A quantum computing startup has announced plans to develop a utility-scale quantum computer with more than 1,000 logical qubits by 2031.
Nord Quantique has set an ambitious target which, if achieved, could signal a seismic shift in high-performance computing (HPC).
The company claims its machines are smaller and would offer far greater efficiency in both speed and energy consumption, thereby making traditional HPC systems obsolete.
Nord Quantique uses 'multimode encoding' via a technique known as the Tesseract code, and this allows each physical cavity in the system to represent more than one quantum mode, effectively increasing redundancy and resilience without adding complexity or size.
'Multimode encoding allows us to build quantum computers with excellent error correction capabilities, but without the impediment of all those physical qubits,' explained Julien Camirand Lemyre, CEO of Nord Quantique.
'Beyond their smaller and more practical size, our machines will also consume a fraction of the energy, which makes them appealing for instance to HPC centers where energy costs are top of mind.'
Nord's machines would occupy a mere 20 square meters, making them highly suitable for data center integration.
Compared to 1,000–20,000 m² needed by competing platforms, this portability further strengthens its case.
'These smaller systems are also simpler to develop to utility-scale due to their size and lower requirements for cryogenics and control electronics,' the company added.
The implication here is significant: better error correction without scaling physical infrastructure, a central bottleneck in the quantum race.
In a technical demonstration, Nord's system exhibited excellent stability over 32 error correction cycles with no measurable decay in quantum information.
'Their approach of encoding logical qubits in multimode Tesseract states is a very effective method of addressing error correction and I am impressed with these results,' said Yvonne Gao, Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore.
'They are an important step forward on the industry's journey toward utility-scale quantum computing.'
Such endorsements lend credibility, but independent validation and repeatability remain critical for long-term trust.
Nord Quantique claims its system could solve RSA-830, a representative cryptographic challenge, in just one hour using 120 kWh of energy at 1 MHz speed, slashing the energy need by 99%.
In contrast, traditional HPC systems would require approximately 280,000 kWh over nine days. Other quantum modalities, such as superconducting, photonic, cold atoms, and ion traps, fall short in either speed or efficiency.
For instance, cold atoms might consume only 20 kW, but solving the same problem would take six months.
That said, there remains a need for caution. Post-selection - used in Nord's error correction demonstrations, required discarding 12.6% of data per round. While this helped show stability, it introduces questions about real-world consistency.
In quantum computing, the leap from laboratory breakthrough to practical deployment can be vast; thus, the claims on energy reduction and system miniaturization, though striking, need independent real-world verification.

SpaceX launches Starlink satellite stack from Vandenberg Space Force Base (photos)

A Falcon 9 rocket launched SpaceX's Starlink 11-22 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base today at 7:40 p.m. EDT (2340 GMT; 4:40 p.m. local time in California). The stack of 27 Starlink satellites began their journey into low Earth orbit (LEO) aboard a Falcon 9 first-stage booster designated B1063. This was the 26th launch of B1063, which has now supported 18 Starlink missions. Booster 1063 missions Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich | DART | Transporter-7 | Iridium OneWeb | SDA-0B | NROL-113 | NROL-167 | NROL-149 | 17 Starlink missions The nine Merlin engines at the bottom of B1063 shut down approximately 2.5 minutes after liftoff, followed immediately by the separation of the booster from the Falcon 9's upper stage. About 8.5 minutes after liftoff, the B1063 landed safely on SpaceX's Of Course I Still Love You drone ship, stationed in the Pacific Ocean. Its successful landing inches it closer to SpaceX's record-holder B1067, which has flown a total of 28 launches. The rocket's upper stage continued toward LEO, ultimately deploying the 27 Starlink satellites there about one hour into flight. Each satellite will maneuver into more specific orbits within the Starlink's megaconstellation over the next few days. ‘It's A Rush. It's Traumatic.' Ballerina's Director Discusses The Surprise Reaction Ana De Armas Had The First Time She Set Someone On Fire With A Flamethrower

