Driver who inspired F1 film touched by Brad Pitt thanks
A man who was in a crash that inspired a Brad Pitt movie said it was a "pinch yourself moment" when the actor thanked him for sharing his story. Formula 1 driver Martin Donnelly, who lives in Norfolk, suffered serious injuries in a crash in Jerez, Spain, in 1990.Speaking at the premiere of F1 in London, Pitt thanked him for "putting his energy and guidance" into the new movie."It was just a pinch yourself moment," Mr Donnelly said. "I said 'is he talking to me, is he referring to me'. It is one of those memories I will cherish for life."
Mr Donnelly was driving a Lotus Lamborghini which disintegrated against a barrier in a high-speed crash.He suffered damage to his right leg which meant he could never compete in a top-end single seater car again.His accident influenced the story line of the new film, seeing Pitt's character Sonny Hayes return to the wheel after he was in a crash.The 61-year-old actor undertook four months of driver training in Abu Dhabi as well as Silverstone and Rockingham in Northamptonshire.
Talking about watching the accident in the film, Donnelly told the BBC: "It was such a surreal moment. It was something only I could appreciate."After one of the operations the surgeon said, 'that is it - you will never drive an F1 car again'."But he does not know the mind of a racing driver. We are stubborn and determined and selfish."On 23 February 1993 I drove a Jordan car around Silverstone and that was me giving my surgeons the pledge to say you know your books, but you do not know me, and here I am."
Speaking about meeting Pitt, Mr Donnelly added: "It was just a surreal moment."A highly rated A-List star like Brad Pitt asking me for advice and direction."Mr Donnelly still works with Lotus and runs his own driving academy.Rupert Manwaring, former team manager for Lotus, said: "He just had all of the right ingredients to be a good driver."It was pretty clear to me that he was going to be a real star."I think it has been a good thing for Martin and we were happy to support him."

Max Verstappen has admitted that he would prefer to stay at home and look after his two-month old baby rather than attend black tie events after he snubbed two premieres for Lewis Hamilton 's new F1 film. 'F1', which counts seven-time world champion Hamilton as an executive producer, was released on Wednesday amid fanfare from fans and drivers. Formula One stars were given a first glimpse of the movie, starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, in a private screening before the Monaco Grand Prix last month. The film's premiere in New York was attended by drivers Lando Norris, Ollie Bearmam, Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz. But Verstappen swerved both events and admitted he has not even watched the film yet, instead preferring to spend time looking after his newborn. The Red Bull driver welcomed his first child at the beginning of May with partner Kelly Piquet. The Dutchman, 27, told The Sun: 'Being authentic is not something I have to try and focus on. It's just who I am. 'I don't like to be on the red carpet and dress up in a suit. I don't like to interact with people that I don't really know, and have a fake smile and fake chat. It's horrible, I just don't enjoy it. 'I prefer to hang out with my friends and spend time with my little family. I also have a lot of other projects going on outside of F1. 'So any extra work like red carpets is not what I want to do. I'm at a stage of my career where I've achieved so much professionally. 'I'm just focusing outside of it now, like my big passions to make life more enjoyable and not just being performance driven.' 'With the nappies, some are more smelly than others!' The four-time world champion even declined to take part in an extra nightclub scene for the film with Brad Pitt. Other drivers took a greater interest in the movie. 'I'll just say, for the pure F1 fan, be open-minded to Hollywood films,' Williams driver Carlos Sainz said. Formula One teams were keen to help producers and granted the actors unprecedented access to their facilities. McLaren handed them access to their Woking headquarters while Williams allowed them to use their wind tunnel for four days. Silverstone was essentially rented out to film-makers for three months in summer 2023, leaving junior drivers unable to use the track. Hamilton's production company Dawn Apollo features in the opening credits and has been credited with playing a decisive role as he helped train Pitt and Idris in Formula 2 cars. Joseph Kosinski, who was behind Top Gun: Maverick, and directed the latest potential blockbuster, revealed ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix: 'Lewis was the first person I reached out to. 'I sent him an email and said, 'I want to make it as authentic as possible. Will you help me?' And luckily, Lewis said, 'Yes'. 'He was involved in all the technical details with fascinating advice. In Hungary, for instance, he said, 'If Brad's going to let someone pass during a blue flag and he wants it to be as tight as possible, he's only going to do that at turn six'. That kind of detail, I couldn't have gotten from anywhere else.'

For two years he was Kylie Minogue 's hunky toyboy, joining her on red carpets and in her £10million London mansion. Joshua Sasse was just 27 when he fell for the pop superstar, who was 20 years his senior, after she signed up for a guest role in his musical comedy TV series Galavant. Brit hunk Joshua played dashing knight Sir Gary Galavant whilst Kylie turned from pop princess to medieval princess to take on some raunchy scenes with the handsome young actor. But their romance didn't exactly have a fairytale beginning after it was reported that Joshua was still married to his ex Francesca Cini, who he shares a son with, when he met Kylie on set in the summer of 2015. The blossoming romance was an open secret on set though, so much so that even Joshua's co-star Vinnie Jones quipped that the actor had his sights set on Kylie from the start. 'I knew about them before anyone. Joshua was moving into her hotel the night before she came — on purpose,' Vinnie told The Sun. Vinnie would later go on to call Joshua an 'English k**bhead', who shocked co-stars when he romanced the much more famous Kylie. 'All the crew and everybody were like, "Oh no, what is she doing?" She was a long way from home and needed someone with an arm round her,' Vinnie said in a 2022 interview. The actor even claimed that Kylie's sister Dannii Minogue 'thanked me from the family, because I'd told Kylie that he was a bellend.' Despite misgivings from friends and family, Kylie and Joshua's romance moved quickly with the singer gushing about their connection in press interviews for the show throughout 2015. 'I can't actually put into words how happy I am… We just completely fit together. He gets me, I get him,' she told You Magazine. The two were indeed inseparable, with Joshua becoming Kylie's plus one at industry events before moving into her £10 million West London home. In February 2016, just six months after meeting, Joshua popped the question with a besotted Kylie gushing about their wedding plans and how she would take her fiance's surname, pointing out 'Sasse is a great name. In 2018, the songstress spoke with Red Magazine about the sudden split, telling the publication she'd had to 'rebuild herself physically and mentally' after the break-up. She even channelled her heartache into music, revealing that her 2018 country inspired album, the first record since 1997 which she co-wrote evey track on, had helped her come to terms with their broken engagement. 'The end of 2016 was not a good time for me. So when I started working on the album in 2017 it was, in many ways, a great escape,' she said at the time. 'I was quite fragile when I started work on it but being able to express myself in the studio made quick work of regaining my sense of self — writing about various aspects of my life, the highs and lows, with a real sense of knowing and of truth.'
