Pirates! The Penzance Musical

Pirates! The Penzance Musical

Time Out25-04-2025

Broadway review by Adam Feldman
This show is of a kind that I shall dub an operettical:
A British-Broadway hybrid that is cleverly synthetical.
It starts with operetta of the comical variety
That Sullivan and Gilbert wrote to tickle high society.
The Pirates of Penzance, a pageant witty and Victorian,
Premiered in 1880 on our calendar Gregorian.
It still is entertaining but perhaps not in a date-night way;
It seems a bit too fusty for revival on the Great White Way.
So Rupert Holmes has come along to pump some Broadway jazz in it:
To add a little spice and put some Dixieland pizzazz in it.
And thanks to these injections, neither rev'rent nor heretical,
We now have Holmes's model for a modern operettical.

Best known for Drood (and also for his hit 'Piña Colada Song'),
He hasn't wrecked the story or egregiously forgot a song.
But to ensure the whole endeavor's jazzier and bluer leans,
He takes the show from Cornwall and resets it down in New Orleans.
The Crescent City's sass and brass have quite rejuvenated it
As Joe Joubert and Daryl Waters have reorchestrated it.
(They've also added melodies that never here have been afore,
On loan from Iolanthe, The Mikado and from Pinafore.)
With silliness and energy the show is chockablock, well-set
Amid the brightly colored NOLA streets of David Rockwell's set.
And now that we have looked at questions musico-aesthetical,
We move on to the plot of this diverting operettical.

The Pirate King swashbuckles on a large if not momentous ship
Where Frederic, turning 21, is ending his apprenticeship.
And when this duty-driven laddie reaches his majority
His conscience will demand that he accept the law's authority.
Upon that time, young Frederic knows, though he may feel a loss acute,
His former pals, the pirates, he will have to fight and prosecute.
(Unless, that is, some hitherto-undreamed-of technicality
Should come to light and complicate his noble plan's legality.)
But what if Frederic's former nurse, the sorely misbegotten Ruth,
Discovers in some document an old and long-forgotten truth?
It might, if this scenario's not strictly theoretical,
Entail a major conflict in this model operettical.

Scott Ellis's direction is all tongue-in-cheek dramatical
And Warren Carlyle's dances are enjoyably emphatical
But notwithstanding those behind-the-scenesters' benefactions here,
It's fair to say the actors are the principal attractions here.
The Pirate King's embodied by a glist'ning Ramin Karimloo
(Inspiring more dropped panties than you'd find in any harem loo)
And you could comb through New Orleans and all surrounding parishes,
And never find a Frederic as pluperfect as Nick Barasch's.
The Drag Race legend Jinkx Monsoon, all blowsy eccentricity,
Brings Ruth to life with vocal chops and facial elasticity.
Performances italicized (and not just parenthetical)
Combine to lift the spirits of this lively operettical.

Samantha Williams makes a lusty Mabel; Preston Truman Boyd
Delivers his tap-dancing like an ably-programmed humanoid.
But David Hyde Pierce steals the show, I say with no cajolery.
His Major-Gen'ral is a master class in brilliant drollery:
A rapid-patter songster with aplomb matched by no other's style
(And daughters pirates yearn for, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers –style).
In glorious precision, Pierce elicits every gazer's smiles
As lovably and nimbly as he did when he played Frasier 's Niles.

The modern world is full of stress, so go and have a party, brah,
And shake it like a necklace made of gaudy beads at Mardi Gras.
Enjoy this Broadway hybrid that is tuneful and poetical:
A most delightful model of a modern operettical.
Pirates! The Penzance Musical. Todd Haimes Theatre (Broadway). Music by Arthur Sullivan. Libretto by W.S. Gilbert. Adapted by Rupert Holmes. Directed by Scott Ellis. With David Hyde Pierce, Ramin Karimloo, Nicholas Barasch, Jinkx Monsoon, Samantha Williams, Preston Truman Boyd. Running time: 2hrs 30mins. One intermission.
Post scriptum:
These rhymes of mine, I grant you, may not all be perfect, but they were
The best that I could do—and face it, standards are not what they were.
I'm just a humble swimmer in this lyrical aquarium;
If W.S. Gilbert's what you want, then go unbury him.

POLL: What do you think to Prince Harry's strange plan for his kids?

