A$AP Rocky Closing Arguments Begin, Rihanna Appears in Court with Toddler Sons

Yahoo13-02-2025

A$AP Rocky's firearm assault trial entered closing arguments Thursday, with prosecutors casting the Grammy-nominated rapper as the initial antagonist of a street scuffle that allegedly ended in real gunfire on a Hollywood street corner three years ago.
But just minutes after Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec stood at a lectern and started his summation, all eyes turned to the gallery door as Rihanna walked into the courtroom with the couple's two toddler sons, RZA and Riot. The superstar singer took a seat in the front row with her youngest child on her lap. Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, sat feet away at the defense table, quietly listening as Przelomiec continued his presentation.

'This is not a difficult case. The question for you to answer in this case boils down to one important question,' Przelomiec said. 'Did Mr. Mayers, the man at the table, use a real gun or did he use a fake gun?'
In comments ranging from sarcastic to indignant, Przelomiec scoffed at Mayers' claim he was carrying a prop gun that night, calling it 'absurd.' He argued the gun was real, and claimed surveillance clips from two locations prove it. He said when the gun was first brandished at a parking garage the night of Nov. 6, 2021, Mayers' friend A$AP Illz immediately jumped into action to defuse the situation. He said when the gun appeared a second time a block away, Relli, born Terell Ephron, dove behind Illz, born Illijah Ulanger, to use him as a 'human shield.'
'Nobody on that video is acting like that's a fake gun. They're all reacting to a real gun,' he said. 'If he's holding a prop gun and Mr. Ephron knows it's a prop gun, why does he have to run toward Mr. Ephron?…Why does he have to lunge [and] try to duck and dodge, side to side, to try to get a line of sight?'
The closing arguments followed an 11-day trial spread across four weeks in which prosecutors presented lengthy testimony from Ephron along with a woman who watched the incident from a seventh-floor balcony and four investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department. Mayers declined to testify in his own defense. His star witness was A$AP Twelvyy, born Jamel Phillips, a fellow Harlem rapper and A$AP Mob member who was with him that night. Phillips told jurors both he and Ephron knew the gun was a prop. He said when it first appeared, Ephron taunted Mayers, 'Shoot that fake-ass gun.'
Mayers, 36, is fighting two felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. He's facing up to 24 years in prison if convicted as charged, though he would likely receive much less. The 'Sundress' rapper claims the gun was a prop obtained from the 'D.M.B.' video he filmed with Rihanna in the Bronx in July 2021. His defense claims Ephron was the aggressor that night, knew the gun was fake and later concocted evidence to shake him down for money.
Prosecutors allege Mayers fired two 9 mm bullets at Ephron during the height of their argument at the corner of Selma Avenue and Vista Del Mar Avenue. During his direct testimony, Ephron said one bullet grazed his left hand, leaving visible wounds under his knuckles.
In his closing Thursday, Przelomiec said even though no one got seriously injured, the case was still serious. He conceded that video from the first confrontation at the entrance of a parking garage didn't capture the moment Mayers allegedly pointed the gun at Ephron, but he said that didn't matter. The video showed the alleged gun in Mayers' hands, and that was enough, he argued.
'The moment the defendant pulled that gun out, armed himself and was capable of injuring Mr. Ephron, that crime was completed at that moment,' he said. 'It does not even need to be fired.'
One of the friends with Mayers that night was A$AP Twelvyy, born Jamel Phillips. During his two days testifying as the defense's star witness, Phillips told jurors that everyone allegedly knew Mayers was carrying a fake gun, claiming he carried it as a deterrent because he was the victim of prior violence and a stalker. Under oath, Phillips testified that Ephron was the initial aggressor when they all met up the night of the incident. He said Mayers tried to walk away, but Ephron pursued them around a corner, taunting Mayers. Phillips further claimed Ephron physically attacked Ulanger once they reached the corner of Selma Ave. and Vista Del Mar Ave., leading Mayers to fire two alleged warning shots to scare him off.
For his part, Ephron testified that Mayers grabbed him first during their initial scuffle outside a and threatened to kill him. He said he only put his hands on Ulanger to avoide getting shot. He described feeling like he was 'in a movie' during the incident. He admitted filing a $30 million lawsuit but said it was only fair considering his life has been a 'living hell' ever since. He said he's been labeled a 'snitch' and lost his music management company because no artists want to work with him anymore.
Both sides have claimed the blurry surveillance video of the alleged shooting supports their rendition of events. It was recorded with no sound, but prosecutors synchronized it with the sound of two loud pop recorded from a different camera around the corner. Mayers' lawyers used the same methodology to come up with their own synchronization. In the prosecution's version, the first pop comes just before Ephron tangles with Ulanger. In the defense version, the first pop comes after Ephron is seen in contact with Ulanger, supporting the defense claim Mayers fired to defend Ulanger. The judge allowed both videos to be admitted, leaving jurors with the task of determining which made more sense.
On Tuesday, Judge Mark S. Arnold told jurors for the first time that they could consider a secondary basis to acquit Mayers if they simply don't accept that he was carrying a prop gun. The judge said if jurors determine Mayers 'reasonably believed' that he or one of friends with him that night were in 'imminent danger' of suffering bodily injury — and that a reasonable amount of force was necessary to defend against that danger — they could find Mayers not guilty.
Lead defense lawyer Joseph Tacopina is due to give his closing argument on Thursday. After jurors filed out for the morning break, Mayers walked over and picked up one if the couple's sons and sat down with Rihanna on the bench.

