ANTIOCH, Ill. - A motorcycle rider was critically hurt Monday morning after crashing into a garbage truck in unincorporated Antioch, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
What we know
The crash happened around 10:25 a.m. near Grass Lake Road and West Park Avenue.
A 2019 Mack garbage truck, driven by a 46-year-old Ingleside man, was heading east on Grass Lake Road just past the Grass Lake Bridge. A 35-year-old man from unincorporated Spring Grove was riding a 2017 Harley-Davidson behind the truck, also headed east.
As the truck driver began turning left into a parking lot, investigators say the motorcycle tried to pass on the left and struck the rear of the truck. The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The garbage truck driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest speed may have played a role in the crash.

The driver of the dump truck was evaluated at the scene and reportedly declined medical treatment. RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — Virginia State Police (VSP) is asking for the public's help in identifying a motorcyclist who reportedly fled an attempted traffic stop in Russell County on May 31. VSP reports that around 11 a.m., a trooper attempted a stop on a Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle for reckless driving and helmet/registration violations in the Moccasin Ridge Road and Route 71 area. VSP: 1 dead, 1 seriously injured after Smyth County crash During the pursuit, the motorcycle reportedly became disabled in the Clinch Mountain Road area. An Ormond Beach motorcyclist was killed this morning when he slammed into a sedan that pulled in front of him on State Road 415, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The 60-year-old Ormond Beach man was heading south on State Road 415 on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle when a Ford Fusion pulled out in front of him at Fort Smith Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The motorcycle hit the left side of the Ford, which was driven by a 48-year-old Deltona man. First responders took the 60-year-old to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital, but authorities pronounced him dead at the hospital. The driver of the Fusion had serious injuries, and first responders took him to the same hospital. The crash happened about 7:16 a.m., and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating. Authorities have cleared the roadblock at the intersection. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
