Man in KLIA shooting seeks plea bargain over 2 charges

PETALING JAYA : The man charged with attempting to murder his wife and causing hurt to her bodyguard in last year's KLIA shooting is now seeking a plea bargain.
Deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin told the sessions court in Sepang that Hafizul Hawari's lawyers had asked to enter into a plea bargain for the two charges.
'Today was initially scheduled for trial. However, the prosecution was informed by the defence of their intention to enter a plea bargain. The prosecution will review the terms of matter,' she told judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.
The judge then set July 17 for the outcome of the negotiations.
During today's proceedings, the prosecution was led by Raja Zaizul Faridah and deputy public prosecutor Aqharie Durranie Aziz.
Hafizul, 39, was represented by lawyers Nik Faris Syazwan Zainuzzaman and Syafiq Lazim.
On April 25 last year, Hafizul was accused of attempting to murder his wife, Farah Isa, 37, at the arrival hall of KLIA Terminal 1 at around 1.09am on April 14.
He was also charged with causing grievous hurt to Nur Hadith Zaini, 37, at the same location and time.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
In the early morning incident, he allegedly fired two shots at his wife at the airport's arrival hall but missed. One of the shots hit her bodyguard, who required medical treatment.
In February, Hafizul was given six years in jail and six strokes of the rotan by the Kota Bharu sessions court after pleading guilty to seven charges, including the possession of an Austrian Glock 19 pistol-type firearm.
The other charges pertained to the possession of bullets without a licence and a plastic package containing ball-shaped firecrackers without a permit.
He was also charged with the possession of three identification cards belonging to individuals aged 29, 34 and 35.

In a statement today, the EAIC said its investigation also found that some importers and customs agents had made declarations without adhering to the provisions in the Customs Standing Orders. 'The EAIC received complaints against the customs department, alleging a failure to revoke the licences of importers and agents who violated the Customs Standing Orders. Investigations were conducted under Subsection 27(4) of the EAIC Act 2009,' the statement said. As a result, the EAIC has recommended improvements for the customs department to enhance oversight and ensure stricter compliance with the Customs Standing Orders by importers and customs agents. The commission also urged the customs department to take firm action against any party found to be in breach of these regulations.

However, the EAIC said in a statement today that investigations found that the loss of the items was not due to negligence by immigration officers. 'Nevertheless, there are several weaknesses in the management and handling of detainees' belongings that need to be rectified to prevent accusations or misunderstandings against officers on duty,' the statement said. Consequently, the EAIC has decided to recommend improvements to the immigration department to ensure the management and handling of detainees' belongings adhere to the existing operating procedures.

KTMB services disrupted by cable thefts yet again
The Northern Komuter and Electric Train Service (ETS) were delayed due to the cable thefts. PETALING JAYA : Cable theft involving the signalling and communication systems on three Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (KTMB) northern routes today caused disruption and train delays of more than 60 minutes for both the Northern Komuter and Electric Train Service (ETS). The affected locations were the Tapah Road-Sungkai (Km250.5) route with 200 metres of cable stolen, Kamunting-Bukit Merah-Bagan Serai (Km87.25) route with 110 metres stolen, and Simpang Ampat-Bukit Mertajam (Km15.5) route with 40 metres affected, Bernama reported. Trains were delayed by 80 to 115 minutes. The services affected were EP9172 (KL Sentral- Butterworth), EG9321 (Butterworth-Segamat), EX9107 (Butterworth-KL Sentral), EX9207 (Padang Besar-KL Sentral), and EG9420 (Segamat-Padang Besar). In addition, the Northern KTM Komuter service on the Ipoh-Butterworth-Ipoh route was delayed by 30 minutes. KTMB said early notifications of the disruptions were sent to passengers via SMS and KTMB's official social media platforms. KTMB chief operating officer Zain Mat Taha said 45 cases of cable theft have been recorded in the northern sector from January to May this year. KTMB has announced a plan to upgrade its signalling network at a cost of RM12.8 million annually over the next three years, with a focus on hotspot areas. They plan to install manhole covers with special locking mechanisms at 21 locations, introduce CCTV cameras and drones, and have anti-climb security fencing. KTMB auxiliary police, with the help of police, will intensify patrols in hotspot areas to curb theft. KTMB incurred losses of RM1.28 million last year and RM162,000 as of March this year from these cable thefts.
