
Moharana, who turned waste into craft items, dies at 67

Kendrapada: Kamala Moharana, who gained national recognition for recycling waste materials into beautiful craft items, passed away in Cuttack on Saturday night. She was 67.
Moharana had sustained serious back injuries after a fall at her home in Kendrapada district's Khairabad village on Wednesday night.
Initially treated at the Kendrapada district headquarters hospital, she was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where she succumbed to her injuries.
She was cremated on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had praised Moharana's work during his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio address on Feb 26, 2023. He had taken blessings from her during a public meeting in Kendrapada on May 29, 2024. Moharana had also sent the PM a rakhi made from recycled materials last year.
She was invited by the Centre to attend the Republic Day parade in New Delhi on Jan 26.
Starting in 2016 with a small women's self-help group (SHG), Kamala empowered around 50 women to earn livelihood by turning waste materials like plastic and polythene into useful and decorative items. Her efforts not only supported families but also helped clean the environment.

"Plastic, polythene and other waste items cause pollution and she focused on those to create beautiful items. Her sudden death has shattered us," said Ganeswar Behera, Kendrapada MLA.
"Many women working under her helped turn waste into wonder. She will be remembered for her good work to clean the environment," said Mahakalapada MLA Durga Prasan Nayak.
Many political functionaries, social workers and well-wishers visited her home to pay their last respects.
Moharana is survived by her husband, five married daughters and son.

The state government is already having a land bank of 54,000 acres for the greenfield capital city, which is yet to be fully utilised by bringing in infrastructure and constructions and is going for an additional 40,000 acres of land under a second phase. Live Events On April 15, Narayana had announced that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on creating a 'mega city' combining adjacent Mangalagiri, Tadepalli, Guntur and Vijayawada with Amaravati. Further, he said the 48th Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) meeting chaired by the CM on Monday took a decision to confirm the L1 (least cost) bidders to construct five administrative towers in the core capital area of the greenfield capital city at an estimated cost of Rs 3,673 crore. Narayana said work on these towers will commence soon.

Gopal Singh Chawla TARN TARAN: The Counter Intelligence(CI) Wing of Punjab has uncovered a conspiracy involving a resident of Tarn Taran in collaboration with Gopal Singh Chawla, a prominent Khalistani leader in Pakistan, who is reportedly operating under the direct command of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Director General of Police, Punjab, Gaurav Yadav informed on Tuesday that CI, Punjab in a joint operation with Tarn Taran police have arrested Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan, a resident of Mohalla Rodupur, Gali Nazar Singh Wali, Tarn Taran who has been in contact with Chawla and used to share sensitive information concerning army movements during Operation Indoor. Chawla, a pro-Khalistan Sikh leader from Nankana Sahib and the chairman of Punjabi Sikh Sangat, has been consistently vocal in his anti-India rhetoric. He has reportedly played a key role in organizing anti-India demonstrations and is believed to be tasked by ISI with identifying 'soft targets' among Indian Sikh jathas visiting Pakistan on religious occasions .
