Vaclav Cerny Rangers transfer hope dashed further as Trabzonspor outline plan to meet Czech's demands

Cerny is in demand this summer following his eye-catching loan spell at Ibrox Rangers' already slim chances of signing loan star Vaclav Cerny have suffered another blow after reports emerged that transfer rivals Trabzonspor are clearing the path to make a move for the Czech star. ‌ Turkish outfit Trabzonspor want to land the 27-year-old. but could face competition from league rivals Besiktas and several clubs in Spain. ‌ We also revealed how Cerny's next transfer could see him bank a lucrative wage packet of up to €3.5million (£2.9million) a year off the back of his impressive season at Ibrox where he registered 18 goals and nine assists in 52 matches in all competitions. And according to reports in Turkey, Trabzonspor could cash in one one of their other stars to free up more wages for Cerny's potential arrival. Taka Gazete claim that the Trabzon-based side are hoping to sell attacking midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov for around €11million (£9.3million) despite only signing him back in February. Ukraine international Zubkov was purchased for a fee in the region of €6million (£5million) and caught the eye with eight goals and four assists in 20 games for Trabzonspor. But the report states that they will be willing to cash in on the 28-year-old this summer, making a tidy profit in the process. In turn, that cash could then allow manager Fatih Tekke to push the boat out to try and bring Cerny to north-east Turkey. Rangers might miss out on Cerny but sporting director Kevin Thelwell is ramping up the Ibrox transfer drive to give new boss Russell Martin some much needed reinforcements ahead of the new season. ‌ Record Sport told last week that talks over potential deals for Leicester City defender Conor Coady and Maccabi Tel Aviv frontman Dor Turgeman are both in the offing. Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises vowed to pour £20million into the transfer kitty this summer and a former Manchester United insider is now calling on Gers to use those funds to seal a sensational swoop for Christian Eriksen. ‌ The Denmark hero will leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract next month and ex Red Devils transfer chief Mick Brown reckons the 33-year-old might put his lofty expectations aside to make the move north of the border. He told Football Insider: "Rangers have to be clever in the transfer market. "They have to assess where they can get players who will lift the quality in the squad and help to close the gap to Celtic, but won't cost too much money. ‌ "From what I hear, they will look to explore the free agent market because there's some quality there. They're considering whether to take a chance on somebody like Christian Eriksen. "He's into his 30s now, he's not going to get box to box, but he can pass and manipulate the ball in ways that their current crop of players can't do. "After leaving Man United, he'll be looking for a new club and Rangers is an interesting opportunity. "He could become an orchestrator in the middle of the park, if they can get runners around him and let him focus on what he can do in possession. "On the other side of it, they have to consider he'll probably be on high wages and might not have the legs any more if that's what they want. But it's move they're looking at and one they might decide is worth the risk and worth the gamble.

BBC axe Wimbledon pundit after being told to 'hang its head in shame'

BBC axe Wimbledon pundit after being told to 'hang its head in shame' Nick Kyrgios has been ruled out of Wimbledon due to injury and will not be part of the BBC's punditry team, with the Australian also snubbed by ESPN Controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios was a Wimbledon pundit for the BBC last year (Image: BBC ) Nick Kyrgios, the controversial Australian tennis star, has reportedly been dropped from the BBC's Wimbledon punditry team. Last year, Kyrgios brought his expertise to SW19 as a commentator after injury forced him out of competition. He had aspirations to actually participate at Wimbledon this year; however, it appears bad luck has intervened again with a reoccurrence of injury issues. Kyrgios, a finalist at Wimbledon three years prior, kicked off his 2025 season at the Brisbane International and took part in the Australian Open where he was defeated in the first round by Jacob Fearnley, also playing in the Miami Open. ‌ Since his last competitive match, speculation arose about a potential return to broadcasting. ‌ Nevertheless, reports from The Telegraph indicate that the BBC has decided not to include Kyrgios in their commentary team for the Wimbledon tournament, and he hasn't been picked up by ESPN either, despite having worked with them during the Australian Open. His engagement by the BBC last year was met with criticism, particularly as it came just over a year after he confessed to assaulting an ex-girlfriend. Caroline Nokes, who chaired the women and equalities committee at that time, reproached the corporation, stating they should 'hang its head in shame' for the decision to hire him, reports the Express. Article continues below In a statement, the BBC defended their choice, stating: "We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only." Kyrgios has recently offered his services to other prominent sports broadcasters. The legal matter he was entangled in has reached its conclusion, is a matter of public record, and he has openly discussed it. ‌ Following his guilty plea to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Kyrgios expressed remorse: "I was not in good place when this happened and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret. "I know it wasn't OK and I'm sincerely sorry for the hurt I caused." In recent years, Kyrgios' career has been hindered by a string of injuries, forcing him to miss numerous major tournaments. Article continues below This month, he shared with his fans that a new setback would prevent him from participating in the grass season. He took to social media to explain: "I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year.'I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. "This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever."

