Urbanisation going through the roof? PWD road imperils Teen Mohre Gate
Bhopal: The historic Teen Mohre Gate in Bhopal, constructed in the 19th century, is encountering new problems despite undergoing restoration in 2018.
The public works department's newly constructed concrete road presents additional concerns.
The elevation of the new road has increased risks to the structure, as vehicles passing through might damage the gate's sensitive ceiling.
"The height of the gate is approximately 13 feet. However, due to the construction of cemented road, the new road the head room has decreased about 3.6 feet. Once regular traffic resumes, large trucks will be unable to traverse the road and any additional load on a bus or similar vehicle will strike the heritage gate.
Over the years, road reconstruction already resulted in reduction of vertical distance by around 1.5 feet," said heritage conservationist, SM Husain.
There is still an opportunity for corrections to be made, he added.
The sandstone structure, previously a part of the historic Taj Mahal Palace complex, underwent restoration utilising traditional methods to maintain its authenticity.
Conservation experts have cautioned against using cement-based materials, stressing the importance of appropriate restoration techniques.
Husain has advocated for these gates' preservation for years. At the beginning of the 2000s, driven by his commitment to heritage preservation, he personally initiated a minor restoration of the substantial walled bricks that endangered the structure's stability.
His notable achievement included restoring the ceiling by collaborating with Rajasthani craftsmen who specialised in traditional restoration techniques.
However, with urbanization pushing forward, the unintended consequences of infrastructure expansion are now threatening to undo past preservation efforts. Nadra Bus Stand, a major transit hub in the city, sees constant movement of buses and heavy vehicles passing through the archway.
While the new road was built to facilitate smoother traffic flow, the heightened surface has caused vehicles to bump against the monument's ceiling, intensifying structural strain.
Conservationists are urging authorities to reassess the project and find solutions that balance development with heritage preservation. They emphasize the need for engineering modifications that can reduce impact without compromising connectivity.
As modern construction reshapes urban landscapes, the fate of Teen Mohre Gate serves as a reminder that historical landmarks must not be sidelined in the race for progress, conservations said.
Whether corrective action will be taken to safeguard this architectural legacy remains to be seen, but time is running out, said a urban development consultant seeking anonymity. PWD, when contacted, did not respond.

Aishbagh ROB under the scanner over faulty design & safety issues
Bhopal: As the 'peculiar' design of the newly-constructed Aishbagh railway overbridge (ROB) becomes the talk of the town in Bhopal, many experts have no qualms in describing it as a 'faulty design'. The political leadership of the state has also taken cognisance of the matter. Minister in the Mohan Yadav govt from Bhopal city, Vishwas Sarang, is scheduled to visit the site of the overbridge on June 14 for an inspection to see what corrections are required to make the overbridge convenient for riders. The overbridge is not open for traffic yet, and removing the 'design defects' before the formal inauguration of the overbridge appears to be the best course of action. Design defects were detected on the Ganesh Mandir-Gayatri Mandir flyover (GG flyover) after it was recently inaugurated by chief minister Mohan Yadav. Following media reports on the issue, backed by the opinion of experts in structural engineering, some engineers involved in the project were placed under suspension. "The turn in the middle of the overbridge at the right angle is an issue. Sarang has taken up the issue with engineers involved in the project, and corrections as required would be made in the design," said PRO to Sarang, Mukesh Lodhi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He further stated that the minister would visit the site on June 14 for an inspection. Retired Chief Engineer, PWD, V K Amar, while talking to TOI, said, "The design of the overbridge is glaringly faulty. Whenever there is a turn on an overbridge, you give a curve to alert the driver about the turn ahead, but here, you have a turn at the right angle without any curve, and any driver would be taken by surprise at the turn, making it an accident-prone area. The design will have to be altered by giving a curve 100 metres ahead of the actual turn so that a driver is ready for the turn as it arrives. " The overbridge, costing Rs 18 crore, was completed after an eight-year delay and features an alarming right-angled curve at its highest point. Residents have expressed safety concerns, whilst experts have questioned the engineering decisions made by the PWD department. "Residents