The disarmament of the first Palestinian camps in Lebanon will begin in mid-June in three Beirut camps, President Joseph Aoun confirmed Monday.
A joint Lebanese-Palestinian committee met for the first time last week following an accord between Lebanese and Palestinian leaders on disarming Palestinian camps as Lebanon seeks to impose its authority on all its territory.
The Lebanese and Palestinian sides agreed on starting a plan "to remove weapons from the camps, beginning mid-June in the Beirut camps, and other camps will follow," a Lebanese government official told AFP on Friday.
Lebanon hosts about 222,000 Palestinian refugees, according to the United Nations agency UNRWA, many living in 12 overcrowded official camps.
Most are descendants of Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their land during the creation of Israel in 1948.

Netanyahu 'successfully underwent routine colonoscopy' Friday: PM office

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the 75-year-old premier "successfully underwent a routine colonoscopy" at a hospital in Jerusalem on Friday. "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu successfully underwent a routine colonoscopy this morning at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem," a statement from his office said. It comes after the United States said Thursday that Israel had approved a new Gaza ceasefire proposal submitted to Hamas, but the Palestinian militant group said it failed to satisfy its demands. Zafer Nasser to LBCI: Backs Aoun's approach to Hezbollah arms, slams party's moral judgments

Progressive Socialist Party Secretary General Zafer Nasser voiced support for President Joseph Aoun's handling of the Hezbollah weapons issue, describing it as the most effective and reasonable approach compared to others. Speaking on LBCI's "Nharkom Said" TV show, Nasser said Hezbollah has no right to decide who is patriotic and who isn't, stressing that the party cannot grant 'certificates of nationalism' or accuse others of treason. Commenting on the municipal and local elections, Nasser explained that from the moment elections were announced, the party leadership decided to give local communities the freedom to make their own choices. 'We didn't run formal partisan lists in the traditional sense — it wasn't about the party fielding a list against another,' he said.
