Billy Boston, 90, becomes rugby league's first knight

Boston, 90, who stared for Wigan and Great Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, was a trailblazer for black sportsmen and one of rugby league's greatest-ever players. He scored 478 tries in 488 matches for Wigan after making the switch from rugby union in 1953. The ceremony came before the King's Birthday Honours List was publicly announced over concerns for the former player's health. Boston has vascular dementia. "Billy Boston is a true trailblazer whose contributed hugely to rugby league," said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. "It is a historic wrong that a sport which is the backbone of so many communities has waited so long to receive this honour. "Boston is a legend of the game who overcame prejudice to represent Great Britain and opened the door to a more diverse game." The knighthood came after a campaign lead by local politicians and senior rugby league figures. Wigan Warriors owner Mike Danson said: "Without doubt Billy was a player who was –- and still is –- the biggest crowd favourite in rugby league." © 2025 AFP

South Africa gamble on Mulder at number three in WTC final against Australia

Mulder has only batted twice in Test matches at number three, making 15 against Sri Lanka in November and five against Pakistan in January, but he is now preparing to face a formidable Australia attack featuring Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. South Africa have impressive depth in batting, with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who has hit four Test centuries, dropping down to number seven in the order followed by Marco Jansen, who is a useful batsman as well as a dangerous bowler. Bavuma acknowledged the 27-year-old Mulder was "quite young in the position" of number three. But the skipper told reporters at Lord's on the eve of the WTC final that Mulder "has grown in the last two years in the red-ball format". "It is about giving him a lot more confidence and allowing him to do what he does best," he said. "He has an opportunity in a pressure situation and he can take comfort in the fact that the guys are backing him and we just want him to go out and play his natural game." Mulder failed to make a half-century in his first 24 Test innings before scoring 54 and 105 not out batting down the order in successive Tests against Bangladesh last October. Lungi Ngidi was chosen ahead of Dane Paterson even though his fellow paceman is used to the conditions at Lord's after playing English county cricket there for Middlesex this season. Bavuma said it was a tough decision but said he believed the combination of Ngidi and the medium-paced Mulder would complement the strike power of Kagiso Rabada and Jansen. Bavuma admitted South Africa had been outplayed when they toured Australia in 2022/23 -- a three-match series that the home team won 2-0. But it was a time of turmoil in South Africa's Test set-up following the resignation of Mark Boucher as coach. "It was a little bit of an eye-opener, seeing how their batters went about their business and facing their bowlers and how you are always under pressure," said Bavuma. But he said the series had enabled him to look at his own game and that the current team under coach Shukri Conrad was better equipped to compete against the Australians. McKeown cruises to 100m backstroke crown at Australian trials

McKeown, whose world record was taken by Smith last year, coasted home at Adelaide in 57.71 seconds ahead of Olympic 200m freestyle champion Mollie O'Callaghan (58.85), who also qualified. McKeown and Smith share the 20 fastest times in history with their showdown at the worlds in Singapore next month shaping as another major highlight in their storied rivalry. "There's still a lot of work that needs to go in, but that's just where I am at the moment," said McKeown, who holds the world record in the 50m and 200m backstroke. "I had a really good underwater, so happy with that." Fresh off an eye-opening performance in the 200m medley on Monday night, Ella Ramsay also qualified for the 100m breaststroke in 1:06.86. But Ramsay -- now under the wing of British breaststroke king Adam Peaty's ex-coach Mel Marshall -- was stunned by another young prospect in 16-year-old Sienna Toohey who clocked a career-best 1:06.55. "I'm so excited because I've worked so hard. I was so nervous," said Toohey, who was in tears afterwards. Another fast-improving star is Alex Perkins, who posted a sizzling personal best to win the 100m butterfly on Monday and make the plane to Singapore next month. She followed it up with the second fastest time ever by an Australian in the 50m butterfly heats and went even faster to win the final in 25.36. Lily Price, second to Perkins in the 100m butterfly, repeated the feat over 50m with both women potential medal prospects. "It's good to be able to convert faster from heats to finals," said Perkins. "I felt like I nailed my race plan." Only American Gretchen Walsh has swum quicker than Perkins this year. Another new talent announced himself in the men's 200m freestyle with 20-year-old Ed Sommerville scorching to the wall in 1:44.93, the world's second fastest this year behind German ace Lukas Maertens. Sam Short, who had already secured his ticket to Singapore in the 400m freestyle, qualified in second. "I'm glad to show what I can do," said Sommerville, who has had success in short-course swimming but was competing in his first long-course 200m freestyle in two years.
