BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Viljami Vartiainen scored 30 points and No. 9 seed Weber State beat No. 10 seed Sacramento State 83-70 on Saturday night in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
Weber State (12-21) faces top-seeded Northern Colorado (23-8) in the second round on Sunday.
Vartiainen had five rebounds for the Wildcats (12-21). Blaise Threatt added 26 points while shooting 10 for 18 to go with six rebounds and seven assists. Trevor Henning finished with eight points.
The Hornets (7-24, 0-1) were led in scoring by Jacob Holt, who scored all 20 of his points in the second half. EJ Neal added 18 points for Sacramento State. Bailey Nunn had nine points and five assists.
Weber State took the lead with 3:42 remaining in the first half and did not relinquish it. The score was 37-33 at halftime, with Vartiainen racking up 19 points.

On Sunday he was driving the team again, though it was initially a frustrating game as his chances were limited by Spain's hard-working defenders. Nuno Mendes fired Portugal level after Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring for Spain. Then Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead 2-1 at the break. But Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time to fire home the equalizer from Mendes' deflected cross in the 61st, setting off joyous scenes among his faithful fans. It was Ronaldo's 138th goal for Portugal. Nobody has ever scored more for their country. Ronaldo kept trying in what was his record-extending 221st appearance for the country, but eventually had to go off exhausted in the 88th to standing ovations from fans and a hug from coach Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo said he was carrying an injury into the game. 'I had already felt it during the warmup, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it,' Ronaldo said. 'It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all.' Ronaldo's future is uncertain as his contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr only runs to the end of June. He posted 'this chapter is over' on social media after the club's last Saudi Pro League game of the season. On Saturday he said he had all but decided not to go to the Club World Cup despite 'quite a few' offers from participating clubs to play there. Whatever club Ronaldo plays for, he will keep striving for Portugal. Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
Associated Press DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. With his first basket of Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night, Gilgeous-Alexander — the NBA's reigning MVP — reached the 3,000-point mark for the season, including playoffs. The milestone came on a 10-footer with 8:24 left in the opening quarter. He needed only two points to get there Sunday, after scoring 38 in Oklahoma City's Game 1 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. This is the 25th time in NBA history that a player has scored 3,000 points in a season. Michael Jordan did it 10 times, Wilt Chamberlain did it five and 10 other players — Bob McAdoo, Elgin Baylor, James Harden, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Luka Doncic, Rick Barry, Shaquille O'Neal and now Gilgeous-Alexander — have done it once. Gilgeous-Alexander also is the fourth player to score that many points while also handing out at least 600 assists in the same season.
