How can Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr qualify for AFC Champions League Elite 2025-26?

The Hindu26-05-2025

Cristiano Ronaldo will seek to end the season on a high when his side Al Nassr, faces Al Fateh at the Prince Abdullah bin Jalawi Stadium on Monday.
Earlier in the day, the Saudi Arabia Football Federation announced that Al-Nassr won an appeal to be handed three points, which puts qualification for the Asian Champions League within reach.
Al-Nassr lost 2-1 to Al-Orubah in March but complained that goalkeeper Rafi Al-Ruwaili was ineligible to play in the game because he was not a full-time professional. The Saudi Federation ruled in favour of Al-Nassr in a decision that also ensures Al-Orubah will be relegated.
How can Al Nassr qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite 2025-26?
After receiving the three points, Al Nassr is currently third in the Saudi Pro League standings with 70 points from 33 games, heading into the final matchday.
As per the 2025-26 slot allocation for the AFC competitions, three teams from the Saudi Pro League can book a spot in the AFC Champions League Elite. These are the league's top two teams and Al-Ahli, which has won the 2024-25 edition of Asia's premier continental tournament.
This means that Al Nassr will have to win its game against Al Fateh and hope that second-placed Al Hilal loses to Al Qadisiyah in their fixture. Even if Al Hilal manages a draw, it will move to 73 points and can seal the second spot due to a superior goal difference.
If Al Nassr finished third it will enter the AFC Champions League Two.

Soccer-Fernandes rejects Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United

June 3 - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al-Hilal's president. "There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. "It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision." The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time. However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

‘Bruno Fernandes will always be a red': Fans react as Manchester United midfielder's exit rumours gain momentum

Fans of English football club Manchester United are reeling from reports suggesting that club captain Bruno Fernandes could be sold during the upcoming transfer window. The Portuguese midfielder, who has been a central figure at Old Trafford since his arrival in January 2020, is reportedly being targeted by Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal with a potential bid exceeding £100 million. The speculation intensified after multiple outlets reported that United may consider letting Fernandes go if the offer proves financially irresistible. With the club facing pressure to revamp the squad and balance its books, Bruno's sale is seen by some as a strategic move, albeit a controversial one. Supporters took to social media to express their dismay and gratitude. 'If this is really the end, then I'm just sad we couldn't win more trophies with you. In good and in bad, you always were there when we needed you. Bruno Fernandes will always be a red,' wrote one fan. Another added, 'Bruno Fernandes. If this is goodbye, it has been the absolute finest of pleasures.' Since donning the red jersey, Bruno has consistently been the team's most productive attacking midfielder. In the Premier League alone, he has created 538 chances—the highest by any player since his debut. He's also scored 61 goals, placing him sixth on the list during that period, and has delivered 51 assists, ranking third. During his time at the club, Fernandes has won the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, while also finishing runner-up twice in the UEFA Europa League. Despite the silverware, many feel he deserved more, given his contributions and leadership. Both Fernandes and incoming manager Ruben Amorim have made it clear they are not looking for a departure. Amorim has referred to Fernandes as the 'most important player' in the current squad, while Bruno himself has stated that he has no intention of leaving unless the club makes that decision for financial reasons.
