Countdown to Kickoff: Khristian Boyd is the Saints Player of Day 97

USA Today7 days ago

Countdown to Kickoff: Khristian Boyd is the Saints Player of Day 97 Boyd could be a better fit in Brandon Staley's defense as he heads into Year 2.
There are only 97 days remaining until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 regular season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. Wearing No. 97 for the Saints this year is second-year defensive tackle Khristian Boyd, a Round 6 draft choice by the Saints in the 2024 draft. Here's some background on Boyd, our Saints Player of the Day.
Name (Age): Khristian Boyd (25)
Khristian Boyd (25) Hometown: Blue Springs, Mo.
Blue Springs, Mo. Position: Defensive tackle
Defensive tackle Height, weight: 6-foot-3, 320 pounds
6-foot-3, 320 pounds Relative Athletic Score: 4.63
4.63 College: Northern Iowa Panthers
Northern Iowa Panthers Drafted: Round 6, 199th overall in 2024
Round 6, 199th overall in 2024 NFL experience: 1 season
1 season 2025 salary cap hit: $1,004,707
Upon graduating Blue Springs High School in Missouri, Boyd would attend Northern Iowa University in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. He'd play in 49 games over his five seasons with the Panthers, redshirting in 2018 and Covid limiting his team to seven games in 2020. Over his collegiate career, Boyd collected 9 sacks and 24 tackles for loss. In 2022 he was 2nd Team all-conference, following that up with 1st Team all-conference honors in 2023 and a 3rd Team All-FCS selection.
Boyd appeared in just six games for the Saints as a rookie, playing only 20% (74) of the team's defensive snaps. He totaled 3 tackles for a defense that ranked 30th overall and 31st against the run. He's expected to be on the roster bubble this offseason, but a change in defensive scheme may fit perfectly into his best skills.
A natural nose tackle, Boyd may be a much better fit in new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley's 3-4 system. The Saints traded for Davon Godchaux this offseason, but the team only has Boyd and Godchaux as prototype nose tackles on the roster. Boyd plays with tremendous strength and good leverage, allowing him to stand his ground against double-team blocking and clog inside running lanes.
Khristian Boyd isn't a lock to make the roster out of training camp. However, his outstanding power and potential abilities as a run defender make him a possible Year 2 breakout player for a Saints squad desperate to upgrade their run defense.

NFL Pro Bowler shares devastating toll injuries took on career: 'Literally couldn't walk'

Terron Armstead called it a career after playing in the NFL for 12 years and earning four Pro Bowl selections between his time with the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins. The 33-year-old offensive lineman battled injuries toward the end of his career. He pointed to the pain as being one of the reasons why he decided to hang up his cleats. "I've been dealing with a knee since my third year in the league," he said in an appearance on the "Nightcap Show." "I didn't see a practice field at all, and not because I didn't want to or the Dolphins just wanted me to rest. It's like I literally couldn't walk. "After a game on Sunday, I wouldn't be able to walk on my own, under my own power, until Wednesday, Thursday. So I was only able to play under the pain meds. I couldn't put any pressure on my knee, so it was like, I can't keep doing that to myself." The Saints chose Armstead in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He played in six games in his rookie year before he earned his spot on the offensive line in 2014. He never appeared in all 16 or 17 games during an NFL season. He played the final three years with the Dolphins, and announced his retirement in April. "This was always more than a game to me! This has literally been my LIFE! I look back at my entire journey and I walk away grateful, proud, excited, and at peace, knowing I did it the right way!! Full investment to maximize the blessings God gave me!!" he wrote in part on X. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

New Orleans Saints Lead NFL in Cap Space Gained After June 1st Roster Moves

New Orleans Saints Lead NFL in Cap Space Gained After June 1st Roster Moves originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New Orleans Saints continue to get cap relief. The Saints are projected to earn the most cap relief thanks to June 1st designations, per Over The Cap. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (4) drops back to pass against the New York Giants during the first quarter at MetLife Stadium. Brad Penner-Imagn Images The big boost to the team's cap space is thanks to the retirements of All-Pro tackle Ryan Ramczyk and veteran quarterback Derek Carr. Carr's cap hit will drop from $20.46 million to either $13.458 million or $19.207 million pending the league's decision on the signing bonus Carr agreed to return. Advertisement Ramczyk's retirement is expected to return $1.25 million to the team with his dead money cap at $11.08 million. The Saints have remained disciplined during free agency and aren't expected to use their newly acquired money to make multiple big moves. New Orleans has been working towards getting cap-compliant for the 2026 offseason and will likely use their estimated $30 million in cap space to roll over in 2026. Despite the team's discipline in spending, there are multiple holes in the roster and the Saints could look to address their depth. The biggest name associated with New Orleans is free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. who the team brought in for a visit in May. Samuel Jr. is scheduled to get a check-up in July and after could be a coveted free agent that New Orleans could target. Advertisement The Saints are in the midst of a soft rebuild and having the money roll over for the 2026 offseason is important. If Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough end up being the team's quarterback of the future, having money to spend while their young quarterback is on a rookie contract will be pivotal to competing soon. New Orleans Saints Quarterback Competition Heats Up in Final Week of OTAs

New Orleans Saints Quarterback Competition Heats Up in Final Week of OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New Orleans Saints quarterback competition stays hot. The final practice open to the media for OTAs highlighted the intense battle between rookie quarterback Tyler Shough and second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler. New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough (6)Stephen Lew-Imagn Images On Thursday, the Saints' offense worked in the red zone. Spencer Rattler ended the day 6/8 passing with 3 touchdowns, while Shough finished 7/8 passing with one touchdown. Both players rotated working with the first and second teams. Advertisement The quarterback battle became public first during the open portion of the first week of OTAs when Shough and Rattler each had impressive showings. During 7-on-7 sessions, Rattler went a perfect 8/8 passing, while Shough followed up closely, going 7/8 with a deep 50+ yard bomb to Shaheed. The two young signal callers continued their impressive runs in 7-on-7 drills the following week. During the open portion of the Saints week two OTAs, Shough went 9/12 with 2 touchdowns and an interception. The rookie quarterback's touchdowns came excitingly, with both being 60+ yard deep passes. Rattler continues to be right on Shough's trail, however, going 10/12 passing. Shough finishes OTAs going 23/28 for 3 touchdowns and an interception while Rattler ends 24/28 passing with 3 touchdowns. Both players delivered impressive performances, continuing the tight battle for the starting quarterback. While head coach Kellen Moore said the team will maintain similar workouts during minicamp, the real battle will begin in training camp, when teams will be allowed contact drills. As training camp ramps up and bleeds into preseason, a starter will be named.
