England thrash West Indies by 238 runs in opening ODI clash
England thrashed West Indies by 238 runs in Harry Brook's first match in charge as full-time captain to snap a seven-match ODI losing streak and move 1-0 up in the three-match series at a sunny Edgbaston on Thursday.
Put in to bat, England piled up 400-8 as Jacob Bethell smashed a destructive 82 in 53 balls and Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Brook all helped themselves to half centuries against a ragged West Indies attack.
It was the highest score England had amassed at home against West Indies in the 50-over format and it proved far too much for the visitors who capitulated in feeble fashion.
Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton both took three wickets with Brook taking five catches as the West Indies reply crumbled to 162 all out with only Keacy Carty and captain Shai Hope scoring more than 20 before an entertaining late cameo of 29 by number 11 Jayden Seales.
The second match in the series takes place in Cardiff on Sunday.

Joe Root hit his highest one-day international score, making 166 not out as England beat the West Indies by three wickets in Cardiff on Sunday. Victory gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of Tuesday's finale at the Oval, with Harry Brook enjoying a series win in his first campaign as England's full-time white-ball captain. England, chasing 309 to win, collapsed to 2-2 as openers Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett were both out for a duck. But star batsman Root's 18th century in 168 ODI innings saw England win with seven balls to spare ahead of Tuesday's finale at the Oval, despite West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph's fine return of 4-31 from his maximum 10 overs. Root received good support from Brook (47) in a stand of 85. Then Will Jacks (49) helped Root add 143 in 20 overs during a sixth-wicket partnership that took the hosts to the brink of victory. The West Indies were much-improved with both bat and ball following their humiliating 238-run loss at Edgbaston on Thursday. Despite the in-form Keacy Carty's 103, they were ultimately made to pay for not compiling a truly huge total when well-placed on 205-2 at Sophia Gardens. West Indies fined for slow over-rate in first ODI against England
The West Indies have been fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against England in the first ODI in Birmingham on Thursday. Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Shai Hope's side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. Hope pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Martin Saggers, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd leveled the charge.
