At upcoming Central Vista National Museum, plans for a glass dome inspired by the Louvre

Indian Express20-05-2025

The upcoming Yuge Yugeen National Museum will have a massive glass dome as its central feature. On the lines of the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the dome, the first point of entry to the National Museum, will function as a holding area for visitors, with ticketing counters, souvenir shops, photo booths and cafes, The Indian Express has learnt.
While the iconic Louvre Pyramid is a landmark in Paris, the Louvre in Abu Dhabi has a glass dome. Sources said the Indian government, which has tied up with French Museums Development (FMD) for the project, is keen on a similar glass structure for the new National Museum.
The museum, expected to overtake the Louvre in Paris as the 'largest museum in the world' once it's ready, is a key part of the Central Vista Redevelopment Project. The glass dome is set to come up at a suitable point in the vicinity of the North and South Blocks, which currently house several key government offices, including the Prime Minister's Office, and the Home, Defence and Finance Ministries.
'With a planned surface area of 155,000 sqm, the museum is among the largest ongoing museum projects globally. France was invited to share its expertise as exemplified in several outstanding projects such as the Grand Louvre, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Grand Palais,' an official from the French Embassy in New Delhi told The Indian Express.
The Louvre Pyramid in Paris, a large glass-and-metal entrance way that stands in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace, came up in 1989 as part of the Grand Louvre project. The distinctive dome of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, designed by architect Jean Nouvel and inaugurated in 2017, is known for its 'rain of light' effect.
Sources said the dome at the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum will blend with the theme of the museum: '5,000 years of Indian civilisation'.
In December last year, India and France signed an agreement on the 'adaptive reuse' of the North and South Blocks – that is, the buildings would be repurposed for the museum project without demolishing them.
Sources said the Indian side wants to expedite the museum project. The project will be implemented in two phases — the first involves the retrofitting of North Block into a museum space, with an estimated deadline of June 2026.
Sources said the mapping of North Block has already been done in consultation with FMD and the building is expected to be free for retrofitting activities in three months. The plan is to get South Block too vacated this year. Sources said the PMO will be the first department to move out of South Block before the end of this year.
Officials said objects from the National Museum will be moved from their current location at Janpath only when the new building is ready to host them.
'The focus is now on finalising the content and exhibition design for the new project. The museum will be built as a single, coherent narrative and not separate fragmented galleries,' a source said.
Once North Block is vacated, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will restore the structure to its original state by removing all the additional walls, partitions and ceilings that came up over the decades. Records show North Block had around 400 rooms when the British inaugurated New Delhi in 1931, but over the years, partitions were added and the number of rooms doubled.

Mohandas Pai flags lack of domestic capital for Indian startups; urges policy overhaul; calls for stronger R&D support

NEW DELHI: Indian startups are struggling to grow due to limited domestic investment and restrictive government regulations, warned industry veteran and Aarin Capital Chairman Mohandas Pai, calling for urgent policy reforms and increased R&D funding to boost the ecosystem. He cautioned that despite India's position as the world's third-largest startup ecosystem, the nation could lose ground in global innovation if existing issues remain unresolved. "We have 1,65,000 registered startups, 22,000 are funded. They created USD 600 billion in value. We got 121 unicorns, maybe 250-300 soonicorns," Pai said in an interview to PTI. "The biggest issue for startups is the lack of adequate capital. For example, China invested USD 835 billion in startups and ventures between 2014 and 2024, US invested USD 2.32 trillion. We just put in USD 160 billion, out of which possibly 80 per cent came from overseas. So local capital is not coming in," he added. He further highlighted that while American insurance firms and university endowments significantly fund startups, Indian regulations prevent endowments from such investments, and insurance companies remain uninvolved due to incomplete regulatory framework. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bu bankalar başvuran herkese kredi kartı veriyor mu? Additionally, he noted that India's pension funds, holding Rs 40-45 lakh crore, cannot invest in startups due to conservative policies and regulatory restrictions. Pai emphasised the need to increase research funding in Indian universities substantially and urged organisations like DRDO to share their technologies with the private sector. He indicated that current research expenditure in public universities falls considerably short of global standards. "We need to remove barriers for startups to sell business to the government and public sector though the government has reformed it, it doesn't work in actual practice. It must be opened up, and I think that has to be a mind shift," the industry veteran continued. Pai further criticised the prevailing business culture in India, stating that, "The problem in India is that all the big companies try to beat down the small startups and give them less money, and force them to sell the technologies and use them, and often don't pay them on time.' "This culture of hurting the small people should change," Pai added. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students. Nifty, Bank Nifty's technical charts signal bullish momentum ahead: Report

Indian equity benchmarks Nifty and Bank Nifty closed the week on a positive note, showing signs of bullish momentum as both indices stayed above key support levels. The outlook for the coming sessions remains sideways to bullish, with analysts recommending a 'buy on dips' strategy, according to the latest weekly report by Choice Broking. The Nifty index ended the week at 25,003.05, up by 1.02 per cent. On the weekly chart, a strong bullish candle has formed with small wicks, indicating that buyers are active at lower levels. The index managed to close above the crucial 25,000 mark, suggesting growing strength and a possible upside in the near term. According to Choice Broking, Nifty is currently trading above all major exponential moving averages -- the 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day -- reflecting a strong uptrend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 60.94, which further supports bullish sentiment. A sustained move above 25,100 could trigger fresh buying, with potential targets seen at 25,300, 25,500, and even 25,700 in the coming weeks. The key support levels are marked at 25,000 and 24,800, where buyers are expected to emerge. On the other hand, call option data shows resistance around 25,100 and 25,300, aligning with technical resistance zones. Meanwhile, Bank Nifty posted an even stronger weekly gain, closing at 56,578.40, up by 1.49 per cent. The index is trading near record highs and has shown consistent strength above the 56,500 level, supported by strong trading volumes. The weekly chart for Bank Nifty also formed a solid bullish candle, with buyers clearly stepping in on dips. The index is trading above all key EMAs, indicating a healthy uptrend. The RSI for Bank Nifty stands at 67.45, hinting at continued bullishness. Choice Broking suggests a trading range between 56,000 and 57,500 in the coming week. Key support is seen at 56,500 and 56,000, while resistance is expected near 57,000 and 57,500. Stocks like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI are likely to support the uptrend within the banking space.
