Mannapuram gold heist: Sambalpur police nets four more with 14 firearms

SAMBALPUR: In a major breakthrough in the daring Mannapuram Gold Finance heist, Sambalpur police arrested four more accused, taking the total number to eight.
The four nabbed with the help of the Delhi police were identified as Vikash Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar Paswan, both from Vaishali in Bihar. The other two Yash Anand and Piyush Raj are from Patna. All four are said to be close associates of the alleged mastermind Subodh Singh.
With the fresh arrests, police claimed they are now close to solving the entire case. Breifing the media on Friday evening, IG Northern Range, Himansu Lal said, the case is almost resolved and all the accused are now in police custody.
'The involvement of Subodh Singh and his gang has been clearly established following a thorough investigation. They have a very wide network across the country. The process of recovery of the gold will start soon,' Lal said.
Sambalpur SP Mukesh Bhamoo said, Subodh had entrusted Vikash to execute the loot in Sambalpur. Vikash and Piyush had earlier robbed 25 kg gold in Rajasthan and 17 kg in Madhya Pradesh. The planning, execution, logistics and disposal were all handled by different teams to mislead the police.
'We have cracked all parts of the operation except the disposal, but we've ascertained that the looted gold fetched a huge sum which was used to procure sophisticated firearms. We have recovered around 14 pistols from the possession of the accused. All four will be forwarded to court on Saturday as investigations continue,' Bhamoo said.
Last month, Subodh was brought on a seven-day remand. Despite being behind bars, he was allegedly orchestrating crimes across states through his active criminal network. His record includes at least 28 major crimes across Odisha, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, including gold heists, contract killings, and cases of extortion.
Other accused arrested in connection with the case include Uttam Paswan, believed to have coordinated the heist from Guwahati, and Pankaj Paswan and Ajaya Paswan from Hajipur. A country-made pistol and live ammunition were recovered from Pankaj's rented house in Sambalpur during his remand.
The robbery had taken place on January 3 at the Mannapuram Gold Finance office in Budharaja, Sambalpur. The total value of the stolen assets is estimated to be around Rs 20 crore.
Police said the final phase of investigation will focus on ascertaining the disposal route of the gold and its recovery.

Four promised jobs with LIC, duped of Rs 46.5 lakh in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The dream of a secure future turned into a costly nightmare for four temporary workers. They were duped out of Rs 46.5 lakh by a Paldi resident who had promised to get them permanent jobs at the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) office on Relief Road. In a complaint filed with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Sunday, Bipin Makwana, who works as a security guard outside the LIC office, named Chikesh Shah as the accused. The 57-year-old told police that he met Shah in 2023 at a nearby Jain temple. Over time, Shah gained Makwana's trust. He claimed to have strong connections and offered to get permanent jobs with the LIC for Makwana and his friends. On April 30, 2023, Makwana and his three friends met Shah at Sampurna Hall in Kankaria, where Shah reportedly explained the job offers and demanded money according to each person's post. The smallest amount was Rs 10,000, Makwana told police. The group started collecting money and, allegedly, made the first payment of Rs 5 lakh in cash on April 13, 2023. Over the next few months, they allegedly paid cash to Shah in instalments. In two more meetings held on Jan 2 and Feb 2, 2024, Shah promised the men that permanent orders would be issued soon. Later, Shah gave a notarised declaration on Nov 26, 2024, with a cheque and a written assurance that the work would be completed by Jan 31, 2025. However, no job order was issued. A case was registered with the DCB police station under IPC Sections 406 and 420 for breach of trust and cheating. The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) began an investigation into the case.

HC junks BRS MLA Kaushik Reddy's plea to quash extortion case

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Monday dismissed the quash plea filed by BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy in an alleged extortion case . Kaushik Reddy moved an anticipatory bail plea before the high court immediately after his quash plea was dismissed. The case was filed by the wife of a granite businessman, who alleged that citing public outcry over his granite quarries, the legislator had extorted Rs 25 lakh and was seeking Rs 50 lakh more. The prosecution placed evidence before the court about the threatening calls from the legislator to the businessman. Police produced witness statements of the drivers and others to prove their charge of extortion. Though the counsel for the legislator argued that he was calling the businessman to inform him about the grievance of the people, Justice K Lakshman sought to know if that was the job of a legislator. "He should have asked the relevant authorities to verify and act. Instead, he made direct calls to the businessman," the judge said while dismissing Kaushik Reddy's plea.
