Israel launches 'pre-emptive strike' on Iran's nuclear programme
Israel launched a 'pre-emptive strike' on sites across Iran in the early hours of Friday, marking a major escalation that brings the two countries to the brink of all-out war.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned of retaliatory actions from Iran, saying 'a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future'.
Iranian state media announced Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander-in-Chief Maj Gen Hossein Salami was killed in the strike, along with another senior IRGC figure. Two nuclear scientists were also reported killed.
Citing a senior official, state media said Iran's response to the attack would be "decisive." Tehran also closed its airspace until "further notice."
The US denied involvement in the strikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that "Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defence." He notably did not say the US supported Israel's attack, which comes as President Donald Trump had been trying to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran.
Explosions were heard north-east of Iran's capital Tehran, state-run Nour News reported. Local news outlets said at least one of the strikes had hit a residential area, with reports of civilian casualties. Witnesses reported other strikes in Natanz and elsewhere.
Videos and photos posted on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from several locations in the Iranian capital.
Iran's air defence was activated on Friday morning at full capacity, state TV reported. Iranian officials had previously warned that any military action would elicit a firm and definite response from Tehran, news outlet Tasnim reported.
Israel's military said in a post on X that "dozens of jets" had carried out the attack on nuclear sites in Iran.
"The State of Israel has no choice but to fulfil the obligation to act in defence of its citizens and will continue to do so everywhere it is required to do so, as we have done in the past," the military said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strike as a "targeted military operation to roll back the Iranian threat to Israel's very survival".
"We struck at the heart of Iran's nuclear enrichment programme. We struck at the heart of Iran's nuclear weaponisation programme. We targeted Iran's main enrichment facility in Natanz," he said in an address. "We targeted Iran's leading nuclear scientists working on the Iranian bomb. We also struck in the heart of Iran's ballistic missile programme."
He also thanked the US, particularly Mr Trump, for its "leadership in confronting Iran's nuclear weapons programme".
Mr Rubio said in a statement that "President Trump and the Administration have taken all necessary steps to protect our forces and remain in close contact with our regional partners."
He also warned Tehran not to take action against the US.
"Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel," Mr Rubio said.
Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, said in a post on X before reports of the strike: 'At our Embassy in Jerusalem and closely following the situation. We will remain here all night. 'Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!''
The US embassy in Israel has directed "all government employees and their family members to shelter in place until further notice".
Israel has repeatedly warned it could attack Iranian nuclear plants, particularly if US-Iran talks on a deal to put limits on Tehran's nuclear programme were to collapse.
Mr Trump said on Thursday that a potential attack by Israel 'looks like it's something that could very well happen'.
Tehran on Wednesday had threatened to hit US military bases in the region if conflict breaks out, and if it were attacked over its nuclear programme.
Further fuelling tension, Iran on Thursday said it has built and will activate a third nuclear enrichment plant, after the UN's atomic watchdog agency censured Tehran for failing to comply with non-proliferation obligations meant to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon.