FBI Boss Kash Patel Is Suing to Prove He's Not Nightclub Hopping

Kash Patel has sued MSNBC columnist Frank Figliuzzi over his unverified claim last month that the FBI director had been at 'nightclubs' more than he'd been in his office. Patel filed a lawsuit on June 2 in Texas against Figliuzzi, a former assistant director for counterintelligence at the FBI who now serves as a senior national security and intelligence analyst for MSNBC and NBC News. The complaint accuses Figliuzzi of 'fabricating a specific lie' about Patel over his nightclub allegation, and claimed there was 'no basis for [the] Defendant's fabrication, and Defendant's use of the weasel word, 'reportedly,' is itself a fabrication,' according to the New York Post. The suit called Figliuzzi's claim a 'maliciously false and defamatory statement' and accused the columnist of making up the story to 'discredit Director Patel because of Defendant's clear animus toward Director Patel.' It noted that the commentator has previously been critical of the FBI head's qualifications. Patel has not spent 'a single minute inside of a nightclub' since becoming FBI director, the lawsuit states. The FBI and an attorney for Patel did not immediately return The Daily Beast's request for comment. Figliuzzi has been approached for comment via his website. Figliuzzi, a 25-year veteran of the FBI, made the remark during a May 2 broadcast of Morning Joe. He claimed Donald Trump's pick to lead the bureau was not often present at its headquarters, the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C. 'Reportedly, he's been visible at nightclubs far more than he has been on the seventh floor of the Hoover building,' Figliuzzi said to Morning Joe co-host Jonathan Lemire. 'And there are reports that daily briefings to him have been changed from every day to maybe twice weekly.' 'The one word that keeps coming back at me from inside that building is 'chaos,'' he added. 'People don't know what's happening from day to day.' On the next Morning Joe broadcast the following Monday, Lemire told viewers Figliuzzi had made a 'misstatement.' 'Figliuzzi said that FBI director Kash Patel has reportedly been more visible at nightclubs than at his office at FBI headquarters. This was a misstatement. We have not verified that claim,' Lemire said. MSNBC declined to comment on the lawsuit. FBI spokesperson Ben Williamson wrote on X at the time that Figliuzzi's claims were 'bogus,' writing, 'I see him here at HQ every day.' Patel's appointment was and has been the subject of significant backlash, given his limited senior law enforcement experience and concerns over his past promotion of pro-Trump conspiracy theories.

