Melaka police share image to raise awareness of night shift dangers
MELAKA: Melaka police have shared an image of a 20-year-old convenience store employee lying dazed and bloodied after being bludgeoned with a baseball bat during a robbery.
The picture aims to raise public awareness about the growing dangers faced by graveyard shift workers at 24-hour outlets.
The male victim from Taman Bunga Raya in Bukit Beruang was working the late-night shift at a 24-hour store in Taman Sin Hoe, Bukit Baru, when the lone assailant struck at around 4.40am on Saturday (June 14).
Melaka Tengah police chief Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspect, believed to be a delivery rider, entered the premises wearing a helmet and face mask.
'The suspect approached the counter under the pretext of requesting an RM50 e-wallet top-up before suddenly grabbing cash from the drawer,' he said late Saturday night.
ACP Christopher Patit said the employee resisted when the suspect seized RM300, prompting the attacker to strike him on the head with a baseball bat.
'The victim was rushed to Hospital Melaka with head injuries, and his condition is currently reported as stable,' he added.
The incident came to light after the store's supervisor, identified only as "Mr Tong," found the employee in such a condition and alerted authorities.
The same suspect is believed to be responsible for a second attempted robbery later the same day at another 24-hour outlet in Taman Saujana Puri in Bukit Katil.
"In that incident, the suspect used a similar modus operandi by pretending to request an e-wallet top-up.
'When the 31-year-old male cashier attempted to return the change, the suspect reached into the cash drawer and, when the employee tried to intervene, struck him on the wrist with a camera tripod," he said.
The suspect fled on a motorcycle, and the cashier sustained minor injuries.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt in the course of committing robbery.
'We have obtained the suspect's fingerprint from one of the locations and are confident of arresting him soon,' he added.
This is not the first time 24-hour retail outlets in Melaka have been targeted.
In August 2023, Melaka police arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a spree of 20 break-ins involving petrol station convenience stores across Johor, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka.
The suspect used tools to smash glass doors and steal cash and goods worth thousands of ringgit.
In July 2021, a 48-year-old woman was detained following a series of smash-and-grab burglaries at petrol station convenience stores in the Melaka Tengah district.

The daughter of one of the victims, who claimed that her parents and aunt, who left for Saudi Arabia with the agent on May 9, were forced to trek through dangerous routes from Jeddah to Makkah without proper documents, food, or water, allegedly to avoid detection by Saudi authorities. The group of pilgrims also claimed that they were locked in a dark, cramped room and were told to pay an additional RM9,000 to retrieve belongings they had left behind, despite already having paid RM30,000 for the haj package.

High Court sets Aug 17 for mention in Sabari Baharom murder case
ALOR STAR: The High Court here has fixed Aug 17 for mention of a murder case involving a contractor and his nephew, who are accused of killing retired Felcra employee Sabari Baharom, 62, last year. Judge Datuk Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas set the date after being informed that the defence had yet to complete the required document submissions. Deputy public prosecutor Kamaliza Md Zain appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were represented by counsel T. Jayaraj. Family members of the late Sabari were present during the proceedings. On April 15, the accused, Mazuan Hanafi, 39, and Muhd Asyraf Idris, 27, claimed trial at the High Court to the charge of murdering Sabari on Sept 4, 2024. According to the charge, the two were jointly accused of killing the victim on a bridge in Kampung Empa, along Sungai Padang Terap in Kubang Pasu, at around 5.30am. The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death penalty, or, if not sentenced to death, imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years and up to 40 years. Sabari, who lived alone in Kampung Mengkuang Tengah, Kuala Pegang, Baling, was reported missing on Sept 4 last year. The case was reclassified as a murder investigation on Sept 30, after police arrested two main suspects, who were previously carrying out renovation work at a neighbour's house. Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh reportedly said the suspects confessed to binding Sabari's hands, taping his mouth, and dumping him into Sungai Padang Terap. Investigators believe the victim was abducted after recognising the suspects during a break-in at his home. It was previously reported that one of the suspects, a contractor, was allegedly a gambling addict who used RM16,000 from Sabari's bank account to gamble in Batam, Indonesia.

Local councillor charged with raping woman at laundrette
KOTA BARU: A local authority councillor was charged at the Sessions Court here today with raping a 29-year-old woman late last month. Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, was charged before judge Zulkifli Abdullah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code with rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. He is accused of raping the woman at a laundrette in Kuala Krai about 2pm on May 29. Deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein. Jaya pleaded not guilty to the charge. Kamarul proposed bail be set at RM30,000 with additional conditions, including a warning not to disturb the victim. Ariff requested that bail be set at RM15,000, citing his client's responsibilities as a leader in the Indian community and the fact that he has 12 children, including stepchildren. The court allowed bail at RM15,000 with two sureties and fixed July 15 for mention. The accused was also ordered to report to the nearest police station once every two months.
