Arthur tips star for England recall ahead of Ashes

The Advertiser9 hours ago

Leeds head coach Brad Arthur has backed Jake Connor to make his England return after the Rhinos half-back produced another dazzling display in the Rhinos' richly entertaining 48-30 win over Leigh at Headingley.
Connor kicked eight from eight conversions and set up the final try for Mikolaj Oledzki just three days before Shaun Wane names his performance squad ahead of the Autumn Ashes against Australia.
Despite stern competition from the likes of Wigan's Harry Smith and Hull KR hero Mikey Lewis, Arthur believes Connor ought to be in the reckoning for his first England appearance since 2018.
The former Parramatta mentor said: "I think he's probably done enough to get a mention. We've got a quite a good representation in there and if the boys keep playing well it only enhances Jake's opportunities."
Asked if the often confrontational Connor is the kind of player whom the Australians might fear having to face, the Sydney-born Arthur grinned before respoding: "I'm pretty happy with Jake's behaviour on the field.
"He's been very discreet when he's having a little niggle, and he's doing a pretty good job of hiding it."
Leeds' eight-try show was exactly what Arthur ordered after last week's painful loss at St Helens, and he conceded he was prepared to overlook some of the defensive frailties in a remarkably open 14-try affair.
"You can sit here and be negative and talk about the defence of both teams but that sort of game is what the fans want to see, lots of tries and great skill on show," added Arthur.
"We came here to have a response from last week and go after the game and we did that, so that's all I'm worried about. It was fourth versus third and we jumped a spot there.
"We've done a lot of nice things. Overall we're trying to grow the game and it's what people want to see. I'll put it down to a nice win."
Leigh's defeat came at a price as head coach Adrian Lam revealed full-back David Armstrong and winger Darnell McIntosh are set to miss the upcoming games against leading duo Wigan and Hull KR after aggravating knee injuries at Headingley.
Armstrong, who started the game heavily strapped, required lengthy treatment after 15 minutes and was eventually withdrawn at half-time before McIntosh, who temporarily replaced him at the back, was struck by a similar problem.
"(Armstrong) will be out for a couple of weeks now," confirmed Lam. "He's had a bit of a knee injury, and with McIntosh it's the same thing with the knee, and I think he'll (also) be out for a couple of weeks."
Lam was less enamoured with the open nature of the game than Arthur, but conceded he could have expected little more after a gruelling week in the wake of last week's tiring win over Catalans Dragons in France.
"It was a weird game - we looked lethargic from last week in that heat," he said. "It was a short turnaround and it looked like we hadn't played together at times tonight.
"I think the fans got their money's worth (but) some of the things we were doing in the game were just uncharacteristic. Having said that, we scored some very good tries and didn't give up."