Prince Harry and Meghan may have stepped back from royal life - but they're not shutting the palace gates for their kids just yet. The couple reportedly want Archie and Lilibet to keep their titles, sparking debate over whether it's about choice … or mixed messages. Despite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping away from their royal duties and all the palace drama a while ago, it seems they're keeping the door open for their kids to walk a different path. They reportedly want Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to hang onto their royal titles - just in case they decide they do want to be working royals one day. Apparently, Harry and Meghan see it as giving their kids the option when they're older. But here's where it gets a bit sticky, as the 'plan' comes after the source claimed the Sussexes feared passports for their children were being held up due to the use of their royal titles. ‌ It has all raised a few eyebrows., with former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond asking why the Sussexes are holding so tightly to the titles when they've been so outspoken about wanting out of the royal system in the first place. ‌ So, what do you think? Is Harry being thoughtful about giving his kids future choices — or is it a bit contradictory after everything he and Meghan have said about the monarchy? What do you think to Harry's plan? Take our poll below. If you can't see it, click here Jennie Bond told the Mirror: "I really don't understand why, having extricated themselves from a life they did not enjoy and in which Harry has publicly spoken of 'feeling trapped', they want to give their children the option of re-joining. It makes no sense. "Who knows what's going to happen in the future? But it's very hard to see how two children who are clearly now more American than British would want to change their whole way of life and become working members of the royal family." Archie and Lilibet got prince and princess titles when their grandfather King Charles became monarch in 2022. The first time their titles were formally announced was after Lilibet's christening in March 2023. ‌ Due to the reported hold-up in their British passports, it is said that Harry started to explore the possibility of changing his family surname to Spencer in a nod to his late mother, Princess Diana. And Jennie added: "I think Harry has always been more Spencer than Windsor, so if he was ever going to change his name, it would be to Spencer. "But this would be a final nail in the coffin of his relationship with his father and his brother. It would amount to a public declaration that he no longer saw himself as part of the royal family." ‌ There has been continued controversy over the Sussexes' HRH titles since the pair quit their royal roles five years ago. As part of their Megxit negotiations with the Palace, Meghan and the Duke of Sussex agreed to stop using 'Her Royal Highness' and 'His Royal Highness' at the end of March 2020. They still retain the styles, with Harry having had his since birth, but they are essentially held in abeyance. However, earlier this year, it emerged Meghan had used her HRH style on a gift basket sent to make-up entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima last year, with a monogrammed card reading: 'With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex'. ‌ Kern Lima showed an image of the present in footage of her podcast interview with Meghan. It contained a jar of Meghan's jam which she has started selling as part of her As Ever lifestyle business brand. A source described the basket as a 'personal gift'. The duchess's representatives denied that the couple used them, but a source later said that the Sussexes did not use HRH publicly but retained the style, and did not use it for commercial purposes.

'I went to Benidorm on holiday and couldn't believe cost of a pint'

A man, who is known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, recently headed to the popular holiday destination and was left gobsmacked by the price of a drink A Brit was gobsmacked by the cost of a pint in Benidorm, despite being a frequent visitor to Spain. Known amongst his TikTok followers as the Benidorm Fanatic, he recounts his visit to Uncle Ron's, a bar renowned for its affordably priced pints, where he found himself pleasantly surprised by just how much bang he got for his buck. In his popular video, he raves: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." ‌ Upon reaching the bar, he continued: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it." ‌ He enthusiastically shared his verdict, saying: "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." The video quickly gained traction, prompting viewers to share their impressions and even their own tales of Benidorm adventures. Among the comments, one user exclaimed: "Wow," while another who'd been there on holiday exclaimed: "I was there last week." Someone else who'd be there said: "Lovely pint. Had many." Whil a fellow TikToker simply added: "Bargain." Uncle Ron's, a hit with British holidaymakers in Benidorm, is famed for its budget-friendly tipples and hearty meals. ‌ TripAdvisor reviews boast of the establishment's offerings from breakfast through to dinner, with an average rating of 3.8 out of 5 on the platform, suggesting it's a must-visit for those seeking a decent meal and drinks while away. In the review section, one visitor commented: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." ‌ Another shared their experience: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third reviewer added: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"

Lorde ‘pretty keen' to ‘pull some strings' and make Glastonbury appearance

This draws speculation as to whether the singer from New Zealand, who does not feature on the official line-up, will play during one of the slots marked TBA. The full scheduling for this year was announced earlier in the week and includes sets from Irish rap trio Kneecap and singer Charli XCX, as well as headline performances from British pop band The 1975, Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop singer Olivia Rodrigo. Asked if she would be playing at the festival, Lorde told Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 2 show: 'You know, I'm pretty keen, honestly. 'I feel like, because the album's going to be coming out, I am quite tempted by what's going on, because I've got lots of friends playing as well. We'll see if I can pull some strings and get there.' The 28-year-old is friends with a number of singers including Brat star Charli XCX, who is playing the Other Stage on the Saturday night. Earlier in the year, the British singer played at US festival Coachella where Lorde made an appearance to perform their collaborative version of Girl, So Confusing. The singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, has played at Glastonbury before and performed on the Other Stage in 2017 and the Pyramid Stage in 2022. Asked what it was like to walk onto the Pyramid Stage, she said: 'Absolutely unbelievable, enormous. I was shooketh at the scale. So many cameras … oh goodness. So beautiful, so amazing. 'In 2017 we played the Other Stage, which was so amazing, that was kind of sunset and very moody and just the best. It's the best festival in the world.' The singer shot to fame with her chart-topping single Royals in 2013, which was included in her album Pure Heroine. She has since released the albums Melodrama (2017) and Solar Power (2021), with her fourth studio album, Virgin, to be released on June 27. Glastonbury is running from June 25 to June 29 with performances from the likes of US rapper Doechii, UK singer Raye and veteran rocker Sir Rod Stewart, who will be playing during the coveted legends slot.
