‘The Six Billion Dollar Man' Review: Timely Documentary Shows Julian Assange As Truth Teller Fighting Against Authoritarian Drift
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been the focus of numerous documentaries: Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets explored the website Assange created that exposed U.S. war crimes in Iraq, an immense cache of U.S. diplomatic cables, and much more. Oscar winner Laura Poitras also took a crack at Assange and Wikileaks in her 2016 documentary Risk. Assange himself directed a documentary short, Collateral Murder, about the 2007 video Wikileaks released that showed a U.S. military helicopter crew opening fire on unarmed journalists and civilians in Iraq.
That may sound like sufficient coverage of Assange, but director Eugene Jarecki shows it's important to revisit him and the work of Wikileaks in light of rising authoritarianism in the U.S. and abroad. At a moment when democracy is in retreat (as author Anne Applebaum has put it), Jarecki's film The Six Billion Dollar Man raises the question of whether government by the people and for the people can function if citizens are denied information on what political leaders are doing in their name.

The $6B of the title refers to Jarecki's estimate of the amount of money the U.S. government has spent trying to prosecute Assange, going back to the Obama administration. He has faced a variety of charges including conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act for publishing classified information supplied to him by former U.S. Army Spec. Chelsea Manning, and computer hacking. To Jarecki, these all fall under the rubric of killing the messenger – going after Assange because he dared peel back the curtain on government secrets.
The Six Billion Dollar Man addresses many of the criticisms that have been leveled at Assange over the years – for instance, that his website recklessly released unredacted information, without considering possible harm to individuals named in documents. In the case of the U.S. diplomatic cables release, the documentary points out that Wikileaks worked carefully with the New York Times, Der Spiegel, and the Guardian to scrub the cables of information that would identify sources, but it was a Guardian editor who chose to publicly share the password to the full trove of unredacted cables.
The filmmaker also questions the prosecution of Assange in Sweden, where he was wanted for questioning after two women sought HIV tests after having sex with Assange. For political reasons, Jarecki asserts, prosecutors eventually bandied about the word 'rape' even though the women involved did not accuse Assange of sexual assault.
Jarecki interviews an Icelandic hacker nicknamed Siggi who joined Wikileaks as a volunteer when he was just a teenager. The film reveals Siggi, trying to save his own skin in a pedophilia investigation, agreed to the FBI's request to wear a wire in an attempt to ensnare Assange. But the recordings never found what FBI agents were hoping for – evidence of Assange encouraging people to illegally hack into government computer networks.
Jarecki hints that Assange can be his own worst enemy by displaying a mercurial temperament and superior attitude. One person close to Assange observes in the film, 'He can be arrogant, even cruel.'
But the documentary isn't putting Assange's personality on trial but questioning the lengths the U.S. government would go to shut him down. Ecuador, under then-president Rafael Correa, granted Assange's emergency request for asylum, allowing him to stay indefinitely in the Ecuadorian embassy in London where Assange sought refuge as U.K. authorities appeared set to extradite him to the U.S. But Pres. Correa's successor, immediately upon taking office, began to entertain offers of an aid package from the first Trump administration ('bribe,' if you prefer) to dislodge Assange from the embassy.
Jarecki also reveals that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a big Trump backer, had his fingerprints on surveillance equipment installed in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to monitor Assange and record his voice at all times.
The Six Billion Dollar Man is premiering in the Special Screenings section of Cannes. It serves as a companion piece, in a sense, to another film bowing at the festival: Raoul Peck's Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5. Both films cogently argue that ostensible democracies in the U.S. and elsewhere squash anyone who tries to tell the truth – anyone who insists that 2 + 2 = 4. Assange did the math, and paid the price.

