As a technologist specializing in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) models and AI-driven decision systems, I have observed a critical paradox: AI models are now capable of constructing coherent realities that mimic human perception, yet they remain fundamentally unconscious and unaware of the realities they generate.
From my experience developing AI-driven assistants and enterprise automation solutions, I have witnessed firsthand how AI systems synthesize multi-modal data, hallucinate responses and simulate intelligence, often convincing enough to be mistaken for true cognition. Let's explore whether these synthetic minds actually perceive the world they build or if they are simply statistical illusionists.
Throughout my career working with enterprise AI systems, one of the biggest challenges has been ensuring AI-generated insights are grounded in reality rather than fabricated extrapolations. Unlike human cognition, which derives meaning from lived experiences and sensory interaction, AI constructs reality by assembling fragmented data into a probabilistic representation.
Multi-modal AI models—such as OpenAI's CLIP, Google's Gemini and Meta's SeamlessM4T—combine text, images and even audio to create internally consistent narratives. However, their perception is hollow—they recognize patterns but lack intentionality or subjective awareness.
For instance, when I worked on streamlining real-time AI-driven customer interactions, I found that AI-generated responses were convincing but often lacked deeper contextual awareness. The model could mimic human dialogue patterns but failed to recognize emotional subtleties or unspoken intent, making its responses feel robotic despite their surface-level coherence.
A major pitfall in AI-driven analytics is hallucination—the phenomenon where models generate plausible but false information. I encountered this while developing fraud detection algorithms for financial services, where AI models often flagged non-existent risks based on overfitting historical anomalies, rather than true emergent fraud patterns.
Hallucinations are a form of synthetic reality construction, where AI fills gaps in its data with statistically likely but fabricated content. However, there is a fundamental distinction between AI hallucination and human imagination:
• Human imagination is rooted in emotions, past experiences and abstract reasoning.
• AI hallucination is driven by probabilistic associations without underlying comprehension.
This difference became clear when working with AI-powered knowledge retrieval systems. The AI-generated reports looked factually sound, yet deeper inspection revealed inconsistencies due to missing context. AI's ability to generate a convincing but flawed version of reality makes it an impressive tool—but also a dangerous one when unchecked.
One of the most fascinating applications I've worked on is decision intelligence AI—systems that provide strategic insights to executives by analyzing vast amounts of structured and unstructured data. The challenge is that while AI can make incredibly sophisticated correlations, it lacks strategic intent and adaptive reasoning.
For example, in portfolio management automation, I saw AI models predict market trends with high accuracy. Yet, when faced with unprecedented economic events, they failed to reassess core assumptions—an ability that defines true human strategic thinking. The AI was unable to redefine its own reality the way humans do in response to new paradigms.
If AI is to move beyond being a synthetic illusionist into something more autonomous and self-aware, it will likely require an embodied cognition framework. This means AI must:
• Interact physically with the real world (beyond data streams and simulations).
• Develop self-referential memory that shapes future decisions (instead of just iterative tuning).
• Recognize the implications of its outputs beyond pattern matching.
In my experience developing AI-powered automation, I have seen that true decision making requires more than just data synthesis—it demands an understanding of cause and effect, moral weight and subjective valuation. Current AI lacks this awareness, meaning that while it can construct compelling versions of reality, it cannot truly perceive them.
As AI continues to advance, the lines between statistical simulation and synthetic cognition will blur even further. However, AI remains a reflection of human intelligence rather than an independent entity. It builds synthetic realities, but it does not live within them.
My work in AI deployment for finance, healthcare and enterprise automation has reinforced a crucial truth: AI amplifies human decision making, but it does not replace the intuitive, strategic and morally grounded perception of reality that humans possess. While AI will continue to generate highly complex synthetic minds, true cognitive perception remains a uniquely human frontier.

Tech companies, especially the ones that make and sell phones, have been telling us how important AI is for several years, and offering a range of new AI-powered features that promise to make our lives easier. But despite promising that, it seems a bunch of those companies forgot the most important thing about new features — making sure people can actually find and use them. As someone who's spent a great deal of time reviewing new phones, nothing irritates me more than being told about new AI features and then having to do a bunch of research to figure out how to access them. Even Apple, a company that has made its own AI suite a lot more transparent, is guilty of this in some regard. And since iOS 19 (or iOS 26) is set to redesign the entire Apple ecosystem, WWDC 2025 is a chance for the company to make AI feel less like homework and transform it into something a lot simpler and more intuitive. I'll preface this with an admission that not all AI features are difficult to find. If it involves going through some kind of voice assistant, like Google Gemini or Siri, then AI capabilities are literally only a voice prompt away. Similarly AI photo editing features, like Google's Magic Editor, have long been available in photo gallery apps, like Google Photos or Apple's equivalent. But at the same time, considering all these features have been around for quite some time, their location and functionality have already been ingrained into our collective memories. Plus, once you know about one of those features, you can often find similar ones in the same spot. Or in the case of voice assistants, physically ask it about the kind of things it can do. There's also a bunch of AI working in the background that the user doesn't actually need to initiate. All that processing that happens to your photos? AI has a hand there, just as it does in helping translate foreign languages for you. We've also seen AI applied to software that helps manage the battery and displays, to help phones run more smoothly and efficiently. None of this is the flashy AI that gets promoted in keynote speeches or TV commercials. It's the boring stuff that makes your phone run and perform better, without you even realizing what's going on. But if a company is trying to add some fuel to the AI hype train, the focus ends up on the new and showy AI features that look and sound good. The problem is phone makers haven't put much consideration into helping users find the darn things. One good example I've found in this area are specialist translation apps — ones that do more than Google Translate. Samsung's Interpreter Mode is the one I've noticed this with most recently, offering the ability to translate two-way conversations happening in two different languages. I know that it exists, Samsung has talked about it at great length, but looking at a Galaxy S25, it's nowhere to be seen. It's not in the app drawer, nor the home screen, nor is it one of the default apps in the Quick Settings menu. Instead you either have to use the search bar to find Interpreter Mode, or change the Quick Settings features to include it — which isn't ideal when you only have 6-8 slots to choose from. The more I think about Galaxy AI features Samsung has talked about, the more I realize that I also have no idea where they are. The same is true for Apple Intelligence, Google Gemini and the countless other AI features that have been added to smartphones in recent years. I made a point of criticizing this in my review of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, but the problem is a lot more widespread than that — and it's like phone makers don't realize this is a complete hindrance. In the days when new AI features weren't all that common, this probably wouldn't be so bad. Users get the time to get to grips with new features as they arrive, and by the time the next big software update comes around it'll be second nature. But the sheer number of new AI features being added to phones, and with little communication on how they work, makes this much more difficult. The distinct lack of official guidance on how to use new AI features is definitely getting in the way of me wanting to use them — and I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way. If phone makers really care about us using AI features more regularly, then this needs to change. I've often spoken about my severe lack of interest when it comes to using AI on phones, and a big part of that is due to the fact it's usually so difficult to find any of the new features. Back in the day, Apple would proudly declare that "it just works," with die-hard fans parroting that line for several years. But when your new smartphone comes with homework, it certainly isn't passing the intuitiveness test with a particularly good grade. Apple's not the only party guilty of this, but with WWDC set to majorly shake up how Apple software works, be it on iPhone, Mac or another Apple product, it's in a position to try and help users use Apple Intelligence without doing a thesis-load of research first. Who knows, maybe making AI actually intuitive can help make up for all its AI missteps over the past year.

