'Time had taken them' but football means they live on
A last-minute winner, a comeback, an away day for the ages, a cup win, a league title.Just some of football's sweetest elements. They do not arrive too frequently, they punctuate a season if you are lucky and yet, though they fleetingly come a fan's way, their memory lasts a lifetime.Perhaps only one thing can make such moments of joy more significant - who you share them with.A close friend, a spouse, a family member - a connection can take one's emotion and increase it by orders of magnitude.Shortly before Liverpool's European Cup win in 2019, fan and renowned Kopite Stephen Monaghan formed part of an emotional video released by the club. In it, he explained such occasions took him to his father's graveside, where he would remember, ponder and wish he could share another day in the sun, another day of shared feeling, another day of being together, with their beloved Reds. The big occasions crystallise the mind. The hullabaloo of daily life kind of stops because big things do that to you. The subsequent thinking space creates room to consider what those no longer with us would make of it all. What would they say? Could you feel their happiness? What would you give to do so? Such thoughts can be warming and cruel. You want them though, for reasons that run really deep.Within the sensory overload of fireworks, flares and joy at Sunday's title-clinching day for Liverpool, one fan showed me a bit of what was going on inside.Supporter Stephen Davies pointed to a bracelet he wore, one sporting an inscription which read 'Redmen gang of four... YNWA'.He explained his friends Peter Walsh, Larry Snell and Tommy Lawton - all pictured with a young Stephen below - were no longer with us. Time had taken them. Stephen was left with memories of trips around the country and continent with a group of friends who had seen, felt and shared the joys of success and the tragedy of Hillsborough.I asked him if he would think of them on this day and a subtle nod, illuminated with watery eyes, answered emphatically. They were alive in his thoughts. There are thousands of Liverpool fans celebrating today and millions who no longer can.Football, its highs and the human heart have a way of making sure those lost souls live on. What can be more special than that?

Revealed: The staggering amount Florian Wirtz will be paid a WEEK if he completes Liverpool move - with German set to earn more than Virgil van Dijk
Florian Wirtz is set to earn a staggering salary if he completes a move to Liverpool this summer. Arne Slot is looking to splash out to improve an already impressive squad after they won the Premier League and a deal for German playmaker Wirtz is edging closer. They would have to break the Premier League transfer record to secure Wirtz's signature after Bayer Leverkusen priced the 22-year-old at £120million. Liverpool have offered £100m plus an extra £13m in add ons but the German side are holding out on a fee which would overtake the £115m which Chelsea paid Brighton for Moses Caicedo. The attacking midfielder has made it clear that Liverpool are his choice and a move is reportedly 'considered a done deal'. The Reds will also spend big on Wirtz's salary, with the German set to be handed a five-year contract worth £355,000-a-week, according to Bild. The enormous salary would make him Liverpool's second highest paid player, above the £350,000-a-week Virgil van Dijk earns, but just below Mohamed Salah's weekly £400,000 earnings. Although Liverpool will have to break the bank for Wirtz, he previously admitted he is not motivated by money. 'I don't even care about how much money I have in my account or what I might earn in the future,' he told Sports Illustrated Germany this year. 'Of course, you should make sure you get a good contract. But for me, the sporting perspective is much more important than the money. 'And I think my parents would be angry if I were too fixated on money. After I moved to Leverkusen at 16, my parents managed my salary and sent me €150 (£126) a month. 'That shaped me. It was important to my parents that I didn't do anything stupid with my salary.' The German star is edging closer to an Anfield switch and has been convinced by Slot's clear plan of where he will play in Liverpool's set-up as a No 10. And on Wednesday, Wirtz appeared to nod when asked by MailSport if he was 'excited for Liverpool ' after Germany's Nations League defeat by Portugal. Wirtz would become Liverpool's third signing of the summer, and their second from Leverkusen after the champions scooped Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m. The right wing back penned a five-year contract at Anfield last week after completing his medical last month.