When you see a knife stabbing somebody, it's either rubber or plastic. Flamethrowers, on the other hand, are a whole different deal. While some productions opt for CGI, the truth is that there is a big on-screen difference between real fire and fire that's digitally created, and no genius has yet to invent fire that doesn't hurt/burn. The blaze-spurting weapons are serious business, which is why I am in no way surprised that Ana de Armas had a very emotional reaction using one during the making of Ballerina. As previewed in the trailers for the John Wick side-quel, there is an extended sequence in Ballerina where protagonist Eve Macarro straps on a flamethrower and goes on a mini rampage torching a bunch of dudes – and that's basically what de Armas had to do on set. The people that she was setting on fire were trained and experienced stunt performers who were prepared for said torching with extreme safety at front of mind, but even just practicing for the scene left the star in tears. Speaking about using the extreme weapon during a long lead press day earlier this spring, director Len Wiseman told me, They're scary in such a fun way... I tested it out and the amount of power that it feels behind it. And I remember, I tested it out before so I could tell Ana that it's safe and I've done it. And I got a report and the guys were testing with her when she actually had to actually test flaming somebody. And first attempt, she cried because it's horrifying, you know? Back in late March, I had the great pleasure of joining a small group of journalists for a special experience at 87Eleven headquarters in Los Angeles, and after a training session that saw us learn how to perform the moves in one of the key action sequences in Ballerina, I had the chance to speak with Wiseman about the process of making the film. Having personal experience being on a set where a flamethrower was used, I asked about the tension that the dangerous weapon can create. Wiseman explained that it was definitely a freaky experience for Ana de Armas to purposefully set a person on fire, but once she got past her first taste of it, her mood changed: And then after that, she was really down with it, really cool. She flamed, like, I don't even remember how many people. But imagine you're testing it out and flaming somebody and they're screaming in front of you and you're lighting them on fire. It's a rush. It's traumatic. If you're excited to witness Ana de Armas setting a whole bunch of people on fire, the best news I can offer you is that Ballerina is almost here. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast including Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, the late Lance Reddick, and John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, the new action film arrives in theaters everywhere on June 6.

The John Wick franchise became more than just a saga following Keanu Reeves' title assassin when it delivered the Peacock subscription-exclusive prequel series The Continental in 2023. Now we're about to enter spinoff territory again with the 2025 movie release of Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas in the lead role. This time though, Reeves gets to partake in this side quest as John Wick, although this didn't mark the first time he and de Armas met. A decade ago, the former showed the latter choreography from the first John Wick movie. Ana de Armas, who has previous action experience from No Time to Die, The Gray Man and Ghosted, reflected on that experience while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She and Keanu Reeves first worked together on Knock Knock, and after they made each other's acquaintance, he showed off some of the moves he'd done for John Wick, which hadn't been released yet. In de Armas' words: The first time we met, we were at lunch, and he told us the story about John Wick. Like, he had just wrapped the first John got up from the chair in the middle of the restaurant and started doing one of the choreos in front of everybody. I was like 'Well, he looks excited.' More Ballerina Stories Tom Cruise Has Seen Ballerina, And He Did Not Hold Back About Ana De Armas' New Movie I Wasn't Sure What To Expect From Ballerina Until I Saw Ana De Armas Break Some Plates With Another Woman's Face (And Talk About The Insane Stuntwork She Went Through) As well he should have been! While Keanu Reeves had no idea at the time that John Wick would spawn a popular franchise, the action choreography alone was enough to make it stand out from the crowd. So Ana de Armas and everyone else in that restaurant got a special tease for what was to come, and man, I wish I could've been there. When John Wick was released in October 2014, it was met with positive critical reception and made $86 million worldwide, somewhere around three-four times its budget. Chapter 2 was greenlit a few months later, and the rest is history. Now the time has come to spotlight Ana de Armas' Eve Macarro in Ballerina, as we'll see her training to exact revenge on the people who killed her father. That will include her clashing with John Wick, and de Armas went on to explain just how much these movies mean to Keanu Reeves, whom she's now worked with three times (they also co-starred in Exposed): These kinds of movies, I mean, this is his happy place. This is what he likes to do. He loves rehearsing, he loves martial so generous too when he goes to set, and he knows you're trying to figure it out. So, he gives you your time, and he just steps back, he's never imposing anything. And then when you're ready, he's like 'I'm coming for you.' Ballerina takes place between the events of the third and fourth John Wick movies. As such, we'll find Reeves' character after he was found by The Bowery King, but before he started carrying out his mission of vengeance against The High Table. Although John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development, if it doesn't get off the ground it's entirely possible Ballerina will be the last time we see him playing the character since Chapter 4 ended with him being presumed dead. But ultimately Ballerina is Ana de Armas' platform to shine on, and her other co-stars include Anjelica Huston, Ian McShane, the late Lance Reddick, Gabriel Byrne and Norman Reedus, among others. The action flick, which arrives in theaters on June 6, was directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten, and John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski oversaw the reshoots, although he'll go uncredited for that work.
