Nina Devlin, a spokesperson for Vertex, confirmed to the Globe on Wednesday that once the positions are terminated, there will be a total of approximately 60 employees remaining in Rhode Island.

As a result, 'certain roles related specifically to the VX-264 program have been eliminated,' according to Devlin.

'Vertex remains committed to bringing transformative therapies to people living with [type 1 diabetes] and to progressing our cell therapy program, zimislecel (VX-880), which is in Phase 3 development,' Devlin said.
The company currently operates out of three Providence buildings. Vertex plans to soon consolidate its operations into its site at 225 Carolina Ave. in Providence.
A publicly traded company, Vertex's headquarters are based in both Boston and London.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Vertex Pharmaceuticals is laying off 125 workers in Rhode Island. According to a Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) letter sent by Vertex to the R.I. Department of Labor and Training, the layoffs are effective Aug. 5. The company, which is located in Boston, has three buildings in Providence: two on Baker Street and one on Carolina Avenue. Vertex said the buildings 'operate as an integrated campus' and will be 'consolidated going forward.' 'We presently expect this action to be permanent,' Vertex's letter stated. Vertex said 140 total employees will be affected by the decision, with 125 being from its Providence locations. 'We value the contributions of every team member impacted, and we are committed to ensuring as smooth a transition as possible, including offering severance, consideration for internal opportunities, outplacement support and career counseling,' the company said.