waited 10 years for this bridge. Instead of relief upon its completion, the community raised significant safety issues. The primary concern centres on the sharp 90-degree turn at the bridge's peak, which vehicles must traverse, posing considerable risks," said Aslam, a resident of the Aishbagh locality. Railway authorities clarified their role in the project. "We are responsible for the bridges built over the railway tracks. The approach roads of the bridge were built by PWD," says Nawal Kishore, PRO of Bhopal Railway Division. An engineer involved with the project sought to justify what he called the 'distinctive design' of the bridge. Talking to TOI on the condition of anonymity, he pointed to limited available space and the adjacent metro rail station as key constraints during construction. In response to the concerns, the PWD officials said that an inspection team evaluated the situation and will submit its assessment report. ACS (PWD), Neeraj Mandoli, did not reply to the calls and texts sent to him. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Sharp right! 90-degree turn on Bhopal railway overbridge leaves motorists fuming, minister to inspect on June 14
Image Credit: A Moeed Faruqui/ TNN BHOPAL: The design of the newly constructed Aishbagh railway overbridge in Bhopal has come under scrutiny, with experts raising concerns and state minister Vishwas Sarang set to visit the site on 14 June for inspection. The overbridge is not yet open to traffic. Officials are considering correcting the identified issues before its formal inauguration. Similar concerns had earlier been raised about the Ganesh Mandir–Gayatri Mandir flyover, which was inaugurated by chief minister Mohan Yadav. Following media reports and expert inputs, some engineers involved in that project were suspended. 'The turn in the middle of the overbridge at the right angle is an issue. Bhaiya (Sarang) has taken up the issue with engineers involved in the project and correction as required would be made in the design,' said Mukesh Lodhi, PRO to Sarang. He confirmed the minister's scheduled visit. Retired chief engineer, PWD, V K Amar, told TOI , 'Design of the overbridge is glaringly faulty. Bhopal bridge with 90-degree turn stumps people, officials defend design
A newly constructed railway overbridge (RoB) near Aishbagh Stadium in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh has become the center of controversy even before its official inauguration. The 648-meter-long and 8.5-meter-wide bridge, built at a cost of Rs18 crore, features a sharp 90-degree turn that has raised alarm among local residents and social media users, who fear it could become a hotspot for at easing traffic congestion and eliminating long waits at the Aishbagh railway crossing, the RoB is intended to facilitate movement between Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, the station area, and New to the state government, the bridge construction, which began in March 2023, will benefit nearly three lakh people daily by reducing commute times and traffic bottlenecks. However, its peculiar design has sparked a wave of criticism. The tight 90-degree turn at one end of the bridge is being widely debated online, with many questioning the logic behind such an engineering social media platform X, Manish Chaudhary commented, 'This is Bhopal's Aishbagh Rail Overbridge — which PWD took 10 years to complete, as if it's some kind of 'engineering miracle'. When power is in the hands of corrupt governments, when plans are made by incompetent planners who are confined to books, and when engineers earn degrees not by merit but by donation, you get disasters instead of bridges. The 90-degree turn is an invitation for accidents.' advertisement Another user, Mukesh, wrote, 'Death will arrive at a 90-degree angle. This is the angle of development that has emerged in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Rs 18 crore has been spent on the bridge.'Officials involved in the project, however, have defended the design, citing logistical constraints. Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (Bridge Department), VD Verma, explained to the news agency PTI, 'Due to the metro station, there is limited availability of land at the point. Due to the lack of land, there was no other option. The purpose of the RoB is to connect the two colonies."He also noted that only small vehicles will be permitted to use the overbridge, and that operations will follow safety protocols and vehicle speed regulations as per the Indian Road Congress. 'It will be operated with full safety,' he Minister Rakesh Singh, when asked about the issue, remarked, 'After a bridge is built, experts suddenly appear and say such things. A lot of technical aspects are taken into consideration while building any bridge. If this is an allegation, it will be investigated.'The RoB was long demanded after the closure of the Aishbagh railway crossing, which had caused considerable inconvenience to daily PTI inputs IN THIS STORY#Bhopal#Madhya Pradesh
