Media key in shaping perception of gov't initiatives
KUALA LUMPUR: Media practitioners serve as strategic partners to the government, playing a crucial role in building public understanding, fostering unity, and strengthening confidence in the MADANI Government's direction and policies, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa.
Speaking at the 2025 Semarak Aidilfitri Gathering with Media Partners here last night, Dr Zaliha emphasised that in an increasingly complex world with boundless information and competition in both the virtual and physical spheres, the role of the media had become even more significant.
'Every report, article, or broadcast across any platform shapes public perception of the policies and agendas we implement.
'Therefore, I see all of you not merely as third-party observers but as active contributors in shaping public understanding, nurturing unity, and reinforcing trust in the MADANI Government's vision and actions today,' she said.
Also present was Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.
Citing recent initiatives such as preserving Kuala Lumpur's heritage through Warisan KL, developing Labuan as a smart island, and enhancing Putrajaya as a smart city, Dr Zaliha stressed that public comprehension of these efforts depended largely on how the media framed and communicated them.
She acknowledged that in today's post-truth communication landscape, the government faced significant challenges, as misinformation and disinformation could distort narratives and create confusion among the public.
'For instance, in this era of artificial intelligence (AI), some have been swayed by narratives claiming the Malay community is being marginalised in urban redevelopment projects.
'I would like to stress that these redevelopment projects are in-situ. For instance, in Kampung Sungai Baru, nearly 70 per cent of the residents who agreed to the project are Malays, and they will be resettled on their own land,' she said.
Dr Zaliha also urged media professionals to collaborate in addressing legacy issues, including the development of Kampung Sungai Baru and the revitalisation of Pasar Datuk Keramat.

80,000 students participate in Cybersafe in schools programme
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra), in collaboration with CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM), today launched the CyberSAFE in Schools Programme as part of efforts to enhance digital safety awareness among students. The programme, officiated by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, targets the participation of more than 80,000 students aged between 10 and 17 from 500 schools, comprising 200 Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) and 300 Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) across nine states. Dr Zaliha said the programme was aimed at raising awareness and building students' resilience against cyber threats, including online grooming, cyberbullying, online sexual exploitation, the spread of fake news, and the irresponsible use of social media. 'This programme will be implemented over a period of 15 months, involving 500 schools across nine states. It is timely, as cyber threats are an issue that must be addressed from a young age. 'Children need to be taught about cyber security and the actions they can take to protect themselves,' she said after launching the programme at SJKT Thamboosamy Pillai here. Also present were MITRA Special Task Force Committee chairman P. Prabakaran, who is also the Batu MP and CSM chief executive officer Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab. The CyberSAFE in Schools programme, which began last month, is conducted interactively over two hours, covering topics such as safe internet usage, social media ethics, password management and the psychological impact of excessive screen time. The programme also emphasises guidance on identifying false information, in addition to channels for reporting cyber incidents and seeking support. Meanwhile, Amirudin said the programme offered students comprehensive exposure to various aspects of cybersecurity, with their understanding assessed indirectly through quizzes and questions posed by speakers. 'This approach is intended to help students become more aware, gain a deeper understanding, and apply cybersecurity knowledge in their daily lives,' he told Bernama. He added that three or four students from each school would also be appointed as CyberSAFE ambassadors, who would be trained to serve as agents of change and peer references on cybersecurity issues.

High-profile cases now wrapped up in six months
Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Azam said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. - Bernama pic BANGI: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has shortened the investigation period for high-profile cases from one and a half years to just six months, thanks to the implementation of new approaches, including upskilling officers and utilising the latest technology. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said one of the main factors that enabled the shorter investigation period was the improvement of investigation modules and systems by reviewing outdated elements in the commission's procedures. Advertisement 'In the past, one high-profile case could take us about one and a half years to complete the investigation papers, but now we can complete them within six months. Secondly, we enhance our officers' skills and knowledge. 'About 10 years ago, we needed to dispatch many officers to conduct surveillance. But now, we just use technology to locate suspects and witnesses. So, in a very short period, we can locate the suspect or the person we want to find,' he said. Azam said this at a press conference after attending the 2025 MACC-NTU International Law Enforcement Programme Convocation here today. In addition, Azam said the MACC has also established strategic collaborations with external parties to strengthen its investigation capabilities, especially in technical aspects and financial forensics. He said international cooperation also plays a vital role, particularly in tracing and recovering assets located abroad. 'We also collaborate with many parties. For example, our collaboration with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants helps us with asset tracing and forensic accounting,' he said. On the need to increase staffing, Azam said that although there was a rise in the number of reports from 2020 to April 2025, totalling 34,819, mass recruitment of MACC officers is not the primary solution to strengthening anti-corruption efforts. 'I do not see that adding a large number of MACC officers is the solution to combat corruption in this country. The most important thing is our approach,' he said, adding that during the same period, 5,145 investigation papers were opened, leading to the arrest of 5,703 individuals. He said that out of these arrests, 2,479 individuals were prosecuted and 1,274 were subsequently convicted in court. The MACC also recorded significant financial enforcement outcomes, including the seizure of RM3.54 billion in assets and the forfeiture of an additional RM27.87 billion. At today's convocation, 250 people graduated from the programme, and they have now been appointed as new MACC officers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
