Ashok Saraf
is among its most celebrated. Known as 'Mahanayak', 'Ashok Samrat', and 'Mama', he began his journey in theatre before making a mark on the big screen.
Along with a successful Marathi film career, he also appeared in several Hindi films like Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Koyla, Gupt, Yes Boss, and Singham.
Interestingly, he shares a long-standing friendship with fellow actor
Nana Patekar
, dating back to their early career days.
Early Careers and Support
Ashok Saraf began his career well before Nana Patekar. Both were active in theatre and performed in several shows together. At the time Nana was struggling to establish himself and faced financial difficulties, while Ashok was already a well-known actor.
It was Ashok who supported Nana during those early challenging years.
A Special Friendship Memory
At an event, Nana Patekar shared a touching memory about his friendship with Ashok Saraf. He revealed that whenever Ashok was traveling for a play, Nana would massage his feet and head with oil—and Ashok would pay him Rs. 5 for it.
During their time performing in the play Hamidabaichi Kothi, Ashok Saraf earned Rs. 250, while Nana Patekar received Rs.
50. In their free time, they often played card games, where Ashok would purposely lose to give Nana some extra money. Nana was aware of this, but accepted it due to his financial struggles.
A Generous Gesture in Tough Times
When Nana was in urgent need of money, Ashok visited him at home and handed him a blank cheque, saying he had Rs. 15,000 in his account and Nana could withdraw whatever he needed. Nana took Rs. 3,000, and to this day, Ashok has never asked him to repay it.

Last Updated: Himesh Reshammiya kicked off his Cap Mania tour with a memorable concert in Mumbai that has given everyone else FOMO. Ooooooooo… Aashiq banaya. 'You just had to be there." 'It was a complete riot." 'That was the best concert of my life. Period." Resounding reviews have emerged from those who attended the highly anticipated concert by Indian musician, actor, and heartthrob Himesh Reshammiya in Mumbai. The concert, a part of Reshammiya's maiden 'Cap Mania Tour" in India, is all over Instagram and understandably so. Dressed in a long coat, and donning a cap, the veteran musician had seats on his time machine. His fans hopped in to travel back to the golden era of Hindi music. Reshammiya aka Lord Himesh had a sold-out show. That over 11,000 people reportedly turned up to watch the hat-donning rockstar is no coincidence, and those who missed out on rocking to the tunes of the legend are now having an existential crisis. It worked. Reshammiya soon became a popular face in music videos. These played all the time on the television because listeners made requests to the music channels to play his music. The craze was such, that many millennial kids couldn't tell Hashmi and Reshammiya apart. And he is no one-hit-wonder. The 51-year-old has had bangers after bangers in his musical arsenal. When he wasn't singing, Reshammiya was acting in movies. Aap Kaa Surroor (2007), Karzzzz (2008), and most recently Badass Ravi Kumar (2025). The singer and musician may have lacked acting chops, but audiences have, in the past two decades, flocked to watch his meme-worthy cinema. The movies that get put under the 'so bad that it's so good" trope. The amount of hype around Badass Ravi Kumar which was released earlier this year was a testament to Lord Himesh's mass appeal. The audience could sniff out the self-awareness in the otherwise over-the-top chaos that the movie was. FOMO The Cap Mania tour's virality on social media has given everyone who couldn't be there in Mumbai the FOMO (fear of missing out) of a lifetime. During his nearly 3-hour-long performance, Reshammiya hit back at his critics, asking the attendees whether they wanted him to sing in his regular voice or nasal tune. 'Thoda regular gau yaa naak se? (Should I sing in a regular style or nasally?)." The crowd collectively went 'naak". Himesh Reshammiya addressed his critics during a recent concert in Mumbai, playfully responding to those who label his singing style as nasal. Engaging with the audience, he asked whether they preferred his signature nasal tone or a more conventional singing voice. KFCC signals readiness for talks with Kamal

Bengaluru, June 5 (UNI) Amid mounting tensions over Kamal Haasan's controversial remarks on the Kannada language, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) on Thursday expressed willingness to hold dialogue with the veteran actor to resolve the row and facilitate the release of his upcoming film 'Thug Life' in the state. The controversy erupted following Haasan's comments at the audio launch of 'Thug Life', where he linked the roots of Kannada to Tamil. Several Kannada groups and the KFCC demanded a public apology, sparking protests and threats of disruption to the film's Karnataka release. The matter soon reached the courts. In a recent hearing, the judge observed that Haasan's statements had stirred cultural sensitivities and questioned the basis of his linguistic claim. While acknowledging the ₹300-crore scale of the film, the court opined that an apology could help defuse tensions. Kamal Haasan, however, submitted a clarification stating his remarks were misinterpreted and not intended to undermine Kannada, but stopped short of an apology. The court, noting the absence of a formal apology and the prevailing unrest, stayed the film's release in Karnataka and adjourned the matter to June 10, allowing Haasan's legal team to seek rescheduling. In a significant development, KFCC president Narasimmalu said the chamber remained open to peaceful discussions with Haasan. 'We acknowledge Kamal Haasan's contribution to Indian cinema and his considerable fanbase in Karnataka. We are keen to resolve the issue amicably and ensure 'Thug Life' releases smoothly,' he stated. While protests continue in parts of the state, the KFCC's gesture has sparked hopes of a truce. All eyes are now on the June 10 court proceedings and any further engagement between Haasan and Kannada film bodies.

Rana Daggubati weighs in on Kamal Haasan's Kannada language controversy

Actor Rana Daggubati has commented on the backlash surrounding Kamal Haasan's recent remarks on the Kannada language, which stirred controversy ahead of the release of Thug Life. In an interview with India Today, Rana addressed the growing tendency for outrage on digital platforms. 'Social media has become a place to make an opinion. Earlier, you didn't have that. Anything gets touchy and political quite quickly,' he said. Kamal Haasan faced sharp criticism after he stated at the Thug Life audio launch that Kannada 'was born out of Tamil.' The remark, intended to emphasise cultural unity, sparked outrage among pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka, with some calling for a ban on the film. A formal complaint was also filed against the actor. When asked how actors should navigate such situations, Rana emphasised the need to shift societal expectations. 'If the media and the news, and people become smarter (and understand) that actors are not the ones to advocate for the way society lives, it will be a better place,' he said. 'I think you should look at scholars, politicians and learned men and women to lead a way into society.' He also highlighted the misplaced attention on celebrities over more meaningful contributors to culture. 'You'll never bring a poet to the same stage... If the lens turns towards more important and current things, the country would become a much better place.' Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has issued a clarification letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, stating his comments were misinterpreted and made 'out of genuine affection' for the Rajkumar family, adding, 'There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of Kannada language.'