'Tensions between Andy Carroll and ex Billi Mucklow are set explode' as he shares holiday snaps with girlfriend Lou Teasdale while she's at home with their children
Tensions between exes Andy Caroll and Billi Mucklow are reportedly set to explode over his sun-soaked holiday with new girlfriend Lou Teasdale. The ex-Liverpool striker, 36, and his former TOWIE star ex Billi, 36, confirmed their split last September after secretly separating earlier in the year after being together for 11 years. Weeks later Andy and celebrity hairstylist Lou, 42, revealed their relationship and now he is reportedly set on tying the knot with her. Andy and Lou are currently on holiday together in Ibiza and have been sharing several loved-up snaps from the trip. According to The Sun, this has not gone down well with Billi's closest friends who are furious with how her ex is behaving while she is at home with their children. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. A source said: 'Everyone thinks Andy is acting like an utter p***k and is making himself look like a total fool posting so many sexy shots with Lou - who he moved on with alarmingly quickly after separating from the mother of his kids. 'While he is off gallivanting around the party island, posting all these snaps that scream 'we are having hot sex!', Billi is at home looking after not only their children, but his two kids from a previous relationship with ex-fiancee Faye Johnstone. 'It's a silent gut-punch to Billie, who is an angel and adores the kids - looking after them and protecting them from this circus is her number one priority.' Andy and Billi have three children together Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship. Billi regularly shares photos of all five children to her Instagram and her pals are said to be furious she's holding down the fort at home while Andy lives it up with Lou. The insider said the situation feels 'disrespectul' but Billie is trying to hold her head high and carry on looking after the kids. Billi's legal team is reportedly working out the details of her divorce from multi-millionaire footballer Andy and sources say she has 'no interest' in dating anyone new for the time being. MailOnline has contacted representatives of Billi and Andy for comment. Andy and Lou are currently on holiday together in Ibiza and have been sharing several loved-up snaps from the trip In 2022, Andy's wedding to Billi was almost called off when he was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Billi forgave him after one of the women insisted nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over - with Andy confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Despite claims Billi was 'blindsided' by the relationship, friends of hers say that she 'knew Andy had someone' but she just wasn't sure who it was. She found out shortly before the romance was made public. Weeks later Andy made his relationship with Lou public in October for a Halloween party dressed as Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce. In January, Andy went Instagram with girlfriend Lou as he shared a cosy snap of the couple. It comes after Andy seemingly took a swipe at his estranged wife as he broke his silence over his new romance with Lou. Speaking to The Times Andy gushed: 'I've seen a different world since I've been with Lou, This Christmas, like she does every Christmas, she will go with her daughter to look after the isolated elderly. 'She's a volunteer for Choose Love and a campaigner for LGBTQ +. She says to me, "Why would you hate anyone?'" That's someone I need in my life.' It comes after Andy was reportedly caught entering his former Essex home without informing his estranged wife. The sportsman is said to have waited until she had left before going inside to collect some belongings. However, the home's security cameras alerted her to his presence through her phone. A source told The Sun: 'He was busted the moment he entered the property as Billi was alerted to his movements on their home CCTV, connected to her phone. 'She hadn't realised he was back from France and was understandably shocked and upset. She watched the whole thing unfold on her phone. She felt it was sneaky.' The pair, who married after an eight-year engagement, are in the process of selling their £8.5 million mansion, once owned by Sir Rod Stewart.

Chelsea 'hesitate' over signing £68m striker ahead of Liverpool
Chelsea are 'hesitating' over beating Liverpool to the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports in Germany. Chelsea are looking to squad ahead of the Club World Cup and the £30 million deal to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town was completed this week. Chelsea are also in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund over a deal for Jamie Gittens, who has agreed a seven-year contract with the Premier League side. Ekitike, meanwhile, has attracted interest following his impressive season with Eintracht Frankfurt in which he finished the campaign with 22 goals in all competitions. According to BILD, Chelsea remain in the running to sign Ekitike before the transfer deadline at 7pm next Tuesday, but the club still have reservations over moving forward with a deal. It's claimed that the key reason is Chelsea's valuation of Ekitike – Eintracht Frankfurt value the 22-year-old at €100m (£84.3m) but Chelsea are refusing to go beyond €80m (£67.4m). BILD also report that Liverpool are also interested in Ekitike but their main focus is to reach an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz. Last week, reports in Germany claimed that Liverpool had held initial talks over a move for Ekitike. Speaking on the final day of the Bundesliga season, Eintracht Frankfurt's sporting director, Markus Krosche, refused to rule out the prospect of selling Ekitike this summer. 'He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market. Hugo has to decide that,' Krosche told Sport 1. More Trending 'I'm glad we have him. If he decides otherwise, that's our motto – if a player develops faster than us, we let him go.' Earlier this week, Ekitike pulled out of France's Under-21s squad for their European Championship campaign due to a back injury. Chelsea, meanwhile, begin their Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC on June 16. Maresca's side will then play Flamengo on June 20 before finishing their Group D campaign against ES Tunis on June 20. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
