Man arrested after suspected stabbing in Dublin hospitalises 3 people
A man has been arrested after three people were injured in a suspected knife attack that left a Dublin neighbourhood in 'a state of shock'.
The suspect was understood to be from a South American country and not an asylum seeker, Irish media reported.
Three men were injured in an apparent series of random attacks across several streets in the Stoneybatter area of the Irish capital on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 3pm. Residents were ordered to lock their doors and stay inside.
Two men had 'serious but not life-threatening' injuries, while the other man's injuries were described as 'less serious', Gardaí said.
A spokesman said: 'A man has been arrested and is currently detained at a Garda station in the North City under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
'Three males assaulted in the course of the incident have been taken to hospital for treatment, two males for serious but not life-threatening injuries, one male with less serious injuries.
'A number of scenes are currently being preserved for technical examination in the Stoneybatter area. All traffic restrictions have been lifted.
'Anyone who was in the Stoneybatter area between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, who may have any video footage linked to this incident, is asked to make this footage available to Gardaí'.
A heightened police presence and a number of crime scene cordons were in place until shortly before 5pm.
Ray McAdam, a Fine Gael councillor, said the alleged knife attack has sent shockwaves through the 'active' and 'closely-knit' community.
'There's a level of shock, a level of concern – but the overriding sense here in Stonybatter is one of hope that those who have been impacted and injured will make a swift recovery,' he said.
He added: 'There's a sense of 'how could something like this happen in our neighbourhood?''
Mary Lou McDonald, the leader of Sinn Fein, described the attack as 'terrible news'.
'My thoughts are with those injured and their families. The community is in a state of shock.'
In a statement, she added: 'The Gardaí and emergency services are to be commended for their response.'

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Miguel Uribe, a conservative Colombian presidential hopeful, was in critical condition on Monday after being shot in the head from close range during a rally at the weekend. The assassination attempt has stunned the nation, with many politicians describing it as the latest sign of how security has deteriorated in Colombia, where the government is struggling to control violence in rural and urban areas, despite a 2016 peace deal with the nation's largest rebel group. Reporter hit as LA officers fire rubber bullets at protesters
An Australian news correspondent was hit as Los Angeles police fired rubber bullets Sunday as tensions with immigration raid protesters escalated. 'After hours of standing off, this situation has now rapidly deteriorated,' Lauren Tomasi, the U.S. correspondent for Australia's 9News, said in a live report from downtown Los Angeles shortly before she was hit. 'The LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters, moving them on through the heart of LA,' she continued. It has been a really volatile day on the streets of Los Angeles,' Tomasi said, before reporting that downtown Los Angeles had mostly cleared out by nightfall. 9News issued a similar statement after the incident. 'Lauren Tomasi was struck by a rubber bullet. Lauren and her camera operator are safe and will continue their essential work covering these events,' the statement read, according to the outlet's reporting of the incident. 'This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers journalists can face while reporting from the frontlines of protests, underscoring the importance of their role in providing vital information,' the statement continued. A British news photographer, Nick Stern, was also struck while reporting on the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles over the weekend, according to numerous British outlets. He is now recovering from emergency surgery. 'My initial concern was, were they firing live rounds?' Stern told a news agency, noting he was struck by a 14 mm 'sponge bullet' in his thigh.