Footy world divided by controversial Josh Addo-Carr call in Dragons' win

Parramatta was denied a try after a hugely controversial call in the second half of their 34-20 loss to St George-Illawarra on Saturday night. The Dragons led 26-4 at halftime after a dominant opening 40 minutes and appeared ready to coast to victory at WIN Stadium. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. But the Eels had other ideas, scoring three tries in an 11-minute stretch to roar back into the contest at 26-20. Then came the moment that will have plenty of people talking. The Eels moved the ball to the left side of the field with just over 17 minutes remaining, when Sean Russell found Josh Addo-Carr on the left wing. The man known as the Foxx broke a Corey Allan tackle and passed back inside to Russell, who had clear air in front of him to stroll to the line and give Parra the chance to tie the game at 26-26. But the touch judge had other ideas, lifting his flag and ruling Addo-Carr had touched the sideline to stun the Eels fans watching on. When the replay was shown, it was one of the tightest calls you could see on the footy field and far from convincing. 'Addo-Carr is away, it might be 26-26 in a moment,' Andrew Voss yelled on Fox League. 'No the flag is up, a foot over the sideline. Our man is standing by his decision. 'Addo-Carr, left leg down and then the right, where is it? Could be this one. I don't know. 'If it's not, it's as close as you can go. Oh boy.' Steve Roach added: 'I don't know about that. How could naked eye make a call? 'He had a player down in front of him, how could he see it?' Voss then clarified the ruling, stating: 'That is incredible that moment, but once the sideline official's flag goes up, the protocol is you don't go to the Bunker. It was going to be 26-all. 'Send some Panadol to the Dragons' box.' Fans were deeply divided by the incident on social media. Lui Zacher tweeted: 'Touchie has X ray vision to see through a Dragons player, and CSI: Enhance technology to call Addo-Carr's boot on the line 15 metres away, but someone chucks a forward pass right in front and it's 'I didn't see nuffin'.' @aotesam wrote: 'I think his foot *just* went into touch … but there is absolutely no way you can call it with confidence.' Jack Holdsworth said: 'The first time a useless touch judge has ever made a live call and he reckons he's seen 1mm of Addo-Carrs foot on the sideline. Give me a f**king spell.' Mr_Ives wrote: 'That Dragons Eels touchie could see Uranus without a telescope.' Gemma Rogers suggested: 'I thought the touchie got that right. Looked like his foot was just on the line.' LJ declared: 'Parra have been screwed big time there, that was never in touch!' The Dragons eventually scored another try through Valentine Holmes with five minutes remaining to establish a match-winning lead. Voss was left hoping Addo-Carr's moment wouldn't be the biggest talking point of a great game of footy. 'There's been so much happening in this game,' he said. 'I know people are going to go back to the Addo-Carr foot on the line. 'If he's in, it's the closest to being out anyway there's ever been and that would be 26-all at that point. 'But I'd rather savour the game at the moment, rather than the controversy.'

Puntin delivers the 150th winner for Bjorn Baker this season

Trainer Bjorn Baker brought up a milestone 150th winner for the season when progressive gelding Puntin showed tremendous fighting qualities to prevail at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Baker has been enjoying the best season of his training career and reached his new benchmark with a month still to go in the season. Puntin has contributed to four of those victories throughout the 2024/25 campaign after he burst onto the scene over the summer with three straights at Nowra, Moruya and Warwick Farm. The son of Super Seth toughed it out on speed to score his maiden city victory in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m). 'It's never easy to win on a Saturday and I think there is more in store, he has a great winning record,' Baker said. 'He was tough and it was a good ride. 'I still think the best is yet to come, once we get him up over a bit further.' Bjorn Baker looks on after Ashley Morgan guided Puntin to victory at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Photo:. Puntin was only narrowly beaten first-up this preparation at Canterbury and appreciated the step up from 1250m to 1400m. Jockey Ash Morgan found the front early on and was able to control the tempo of the race. Puntin ($4.40 ) continued to find over the concluding stages to hold off the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained Don't Forget Jack ($3.90) by a short neck with Chris Waller's Maori Chief ($13) a half neck away in third. 'He had to work a little bit to get there and probably just overdid it a touch,' Baker said. 'I thought it was a good effort. I thought up to 1400m would suit today.' Morgan's decision to go to the front early on held the key to Puntin's latest success. 'I was open to taking a sit today but they put me into a position where had to grab the bull by the horns a little bit,' Morgan said. 'Lucky when he was there he rested for me really well. 'I felt like I was going to be vulnerable late because of that work in the first furlong but he is an incredibly tough horse with a lovely attitude. 'He kept sticking his head out.' The victory continued Morgan's remarkable season, which has included a maiden Group 1, and his third campaign with more than 100 winners.