Israel opens fire on Palestinians seeking aid, as UN warns of relief obstruction
Israeli attacks have killed at least 15 Palestinians and wounded many others waiting to receive aid in central Gaza in the latest assault on aid seekers in recent weeks. According to local sources, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinians as they gathered around relief distribution points operated and organised by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). The GHF was launched at the end of May after Israel imposed a total blockade on all supplies to Gaza for nearly three months, which the United Nations says pushed the enclave's 2.3 million people to the verge of famine. Since its operations began, more than 274 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds more wounded while seeking food at distribution sites, which are guarded by US private military contractors and overseen by Israeli forces. The UN and aid organisations have accused the US and Israel-backed GHF, which employs private American security and logistics workers, of militarising humanitarian aid. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha), told reporters on Friday that aid distribution and delivery have been stalled as a result of the organisation. 'GHF, I think it's fair to say, has been, from a principled humanitarian standpoint, a failure. "They are not doing what a humanitarian operation should do, which is providing aid to people where they are, in a safe and secure manner.' Meanwhile, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) described the US-Israeli distribution model as a "recipe for chaos", noting that it is "also a distraction from the ongoing atrocities and a waste of resources". "It is weaponising aid and resulting in fear, discrimination, and growing desperation," it added in a post on X. Unrwa urged for the blockade on the Gaza Strip to be lifted and for the UN to resume operations, stressing that "aid must be delivered safely and at scale". Gaza foundation is a humanitarian face to mask Israel's genocide Read More » In another post, the agency warned that restrictions and hostilities continue to "obstruct humanitarian aid deliveries in #Gaza". Israeli forces have killed more than 55,297 Palestinians in Israel's ongoing war on Gaza, which several countries, as well as many international rights groups and experts, now qualify as a genocide. Since the early hours of Saturday, Israeli shelling has killed more than 23 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, with the Wafa news agency reporting the heaviest bombardment in the central region. In Gaza City, several were killed and wounded after a strike hit a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians near al-Khaldi Mosque. Meanwhile, artillery shelling was reported in al-Tuffah neighbourhood, in Gaza's Old City. Reports from the south of the enclave noted that at least three Palestinians were killed in a drone strike near the Islamic University in Khan Younis. In the same governorate, Israeli troops launched attacks targeting the Hamad City residential towers and the Asdaa area, with tanks opening fire on displaced Palestinians.

Israeli defence minister warns ‘Tehran will burn' if missile attacks continue
Tehran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel into Saturday morning, as the Israeli army declared Iran its primary war front a day after launching its biggest-ever air offensive against the Islamic Republic. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that "Tehran will burn" if it keeps firing missiles at Israeli civilians. Air raid sirens sounded across Israel, sending residents rushing into shelters as Iran launched five successive waves of missiles into the centre and north of the country. Israel said it had intercepted most of the missiles; however, the attacks caused extensive damage and killed at least three people. "The Iranian dictator is taking the citizens of Iran hostage, bringing about a reality in which they, and especially Tehran's residents, will pay a heavy price for the flagrant harm inflicted upon Israel's citizens. If Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front, Tehran will burn," Katz said in a statement. One woman was killed in the city of Ramat Gan, where nine buildings were also destroyed and hundreds of apartments in the area were damaged, according to Israeli media. Two other people were killed when an Iranian missile also struck near a home in the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters In Tel Aviv, a 32-storey building was hit and caught fire, according to the Haaretz newspaper, while other areas suffered extensive damage. Israel's paramedic services said more than 70 people in total were wounded in the Iranian attack on central Israel, including 34 in the Tel Aviv area. Meanwhile, Israel targeted Iran's air defences and missile launchers on Saturday as it pressed ahead with its assault on Iran's military and nuclear capabilities. Iranian state TV reported that two senior Iranian generals - Gholamreza Mehrabi, deputy head of intelligence of the armed forces general staff, and Mehdi Rabbani, deputy head of operations - were killed in Israeli strikes. On Friday, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said that 78 people had been killed and 320 wounded in the first wave of Israeli strikes. Iranian state TV reported on Saturday that an Israeli strike on a residential complex in Tehran killed at least 60 people, including 20 children. Exclusive: US quietly sent hundreds of Hellfire missiles to Israel before Iran attack Read More » Citing senior Iranian military officials, Iran's Fars News Agency reported that strikes against Israel will continue, with targets expected to expand to include US bases in the region in the coming days. "This confrontation will not end with last night's limited actions and Iran's strikes will continue, and this action will be very painful and regrettable for the aggressors," Fars reported. The Israeli army said on Saturday that Gaza has become a secondary front in the war and that the army's primary focus has now shifted to Iran. Israeli military sources, quoted by Haaretz, said that the Israeli air force has struck around 150 targets inside Iran. The military has admitted for the first time that it attacked, but did not destroy, the nuclear site in Fordow, south of Tehran, in Qom province. The Israeli army's chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, said Israel's overnight strikes took out Iran's air defence system, allowing its forces to now operate freely over Iranian airspace.
