Coco Gauff responds to Aryna Sabalenka's French Open final ‘joke' comments

Independent5 hours ago

Coco Gauff won her first French Open title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, despite difficult, windy conditions.
Sabalenka criticised her own performance, citing 70 unforced errors and calling it the "worst final I have ever played."
Sabalenka suggested that Iga Swiatek, who she defeated in the semi-finals, would have won the final and accused Gauff of hitting the ball off the frame, with lucky shots landing in. She said: 'It felt like a joke.'
Gauff responded to Sabalenka's comments, disagreeing with the assessment and highlighting her own victory over Swiatek in their previous match.
Gauff acknowledged the tough conditions and emphasised the importance of willpower and mental strength in securing the win.

Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz: French Open men's final score and updates

Hello and welcome to coverage from the French Open as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz get set to finish the clay court season in dramatic style. The two best men's players in the world go head-to-head on Court Philippe Chatrier in less than an hour for the honour of lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires. Sinner has won the last two grand slams, the US and Australian Open, but lost the last meeting between the players at the Italian Open. 'It's fun, and not fun, you know. It's both ways,' said Sinner, the world No 1. 'But I think we try to push ourselves in the best possible way. I believe when there is a good match, it's also good to play, you know. It's not only to watch, but also to play. It's very special. 'And the stage, it doesn't get any bigger now. Grand-slam finals against Carlos, it's a special moment for me and for him, too. 'He won here last year, so let's see what's coming. But for sure, the tension you feel before the match and during the match is a little bit different in a way, because we are both very young, we are both different, but talented.' Alcaraz is the defending champion and has won their last four meetings, including the semi-final here last year. 'Jannik, he's the best tennis player right now. I mean, he's destroying every opponent,' said Alcaraz, who has dominated the clay court season, winning in Monte Carlo and Rome. 'I love that battle. But, you know, most of the time is just about suffering, being pushed to the limit. 'But my favourite thing is it gives you the feedback of how can I be better, a better player. I think that's important, and that's beautiful, even though if I win or not.'

Furious Barcelona star is 'ready to go to WAR with the club' and claims board are leaking information against him in effort to 'push him out of the back door'

One Barcelona player is ready to go to war with the club and has accused the board of leaking information to force him out, according to an explosive report. Veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, also the Blaugrana's captain, is said to be deeply upset over how the LaLiga giants are handling his future. Espanyol stopper Joan Garcia is rapidly closing in on moving to the Nou Camp and he is likely to replace Ter Stegen, who missed much of last season through injury and lost his spot in the starting XI to Wojciech Szczesny, as Hansi Flick's No 1. It has been claimed that Barcelona president Joan Laporta has even told members of the board that Ter Stegen, 33, must be sold once Garcia arrives. However, Spanish outlet Sport have now reported that Ter Stegen is refusing to be pushed out. He is said to be shocked by the situation and 'deeply hurt', believing the development is a 'direct attack' on his 'professional character'. Sporting director Deco will explain Barcelona's stance to Ter Stegen and his camp in the near future and the club want an amicable outcome for all parties. But Ter Stegen has accused figures of purposefully leaking information to damage his reputation in a desperate attempt to pressure him to leave of his own volition. After recovering from the season-ending injury suffered in September, Ter Stegen has returned to full fitness and wants to fight for his spot in the side. He is tied down to a contract running until 2028, which was signed under Laporta. Barcelona plan to make it clear to the goalkeeper that Garcia will be Flick's first-choice option with Szczesny, once he pens a new deal, his back-up. Sport claim that Ter Stegen could stay at the club, but only if he accepts his new bit-part role. Should Ter Stegen decide to move on, Barcelona would reportedly be willing to release him and pay him a year of his contract as compensation. Ter Stegen is reportedly 'outraged' and is convinced his situation is personal rather than a sporting issue. He is also said to privately blame both Deco and Flick. 'No one has told me about this, so I don't know the situation,' Ter Stegen said. 'I'm not worried. I know that I will be at Barcelona next year,' he added. 'If I remember correctly, and if no news has happened in the last few hours, we only have two goalkeepers for next season, Inaki [Pena] and me.' Ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014 and has won 19 trophies in Spain, including the Champions League and six LaLiga titles.

Amelie Mauresmo says French Open organisers will address problem of empty seats

But with the match beginning at 11am, the vast Court Philippe-Chatrier was almost deserted, with many of the French spectators having lunch instead. 'In two weeks we have our debrief all together and definitely talk about these subjects and see how we can make it work better.' The lack of women's matches in the prime-time night sessions remains a hot topic but Mauresmo once again stressed that is purely down to men's best-of-five set matches being longer, ensuring value for money for ticket holders. 'I think we wouldn't be having this conversation if we would have the same format for both games, because in my opinion it's the length or the possible length of the match that is making it hard for us in terms of scheduling,' she added.' Amelie Mauresmo oversaw the 2025 tournament (Christophe Ena/AP) The French Open remains the last of the four grand slams to still use line judges rather than electric line calling, which is currently considered not reliable on clay. Former Wimbledon champion Mauresmo said the standard of line judging was good at the tournament, but admitted the issue still remains up for discussion. 'Generally speaking, we had a very high level and this is a very great satisfaction for us, because, as you know, we are the last of the Mohicans to some extent with the line judges,' she said. 'We will be looking at it again this year, in what way would there not be line judges next year. I don't really have the answer to that, but we will look at that question.'