Josh Parr pulls right rein on Elamaz to cap winning treble at Rosehill

Back-up Baker set for return Bjorn Baker was considering a seven-day back-up for Thunderlips into the listed Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill after he gave the Warwick Farm trainer a double on Saturday at the track. Baker, who earlier won with Puntin, went to 86 Sydney winners for the season as he chases a first century in town. He is second only to Chris Waller (145) and went past 150 winners nationwide for the first time. Zoustar four-year-old Thunderlips, $450,000 yearling, backed up a Randwick win on June 7 with a fighting effort to catch Zouatica by a long neck in the 1500m benchmark 88. 'He's hard to catch at times but he's going very well,' Baker said. 'He loves it wet, too, and there's a bit of rain this week. Maybe back-up Baker could return for the back-end of the season.' Asked if he would nominate Thunderlips for the Winter Stakes, he said, 'Why not?' Penza gives Waller a peach Veteran jockey Jeff Penza repaid the faith of premier trainer Chris Waller with a perfect ride to break a run of placings for Changing Colours. Waller called on the 55-year-old, who rides mostly on the provincial and country circuits, to fill the void for him at Rosehill with seven bookings, three of which were later scratched. Changing Colours had two wins and six placings in eight career starts, all in Victoria, including seconds at her past three runs, before tackling the 1400m benchmark 78 for fillies and mares on Saturday. Penza had the four-year-old near last on the turn before negotiating a path through the field. He found clear air at the 250m and Changing Colours charged to a one-and-three-quarter lengths win over Fairway Star. Penza, who rode Summer Flame to victory for Waller in the listed Denise's Joy Stakes at Scone last month, has come back from serious falls at Taree in 2023 (broken ribs, concussion and damaged lungs) and Queanbeyan (leg fractures, broken wrist and shoulder) in 2018. 'That was a good ride, he was patient and he took his gaps and used angles to safely get her into the clear,' Waller said. 'He's a great rider and horseman, and it's a pleasure to have him aboard. He's very fit and keen, and he really is a credit to himself, the way he's stayed fit and mobile. 'He doesn't ride work for us but when we get stuck, I call him. I called him yesterday, and he was 'yeah, no worries'. If you want him there, he'll be there.' Misterkipchoge later broke a 17-month, 18-start drought to give Waller a double. The four-year-old, with Jean Van Overmiere aboard, edged out stablemate Pure Alpha in the 1800m benchmark 78 for a first win since saluting on debut in Australia in January last year. He had eight placings in between the victories. At Eagle Farm, Sydney-based Irishman Tom Sherry rode his first group 1 winner, taking Tashi to victory for Randwick trainer Peter Snowden in the Tattersall's Tiara. Veteran mare lifts for Curtis Trainer Lee Curtis said he may have to put back retirement plans for Bacio Del Mist after she was strong late to win the 2400m Stayers Cup on her home track at Rosehill on Saturday. Jockey Alysha Collett weaved a path through the small field from near last and the seven-year-old lifted to hit the lead 50 m out and beat Mormona by a neck. Collett finished with a double after winning the last on Lady Extreme. 'She's had horrible luck,' said Curtis, who trains a team of 19 with his wife, Cherie. 'The plan was just to go through this prep then wind it up, but these old blokes that own it, they'll probably say we'll race her another 12 months. 'She's been in work a long time. She's had just a little let-up. She's a marvel, for a $30,000 yearling out of Zoustar.' Bacio Del Mist has seven wins and eight placings from 44 starts, with $356,505 in stakes. Super result for Seth's mates The owners of Puntin savoured a special first Saturday win for the talented three-year-old at Rosehill, and trainer Bjorn Baker is confident bigger victories are to come. A $60,000 son of Super Seth, Puntin led the benchmark 72 handicap (1400m) for three- and four-year-olds under Ash Morgan and was strong late to hold out Don't Forget Jack by a short neck. Loading It was a fourth win in six starts for Puntin, which was named after Seth Puntin. 'He died of cancer about two or three years ago and when we bought the Super Seth, it kind of made sense to name him after Seth,' part-owner Cameron Sinclair said. 'They are all his really good mates, so it's a good story and a bloody good horse. We're in Disneck as well, and some of them are first-time owners, so it's really good.'