Minnen wins first WTA 125 title at Lexus Birmingham Open

Greet Minnen put a difficult run behind her with a sterling victory over Linda Fruhvirtova in the Lexus Birmingham Open women's singles final. Minnen won her first WTA 125 title with a 6-2 6-1 win over Fruhvirtova in her second match of a rain-affected final day. The fifth seed had twice tasted defeat at this level but blew her Czech opponent away to lift the trophy. "It's a wonderful moment, it hasn't been easy the last few years, I haven't played a lot finals," Minnen said. "To be here, to win a final on the grass is the best I could hope for honestly. "It's been a tough week with all the rain, for everybody involved in the tournament, thanks to everyone for helping out. "I know it's not easy with the weather, I don't know how I pulled it off, let's not think about it and enjoy it." The Belgian took both break-point opportunities she had in the first set to move into a commanding position. Fruhvirtova broke in the first game of the second set, her first break of the day, but Minnen immediately responded and it was one-way traffic from there as Minnen closed out the match with six straight games. Minnen had earlier ground out a 6-3 7-6 (7) 7-6 (5) semi-final win over Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland, which had been played over two days. Fruhvirtova said: "It was a great week for me, of course I am disappointed it didn't go the way I had hoped today. "I have to give credit Greet today, she was too good. But overall, it was a positive week for me. "I had two season without a final and this is my second this season so I just have to appreciate it, it means a lot to me." Finland's Otto Virtanen timed his men's singles triumph to perfection as he beat Colton Smith 6-4 6-4. Virtanen earned the only break of the opening set at 5-4 and then held his nerve when Smith took a 3-0 lead in the second. The World No. 114 broke back immediately before again breaking to move 5-4 ahead and close out the match. Victory was Virtanen's first title on grass, with Smith also playing in his first grass court final. 'It feels amazing, playing on grass, I don't think we have a single grass court in Finland,' Virtanen said. 'But I have always liked the surface, I played juniors on it, but then in the last two or three years too. I always enjoy playing a grass tournament. 'It suits my game as well. It feels great to win a lot of good matches, and today I played a good match from my side. 'He put me in really tough situations, and so I had to do my best on very important points." Smith had beaten third seed Rinky Hijikata 6-3 6-4 earlier in the day to advance to the showpiece. The American said: 'I just want to thank the city of Birmingham for coming out to support. This has been an unforgettable week for me. 'It is fun, I am looking forward to keep building from here. I just want to thank my family and everybody else that has been supporting me, it has been incredible. 'I would probably say grass is now one of my favourite surfaces.' Marcelo Demoliner and Sadio Doumbia triumphed in a disrupted men's doubles final, beating Diego Hidalgo and Patrick Trhac 6-4 3-6 10-5. The match had been due to take place on Saturday but was pushed back due to rain, and the wet weather interrupted the final with Demoliner and Doumbia 6-4 2-3 ahead. Trhac and Hidalgo took advantage of the delay to immediately break Demoliner and Doumbia on the restart and held on to their advantage to ensure a Championship tie-break. With the pairs locked at 5-5 all, the fourth seeds reeled off five points on the bounce to claim the title. For 36-year-old Demoliner, it marks a first Challenger win since 2009, while Doumbia extended his record in Challengers finals to 19-0.