3 Hot Tech Stocks With More Potential Than Any Cryptocurrency

CoreWeave's AI cloud business is booming. D-Wave's practical applications for quantum computing are impressing investors. QuantumScape could reshape the EV market with its solid-state batteries. 10 stocks we like better than CoreWeave › Cryptocurrencies might be worthwhile plays for investors who have a high tolerance for risk. However, they're also notoriously volatile and difficult to value since they often trade on market hype or murky future expectations regrading their scarcity or utility. So instead of chasing the market's hottest cryptocurrencies right now, it might be smarter to invest in three speculative tech stocks: CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS), and QuantumScape (NYSE: QS). These stocks are also undeniably risky, but they're built on firmer businesses with clearer roadmaps for the future. CoreWeave, which was once an Ethereum mining operation, abandoned the crypto market in 2018 and leveraged its big inventory of graphics processing units (GPUs) to build an artificial intelligence (AI)-oriented cloud-infrastructure business. After spending about $100 million on Nvidia's H100 data center GPUs in 2022, it carved out a niche with a dedicated AI platform which was about 35 times faster and 80% cheaper than bigger cloud-infrastructure platforms. It used its own GPUs as collateral to secure more financing, and it attracted some investments from big investors like Nvidia, Cisco, and PureStorage. Its total number of data centers rose from just three in 2022 to 33 at the end of its latest quarter. Its revenue soared from $16 million in 2022 to $1.92 billion in 2024, and it expects that figure to more than double to about $5 billion in 2025. It isn't cheap at 15 times that sales estimate, and its stock has already more than quadrupled since its initial public offering (IPO) just two months ago. But it could have plenty of room to grow as the AI market expands. CoreWeave's lack of profits, high debt, and plans to accelerate its spending on Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs could compress its near-term valuations and cool off its stock, but it could head a lot higher over the next few years if it successfully scales up its business and narrows its losses. D-Wave Computing develops quantum annealing tools which can help companies optimize their schedules, workflows, and supply chains. Through quantum computing, which stores zeros and ones simultaneously in qubits, it operates more efficiently than traditional computers which store that data in separate binary bits. D-Wave's core Leap platform, which can be integrated into bigger public cloud platforms, is essentially a quantum-powered efficiency expert. It runs an organization's processes through its systems in various ways, and it identifies the one which consumes the least power as the most efficient. As a quantum-powered platform, D-Wave can map out all of those potential outcomes at a much faster rate than traditional computers. More than 100 companies -- including Deloitte, Mastercard, Lockheed Martin, and Accenture -- already use its services. That makes it a more practical play on the nascent quantum-computing market than its other niche research-oriented peers. From 2024 to 2027, analysts expect D-Wave's revenue to surge from $9 million to $74 million. It's not expected to turn profitable anytime soon, and it might seem absurdly overvalued at 70 times its projected sales for 2027. But it could grow a lot bigger as the quantum-computing market expands over the next few decades. QuantumScape is another speculative stock which could skyrocket over the long run. It develops solid-state lithium metal batteries which have better thermal resistance, faster charging times, and last longer than traditional lithium ion batteries. That makes them well suited for electric vehicles (EV), but it hasn't commercialized any of its batteries yet. QuantumScape is backed by Volkswagen, and its first QSE-5 batteries will have a fast charging time of less than 15 minutes with an EV range of up to 500 miles. Most EVs currently have a range of roughly 300 miles with an average charging time of 30 minutes. It's only shipped a few low-volume samples so far, and it doesn't expect to mass produce any batteries or generate any revenue until 2026. But this year, the company is transitioning from its older Raptor separator process to its newer Cobra process. That long-awaited upgrade should boost its stability and yields to pave the way toward the mass production of its batteries. QuantumScape is worth $2.4 billion right now, but it's tough to value because it's unprofitable, isn't generating any revenue yet, and still faces competition from other battery makers and automakers. But if it successfully scales up its business, it might just attract a stampede of bulls and outperform any of the market's top cryptocurrencies.