'RHOBH' alum Tom Girardi sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for embezzling tens of millions of dollars
Tom Girardi, the famed personal injury attorney who was depicted in the Oscar-winning movie Erin Brockovich and is also the estranged husband of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne, has been sentenced to more than seven years behind bars for bilking his clients out of millions of dollars. The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Central District of California announced Tuesday that Girardi, who was disbarred in 2022, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for leading an embezzlement scheme that defrauded his clients of tens of millions of dollars, much of it meant for treatment for serious physical injuries. Girardi, 86, was also ordered to pay a $35,000 fine and more than $2 million in restitution, and to surrender to federal authorities by July 17. "This self-proclaimed 'champion of justice' was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of the millions of dollars," U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement. IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Tyler Hatcher added, "This sentencing brings a level of recompense for countless victims of Mr. Girardi's long-running scheme to enrich himself on the backs of clients who trusted him in some of their worst days." An attorney for Girardi didn't immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment. Girardi was indicted on charges of stealing more than $18 million from clients in 2023 and found guilty on four counts of wire fraud last August. The 13-day trial found that the disgraced attorney operated his firm, Girardi Keese, "like a Ponzi-scheme," federal prosecutors said, diverting millions won from settlements toward unrelated expenditures between 2010 and 2020. Families of victims of tragedies like a 2018 Lion Air plane crash, for example, were awarded millions in cases fought by Girardi and his co-conspirators, but said they never saw the Girardi Keese CFO Christopher Kazuo Kamon pleaded guilty two two counts of wire fraud in October, was sentenced to 121 months in custody, and was ordered to pay nearly $9 million in restitution. Another Girardi Keese lawyer and Girardi's son-in-law, David R. Lira, is expected to stand trial next month. Jayne filed for divorce from Girardi in 2020 and the couple remain legally separated, though their divorce has not been finalized. Jayne was not implicated in last year's verdict against her ex, but federal prosecutors said during Girardi's trial that among the misappropriated funds, $25 million went to EJ Global, a company founded by Jayne to finance her entertainment career. Girardi and Jayne were jointly hit by a lawsuit alleging embezzlement in 2020, but she was dismissed from the case in 2022. Though the law firm which brought the suit, Edelson PC, claimed at the time of Jayne's dismissal that it planned to refile, a new suit has yet to materialize. Hegseth orders renaming of ship named for gay rights icon Harvey Milk
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to rename the replenishment oiler Harvey Milk, a highly rare move that will strip the ship of the moniker of a slain gay rights activist who served as a sailor during the Korean War. U.S. officials say Navy Secretary John Phelan put together a small team to rename the replenishment oiler and that a new name is expected this month. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said the next name had not yet been chosen. The change was laid out in an internal memo that officials said defended the action as a move to align with President Donald Trump and Hegseth's objectives to 're-establish the warrior culture.' Navy launches ship named for gay rights leader Harvey Milk It marks the latest move by Hegseth and the wider Trump administration to purge all programs, policies, books and social media mentions of references to diversity, equity and inclusion. And it comes during Pride Month — the same timing as the Pentagon's campaign to force transgender troops out of the U.S. military. 'Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all DOD installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief's priorities, our nation's history, and the warrior ethos,' Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement on the renaming. 'Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete.' The decision was first reported by Phelan's office did not respond to a request for comment. The oiler Harvey Milk was named in 2016 by then-Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who said at the time that the John Lewis-class of oilers would be named after leaders who fought for civil and human rights. Milk, who was portrayed by Sean Penn in an Oscar-winning 2008 movie, served for four years in the Navy before he was forced out for being gay. He later became one of the first openly gay candidates elected to public office. Milk served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and had sponsored a bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing and employment. It passed, and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone signed it into law. On Nov. 27, 1978, Milk and Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, a disgruntled former city supervisor who cast the sole vote against Milk's bill. The ship was christened in 2021, and during the ceremony, then-Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said he wanted to be at the event 'not just to amend the wrongs of the past, but to give inspiration to all of our LGBTQ community leaders who served in the Navy, in uniform today and in the civilian workforce as well, too, and to tell them that we're committed to them in the future.' The ship is operated by Military Sealift Command with a crew of about 125 civilian mariners. The Navy says it conducted its first resupply mission at sea in fall 2024 while operating in the Virginia Capes. It continued to resupply Navy ships at sea off the East Coast until it began scheduled maintenance at Alabama Shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, earlier this year. While the renaming is rare, the Biden administration also changed the names of two Navy ships in 2023 as part of the effort to remove Confederate names from U.S. military installations. The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville — named for the Civil War battle — was renamed the Robert Smalls after a sailor and former enslaved person. And the Maury, an oceanographic survey ship originally named after a Confederate sailor, was renamed the Marie Tharp after a geologist and oceanographic cartographer who created the first scientific maps of the Atlantic Ocean floor. Maritime lore hints as to why renaming ships is so unusual, suggesting that changing a name is bad luck and tempts retribution from the sea gods.
