EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Two Canutillo High School robotics teams have earned a spot at the 'largest robotics event in the world,' the Canutillo Independent School District announced in a news release.
The district said the two teams representing Canutillo High at the Texas Region 1 High School V5 Robotics State Championship earned a spot in the upcoming VEX World Competition, which will take place on May 6-8 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.
'Canutillo High School has long been a leader in the STEM competition, and this year has proven to be just as prolific as any other,' CHS robotics teacher Hector Acosta said. 'Our region gets only six invitations to Worlds, and Canutillo received two of those six.'
The teams going to the world competition are as follows, according to the district:
Team A – John Martinez, Evan Romero, Victoria De La Herran and Raquel Ramirez
Team B – Jalen Delgado, Emilio Mendoza, Lauren Orrantia and Oliva Concha
The district said the two teams used their skills to build robots that competed against otherschools in a course challenge.
Acosta said the competition tests students' engineering knowledge, but participants also are asked to use problem solving skills and teamwork.
The district said Canutillo's robotics teams have achieved several awards during the seven tournaments that make up the competition season this year. Some of those trophies include:
3 tournament championships
1 excellence award
2 skills awards
2 judges' awards
The season ended this past weekend during the regional state championship at Hanks High School, the district said.
'We are thrilled to be able to showcase the amazing work that has been happening in Canutillo at an international stage,' robotics teacher Jaime Campo said. 'The tournament in Dallas will attract teams from 50 different countries and this will give our students an opportunity to not only hold their own against the best of the best, but also learn from other students who also are doing outstanding work.'

Blue Origin completes 12th human flight to space

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Space technology company Blue Origin successfully completed its 12th human spaceflight and the 32nd flight for the New Shepard program on Saturday morning, May 31. The launch took place from the company's facility outside of Van Horn and took a human crew to the Karman line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The crew included: K-12 STEM teacher Aymette Medina Jorge; radiologist turned explorer Dr. Gretchen Green; former Panamanian ambassador to the United States Jaime Alemán; businessman Jesse Williams; aerospace executive Mark Rocket; and entrepreneur Paul Jeris. Including Saturday's crew, New Shepard has now flown 64 people into space — including four who have flown twice — among them scientific researchers, educators, physicians, explorers, and entrepreneurs. 'We thank our customers for trusting us to give them the opportunity to appreciate Earth's fragility from above, an experience that truly transforms those who embark on it,' said Phil Joyce, senior vice president of New Shepard. 'We look forward to seeing what our remarkable crew will do with this experience. I am proud of our team's dedication in making these moments possible.' Here is what Blue Origin said about the New Shepard program: 'Named after astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, New Shepard is Blue Origin's fully reusable, autonomous suborbital rocket system built to fly humans and scientific payloads to space. The rocket is powered by one BE-3PM engine, which is fueled by a highly efficient and clean combination of liquid hydrogen and oxygen. During flight, the only byproduct of New Shepard's engine combustion is water vapor, with no carbon emissions.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Socorro ISD earns district certification from National Institute for STEM Education

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Socorro Independent School District said it is the most recent district in the country to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence – District (NCSE-D) STEM certificate. Socorro ISD announced the recognition on Tuesday, May 27, in a news release. Socorro ISD said the district is the first in West Texas and one of only three in Texas in the nation to earn the district STEM certification. The certificate, which comes from the National Institute for STEM Education (NISE), recognizes districts for their commitment to continually improving districtwide systems and structures that support STEM educators and their students, Socorro ISD said. 'We are extremely honored to earn the national STEM certification, which validates the hard work and dedication among our faculty, staff and administrators to ensure that our students are receiving meaningful instruction and hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math,' Socorro ISD Interim Superintendent James Vasquez said. 'Our highly qualified teachers, campus and district leaders are achieving outstanding results integrating STEM instruction across all areas of student learning.' Socorro ISD said NISE, which is headquartered in Houston, Texas, was conceived by seasoned, practicing educators and is based on thousands of hours of research, professional development, curriculum design, and educational leadership. Using an online platform and supported by a dedicated NISE STEM leadership coach, educators and district leaders work together to refine district operations and instruction to further strengthen STEM practices and the district's overall STEM culture, Socorro ISD added. Socorro ISD said that as part of earning the NCSE – District Certification, along with over two years of sustained visioning, planning, and implementing STEM education system, three campuses also earned the NCSE – Campus Certification, and 97 teachers and administrators earned the National Certificate for STEM Teaching (NCST). Escontrias STEAM Academy was the first school in West Texas to earn the National Certificate for STEM Excellence – Campus Certification in July 2023, the district said. The district added that Sierra Vista STEAM Academy earned the certification in August 2024, and Montwood High School earned the certification in January 2025. 'I commend the district academics team and our STEM-certified schools who worked diligently to make this national certification a reality for our students and district,' Vasquez said. 'It demonstrates that SISD is a leader in STEM education dedicated to providing students the knowledge, skills and resources to excel in our competitive, science and technology-based society.'
