Lyman Hall students, staff open thrift store within high school

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A thrift store recently opened in Wallingford, but it's not where you might think. It's located at Lyman Hall High School.
'It feels like a normal store,' Kayla Casorla, a senior at Lyman Hall High School, said. 'If you were shopping, but you don't have to pay anything.'
The store is nestled inside the school's library. It's stocked with pants, tops, coats, shoes and all sorts of accessories.

'I'll pop in and say, those are some really cute jeans!' Bella Ruisanchez, a junior at Lyman Hall High School, said.
The Top Drawer Thrift Store opened in October and, so far, more than 400 students have made their way through the space.
'It's way more than I could have imagined,' Kristina Jensen, a social worker at the school, said.
The idea came from Jensen. She took inspiration from Branford, where she has a student in the district.
Lee Panagoulias, principal of Branford High School, told News 8 the school launched a thrift store in December 2023. He said it's set up like a regular storefront and its run by students, teachers and their student support team. Since it opened, they've helped hundreds of students.
'Last spring, we started reaching out to staff here in the building to say we got the funding for this, we're going to start taking donations, and the staff were on board right away,' Jensen said. 'We have a 10 item per month limit, but that really is flexible, knowing kids come and go and we have some kids come in and take things for family members. We'll have staff members from other buildings reach out.'
The hope is to provide resources to students in need and show students the impact of reusing clothing — and reducing waste.

'I've been doing this for 25 years, so having some new come in that I can be excited about and be inspired by is really awesome,' Jenn Castelli, an English teacher at Lyman Hall High School, said. 'The kids that come in are so grateful.'
Castelli helps out at the store and volunteers her time.
'It's a small thing I think we can do that makes a big difference,' she added. 'Isn't that kind of the point?'
The support has been overwhelming with many stepping up to help and donate.
'The staff that are involved, Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Castelli, are just unbelievable people,' Joseph Corso, principal of Lyman Hall High School, said. 'I just said yes.'
They don't need donations at this time, but the school will let the community know once that changes.

North missed £140bn of transport investment over last government, research finds

The North of England would have received an extra £140 billion in transport investment under the previous government if funding levels had been the same as in London, research has claimed. Independent analysis by think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) looked at Treasury figures between 2009/10 and 2022/23, during which time the Conservatives were in power. It reached the figure, which it said was enough to build seven Elizabeth Lines, by considering the amount of spending per person across the different English regions over that period. While England as a whole saw £592 spent per person each year, London received double that amount with £1,183 spent per person, the IPPR said. The entire North region saw £486 spent per person, with the North East and North West seeing £430 and £540 spent per person respectively. This amounted to £140 billion of missed investment for the North, more than the entire £83 billion estimate of capital spending on transport in the region since 1999/2000, according to the analysis. The region with the lowest amount of investment over the period was the East Midlands with just £355 spent per person. Among the most divisive transport investment projects for the previous government was the HS2 rail project, which was axed north of Birmingham in October 2023. Then-prime minister Rishi Sunak pledged to 'reinvest every single penny, £36 billion, in hundreds of new transport projects in the North and the Midlands', including improvements to road, rail and bus schemes. Earlier this week, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a £15.6 billion package for mayoral authorities to use on public transport projects across the North and Midlands ahead of the spending review. It is expected to include funding to extend the metros in Tyne and Wear, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, along with a renewed tram network in South Yorkshire and a new mass transit system in West Yorkshire. Marcus Johns, senior research fellow at IPPR North, said: 'Today's figures are concrete proof that promises made to the North over the last decade were hollow. It was a decade of deceit. 'We are 124 years on from the end of Queen Victoria's reign, yet the North is still running on infrastructure built during her rein – while our transport chasm widens. 'This isn't London bashing – Londoners absolutely deserve investment. But £1,182 per person for London and £486 for northerners? The numbers don't lie – this isn't right. 'This Government have begun to restore fairness with their big bet on transport cash for city leaders. 'They should continue on this journey to close this investment gap in the upcoming spending review and decades ahead.' Former Treasury minister Lord Jim O'Neill said: 'Good governance requires the guts to take a long-term approach, not just quick fixes. So the Chancellor is right in her focus on the UK's long-standing supply-side weaknesses – namely our woeful productivity and weak private and public investment. 'Backing major infrastructure is the right call, and this spending review is the right time for the Chancellor to place a big bet on northern growth and begin to close this investment chasm. 'But it's going to take more than commitments alone – she'll need to set out a transparent framework for delivery.'

Satellite Images Show Giant Port Emerge at World's Biggest Construction Site

Satellite imagery showed advances in construction of Oxagon, a floating industrial complex that is a key component of Saudi Arabia's Neom, currently the world's largest construction site. Newsweek has contacted Neom for comment. The new port city has a strategic location in one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Neom is the flagship element of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 aimed at diversifying its economy away from oil dependence. Oxagon, The Line and the Trojena Ski resort are among its most ambitious pieces. Neom has recently announced several progress reports, with a new CEO now in charge of resolving the project's budget overruns and delays amid multiple simultaneous, ambitious, and costly projects. Images captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites showed rapid progress made on Oxagon city and port, set to become one of the world's most advanced port terminals, the facility lies on the Red Sea in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The Port of NEOM has received Saudi Arabia's first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes, marking a key step in boosting Red Sea trade, automation, and tech-driven job creation, the company announced this week on LinkedIn. The Red Sea corridor is a major shipping route linking Asia via the Indian Ocean, to Europe and Africa via the Suez Canal. Oxagon's proximity to the canal, which facilitates almost 12% of global trade, provides it with a strategic edge, according to Blackridge Research & Consulting, an Indian-based specialized market research firm. The port is part of an envisioned cutting-edge industrial city which will fully rely on renewable energy and aims to host some 90,000 inhabitants by 2030, according to the government's vision. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had announced the establishment of Oxagon in 2021. "It will contribute to Saudi Arabia's regional trade and commerce, and support creating a new focal point for global trade flows," Al-Arabiya's English website quoted him as saying. Neom's Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) is developing the world's largest green hydrogen facility-a $8.4 billion project- at Oxagon. Melissa Blake, Port Director at Neom wrote on Linkedin: "Port of Neom is excited to receive the first batch of cranes and other cargo handling equipment as we come another step closer to delivering our vision." Saudi Arabia's Government Vision 2030's website: "Sitting at the crossroads of 3 continents, Oxagon is a place where people, nature and technology come together in harmony." Vishal Wanchoo, CEO of Oxagon said in May: "Industrial development cannot continue at the expense of people or the environment. We're offering a compact, mixed-use city where industry, nature, and community coexist." The port is planned to act as the main trade gateway to northwestern Saudi Arabia, with a smart logistics hub, connects Asia, Europe, and Africa.