Diddy's alleged 'sexual deviant' behavior distracts from government's case: expert

Sean "Diddy" Combs' ex-girlfriend provided the jury more insight into the rapper's life outside his music mogul status when she returned to the witness stand Tuesday for cross-examination in his federal trial for sex crimes. Using a pseudonym, "Jane" testified that she broached the subject of rehab for the "Last Night" rapper after allegedly witnessing him "overdoing the partying." She claimed he would offer her ecstasy before engaging in role play and that Diddy liked to use the words "voyeurism" and "escapism" to describe his fantasies of watching her participate in sexual encounters with male escorts. Attorney David Seltzer told Fox News Digital that while Jane's testimony was compelling, her claims did little to aid in the prosecution's case to convict Diddy of the five charges he's facing. "The testimony from the latest witness, Jane, continues to show the world that Mr. Combs is a sexual deviant," Seltzer said. "Someone who thought he was untouchable and above the law. Still, while there is no doubt Mr. Combs broke multiple laws. The charges he is facing in federal court are not laws he has broken. "Jane's testimony, voice notes and all, while chilling and demonstrate Mr. Combs' controlling behavior, does not, in my opinion, prove the government's case. Rather, it further depicts Mr. Combs as morally reprehensible and as such someone the jury should convict." Former federal prosecutor Neahma Rahmani told Fox News Digital that this case "comes down to coercion versus consent." "Combs' lawyers cross-examined victim Jane the entire day and suggested that Jane chose to participate in the hotel nights. For the first time, we heard the defense's theory of their case," Rahmani said. "The testimony from the latest witness, Jane, continues to show the world that Mr. Combs is a sexual deviant." "Combs' lawyers also suggested that he was a drug addict and taking antidepressants, likely to play the sympathy card for the jury." During cross-examination, Jane said in 2022 she was trying to figure out her relationship with Diddy and came upon the term "cuckold," a word for a man turned on watching his woman have sex with another man. According to Jane, she wanted to know what was driving the rapper and to find an understanding of his alleged fantasies. She said she found multiple reasons, including that a "cuckold" derives pleasure from seeing his woman receive pleasure from another man. Jane testified that "cucks" could also have a curiosity that they were too ashamed to experience themselves, so they used a woman. Jane claimed Diddy liked to use voyeurism and escapism. "I would use the work 'cuck' for him," she told his defense lawyers. She also testified that Diddy was upfront with her about dating multiple women at the start of their relationship in 2021. She explained the rapper was "polyamorous" and she was OK with that at the time. She testified at first she didn't mind because she was just getting to know Diddy. According to Jane, she was forced to participate in "hotel nights." During these sessions, which could last from 24 hours to multiple days, she was allegedly expected to have sex with other men while Diddy watched. "Jane's testimony, voice notes and all, while chilling and demonstrate Mr. Combs' controlling behavior, does not, in my opinion, prove the government's case. Rather, it further depicts Mr. Combs as morally reprehensible and as such someone the jury should convict." While on the stand, Jane told defense lawyer Teny Geragos that she had been texting Diddy about him buying purses for another woman. Geragos commented that Jane received a bag of her own. "No, I only got trauma … after three-and-a-half years, I really don't think I garnered anything," Jane told the court. Geragos pressed, "How much do Bottega bags cost?" to which Jane replied, "How much does my body cost?" before asking the court for a break from testimony. When court resumed, Jane apologized to Geragos. "She claimed to be righteous and was going to walk away from Mr. Combs after her ask of '3 months' of continued financial support, but here we are over a year later and Mr. Combs is still paying her rent and legal fees as she testified against him," Seltzer said. "Is that the testimony of a victim? Is that the face of fear? I think Jane is primed to really help boost the defense case when all these points are honed in on." In a federal indictment unsealed on Sept. 17, Combs was charged with racketeering conspiracy (RICO); sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars or a maximum sentence of life in prison. He has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, in which witnesses have testified to alleged rape, sexual assault, severe physical abuse, forced labor and drug trafficking. The trial is expected to wrap by July 4.
