RIYADH: The Saudi aid agency KSrelief has helped to restore and re-equip the Higher Institute of Health Sciences in Yemen's Lahij governorate.
The project included repairing and restoring six main buildings, furnishing 10 classrooms, and renovating 36 student dormitories, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
It also involved furnishing 38 bathrooms to ensure proper living conditions, and equipping four modern medical laboratories with advanced tools to help enhance health education.
KSrelief also provided the institute with more than 500 pieces of furniture and supplied the dormitories with an additional 414 items.
The agency delivered more than 800 medical devices across various departments — including nursing, surgery, reproductive health, and dentistry — in addition to five electronic devices to support teaching.
The project aims to improve the educational environment, provide better conditions for students and staff in Lahij, and serve students from neighboring governorates.
An estimated 1,850 people are direct beneficiaries, while the broader impact is expected to reach about 860,000 across Yemen, the SPA reported.
Saleh Al-Dhaibani, KSrelief's office director in Aden, said the project seeks to strengthen the academic and professional capacities of health personnel by offering a conducive learning environment.
The initiative is part of a series of humanitarian projects by KSrelief to enhance Yemen's education and health infrastructure, ultimately preparing skilled health professionals to meet the country's needs.

Lana wins waste transport containers project with Defense Ministry

Lana Medical Co. was awarded a project with the Ministry of Defense to provide non-medical waste transport containers for Prince Sultan Military Medical City. The project's value will not exceed 5% of the company's 2024 revenues, according to a statement to Tadawul today, June 26. The deal entails providing non-medical waste containers for a period of 36 months, starting from the date of site receipt. The project is pending the contract signing and the Ministry of Finance's approval, in accordance with the project documents, specifications, and bills of quantities. This project is deemed key in the company's plan to expand its provision of integrated waste management solutions in the healthcare sector. This is given its focus on improving the quality of environmental services, implementing global best practices in waste management, supporting national initiatives to reduce pollution and promote public health, achieving sustainability, and reducing the environmental impact resulting from transportation and disposal operations. The financial impact of the project is expected to be reflected in Lana's financials starting from Q3 2025, the company noted. The project also reflects Lana's ability to implement large-scale projects within healthcare facilities, while also adopting the highest technical and operational standards. This project award is an extension of Lana's strategy to strengthen its leadership in the Saudi environmental services sector. It should also contribute effectively to achieving the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in the field of environmental sustainability, the statement added. According to data available on Argaam, Lana reported a revenue of SAR 84.09 million in 2024. Therefore, a 5% portion makes around SAR 4.2 million.

Authorities recover 20,000 soap bars for anti-polio campaigns being sold illegally in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Pakistani authorities on Wednesday recovered 20,000 soap bars provided by the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) for exclusive use in anti-polio campaigns after they were found being illegally sold in the northwestern Peshawar city, the UN agency said. Authorities seized the soap bars in a raid conducted at the city's famous Sabzi Mandi area, with UNICEF raising serious concerns about the diversion of humanitarian supplies to the open market. 'The seized consignment included approximately 20,000 soap bars, reportedly marked for exclusive use in Polio Campaigns,' the UN agency said. UNICEF said provincial officials believe it is highly unlikely that such a large-scale misappropriation could have occurred without either the 'active involvement or gross negligence' of personnel within the provincial Health Department and UNICEF's local and national operations. 'Further investigations are underway to determine how the supplies were diverted from official distribution channels to Open Market,' the statement said. 'Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of collusion by insiders or lapses in oversight mechanisms.' UNICEF said the incident underscored the critical need for greater accountability and monitoring in aid distribution processes, particularly in sensitive public health programs like the polio eradication campaign. Polio is a paralyzing disease with no cure, making prevention through vaccination critical. Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine, along with the completion of the routine immunization schedule for all children, are essential to build strong immunity against the virus. According to Pakistan's polio program, 10 cases have been confirmed so far this year, with 74 reported in 2024. Pakistan, one of the last two countries where polio remains endemic, has made significant progress in curbing the virus, with annual cases dropping from around 20,000 in the early 1990s to just eight in 2018. The country reported six cases in 2023 and only one in 2021.

Saudi Arabia leads regional effort to improve nutrition, public health

RIYADH: The World Health Organization has designated the Saudi Food and Drug Authority as its Regional Center for Nutrition Collaboration for the Eastern Mediterranean region, which includes 22 countries. According to the authority, the recognition reflects its work in implementing food and nutrition policies aimed at improving public health, enhancing quality of life and reducing non-communicable diseases. The designation supports efforts to develop healthier food systems and encourage better eating habits, according to the Saudi Press Agency. The center will assist member countries in applying key strategies of the WHO. These include reducing salt and sugar intake, eliminating partially hydrogenated oils, limiting the marketing of unhealthy foods to children and building a regional database on nutritional content to support evidence-based policies. The appointment also confirms the authority's role in enforcing nutrition-related regulations that support healthier food environments. It aligns with the goals of the Health Sector Transformation Program under Vision 2030. The WHO has praised Saudi Arabia's removal of partially hydrogenated oils from food products, citing it as a model practice. The Kingdom received a certificate of recognition and now leads an international working group to help other countries replicate this achievement. Saudi Arabia is also among the first countries to reduce salt intake through specific legislation and regulatory measures, the SPA reported on Wednesday. To help the center meet its goals, the World Health Organization will provide technical expertise, reference materials, guidance tools and training content. The center will work closely with regional data hubs and carry out its objectives through initiatives such as policy workshops, progress monitoring, forming expert task forces, and developing a regional framework and action plan.
