's fair value and lower than secondary market spreads of all Qatari banks, reflecting the positive perception of international investors around QIB's credit quality. Moreover, QIB's profit rate was the lowest achieved by a GCC bank for a senior unsecured 5 year issuance in 2025. QIB announced its intention to issue a Sukuk on Monday morning and conducted calls throughout the day with European, Asian and Middle Eastern accounts. US doubles steel, aluminium tariffs as new 50% rates take effect
Agencies Asteep hike in US import tariffs on steel and aluminium took effect on Wednesday, after US President Donald Trump ordered the tariff rate to be doubled to 50 percent. The tariffs, which took effect at 04:01 am GMT, doubled from 25 percent to 50 percent of the goods' value as Trump seeks to correct alleged trade imbalances and strengthen domestic industry in the United States. Steel and aluminium imports from the United Kingdom are exempt and will remain subject to the existing 25 percent tariff, the White House said. This is based on a trade agreement recently concluded between Washington and London. The measure is likely to make it more difficult to import the products in question and lead to higher prices. In 2024, the US was the world's largest steel importer after the European Union. According to the US government, the most important countries of origin are Canada, Brazil and Mexico. Germany is also among the 10 largest exporters to the USA ccording to the German Steel Industry Association, the US is the most important sales market for the European steel United States sources aluminum primarily from Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), China and South Korea. Trump has alreadyannounced, threatened, or implemented numerous other tariffs with the stated aim of securing better trade agreements.

Ukraine allies pledge continued support
dpa Brussels Defence ministers from the Ukraine Defence Contact Group pledged further support for Ukraine on Wednesday despite the absence of US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth from the meeting. The talks, once led by the United States, are chaired by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and UK Defence Secretary John Healey and aim to coordinate and raise further military support for Kiev. The format, also dubbed the Ramstein Group, comprises around 50 countries and was initiated by former US secretary of defense Lloyd Austin to help Ukraine defend itself from a full-scale Russian attack. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced a new support package for maritime security worth €400 million ($457 million). The package will include over 100 vessels, like patrol boats, transport boats, interceptors, special operations craft, over 50 sea drones, weapon systems, reserve parts and training, Brekelmans said. Ukraine's European allies are under increased pressure to step up aid after Washington suspended US military aid to Kiev and put its commitment to safeguarding Europe into question. Hegseth did not attend the meeting, after Washington had previously made clear that it no longer wants to lead the pledging meetings. Pistorius said that so far there was no indication that Washington's decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine was final.
