The knighthood will make Beckham 'Sir David' while his wife since 1999, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, will become 'Lady Beckham.' In 2003, Beckham was awarded the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, for services to soccer. Victoria Beckham got the same honor for services to the fashion industry in a later New Year Honours list.

Honors are awarded twice a year, once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. They are mostly made on the recommendation of the government, though the monarch has input too.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office would not confirm the press reports, as is custom. Buckingham Palace declined to comment. The Associated Press has not been able to independently confirm the award of the knighthood, which was first reported in The Sun tabloid newspaper.

In video footage published by The Sun from the Chelsea Flower Show earlier this month, the king is seen asking Beckham if he 'received his 50th birthday present.' The King appeared to say 'I'm glad it got to you,' with Beckham responding: 'It was incredible, thank you, it was very kind.'

His career wasn't always a high, though. After the 1998 World Cup in France, Beckham was widely vilified for his petulant kick of Argentina player Diego Simeone, which saw him sent off. Many fans blamed him for England's exit.

New international soccer tournament coming to Toronto ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup
Four countries are bringing their national soccer teams to Toronto this weekend for the final major tournament the city will host before it takes on several World Cup games next year. The Canadian Shield Tournament kicks off at BMO Field on Saturday and features four national men's soccer teams — Canada, Ukraine, New Zealand and Ivory Coast. The tournament is meant to prepare the teams for next year's FIFA World Cup, according to Canada Soccer. Canada's head coach Jesse Marsch said his team is excited for the challenge that comes with taking on these strong opponents. "It's a chance for all of us to competitively make sure that our teams are making steps forward and it will be, I think, a great experience for the fans [in] anticipation of what the World Cup will be next summer," Marsch said at a news conference on Friday. Canada's team is also set to receive a new addition, as Toronto FC's captain Jonathan Osorio will be joining their roster, according to a Canada Soccer news release Thursday. The inaugural match takes place Saturday at 3:30 p.m., with Canada facing off against Ukraine. The second match of the day will be played between New Zealand and Ivory Coast. The rest of the matches will take place on Tuesday. "We are fixed now on the very difficult match we have tomorrow, but looking ahead to Tuesday, we know that we will need to use a real breadth of our squad for both matches because both will be physically demanding and also tactically demanding," Marsch said. The tournament is a chance for soccer fans to watch some of the best players from around the world battle it out, but it's also an opportunity for the city to show its ability to run a major tournament — and manage any potential challenges that may come with it — before hosting six World Cup games next year. World Cup renos underway at BMO Field Fans attending this weekend's matches will get an early look at the almost $150-million upgrade BMO Field is set to receive ahead of the World Cup. Upgrades are already underway, and will ultimately include new video boards, luxury boxes and a rooftop patio. Temporary seating is also being added, increasing the stadium's capacity from close to 30,000 to 45,000, and bringing it up to FIFA World Cup standards. The current phase of renovations ends in August, with the second phase beginning in December and ending ahead of the first World Cup match next June. The city, which owns the field, and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which manages it, are spending $123 million and $23 million respectively on the renovations. Ford says province, city will discuss funding dispute In 2022, FIFA awarded Toronto the right to host five first round games plus one playoff round match for the 2026 tournament. However, the city originally anticipated it would host just five World Cup matches, at an estimated cost of $300 million. The cost has since climbed to $380 million, about $200 million of which is being provided by the federal and provincial governments. Now the city is clamping down on FIFA spending unless it can find savings on its hosting duties or secure more money from other levels of government. WATCH | City, province in funding dispute as Toronto preps for 2026 World Cup: Toronto in funding dispute with Ontario over 2026 FIFA World Cup 16 days ago Duration 2:09 Toronto is set to host 2026 FIFA World Cup matches in just over a year but Mayor Olivia Chow says the city is facing a nearly $40 million shortfall in funding. CBC's Lane Harrison breaks down the funding issues between the city of Toronto and the province. Last month, city councillors said they will hold off on major procurements or any large contracts that would push the cost over $340 million. Mayor Olivia Chow has said that's meant to address a $40-million shortfall created because a substantial amount of funding pledged by the province will be used up for various services, not all of which the city needs. The provincial government has said its total investment of $97 million remains unchanged, but Premier Doug Ford said Friday that the province will sit down with the city to discuss what can be done.

Cynthia Erivo's new album makes her feel "totally naked"
Cynthia Erivo is feeling vulnerable. She's a musical theatre veteran and the star of last year's film adaptation of Wicked, but putting out her album I Forgive You feels completely different. "Whilst it is scary, I think that's also the most exciting thing," Erivo tells Q 's Tom Power. "I get to give people a part of myself that I haven't really given before.… This feels totally naked." WATCH | Cynthia Erivo's full interview with Tom Power: From mourning a bitter break up in her single Worst Of Me, to acknowledging her abandonment issues in her song Replay, Erivo's 20 track album I Forgive You is filled with reflections on her life's traumas. One of her biggest epiphanies is that she needs to heal from the pain of her fractured relationship with her father. Erivo says her desire for his approval was causing her to overwork herself. "After that split [from my father], it starts to become about, 'I wanna prove to you that I am lovable,'" Erivo says. "And that's when it started becoming like, 'I'm going to do well every single time, because you're going to realize that you've lost something.'... This last couple of years has definitely been about letting [my younger self] let go of that kind of anger." WATCH | Official visualizer for Replay: I Forgive You is a pop record, but Cynthia Erivo's background as a strong soprano still comes through. In addition to starring in the hit movie Wicked opposite Ariana Grande, she also spent a decade performing in London's West End and on Broadway. "I did a tour of Sister Act in the UK…. That changed everything." says Erivo. "Then The Color Purple happened.… I remember being in the room and singing with the [musical director], and by the end, they were in tears.… Then whilst we were doing the show in London, I get called into the office, and they're like, 'Hey, [The Color Purple] is going to Broadway. We're gonna take you with it.' That changed my life.… And it just keeps going on." Even though she has a top notch musical theatre resume, Erivo says that she went through the same audition process for Wicked as everyone else. She had meetings with director Jon M. Chu, then a long audition day with acting out scenes, performing songs, and trying chemistry tests with other actors. It was an intense process — especially because she was also juggling other high-stakes jobs around the same time. "[The audition] was the day after I'd sung at the [Walt Disney Concert] Hall with the L.A. Philharmonic," Erivo explains. "It was like this weird juxtaposition of things happening at the same time. So, 'Go and do this giant gig, this giant moment with the Philharmonic… and then come in the next day, and be ready to be Elphaba'.… And then I was in London shooting [ Luther: The Fallen Sun ] with Idris Elba. Again, very wild for me." Cynthia Erivo's life runs at a non-stop pace, and she can barely take in all her success. Like her character Elphaba in Wicked, she always felt different than everyone else — to this day, she still feels like she doesn't fit in. It's hard for her to wrap her head around being popular. "My life has been like a constant sort of ticking over of things that keep surprising me," Erivo says. "I'm endlessly grateful for the fact that life keeps bringing me wonderful surprises. I just have to be open to it, really." The full interview with Cynthia Erivo is
