Marcos opens Palarong Pambansa 2025 in Ilocos Norte, cheers on future Filipino sports stars
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the opening of Palarong Pambansa 2025 in his home province of Ilocos Norte, marking the start of the country's biggest youth sports competition.
Thousands gathered at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Memorial Stadium in Laoag City on May 24 for the grand opening ceremony, which brought together athletes, coaches, and supporters from across the country.
In his remarks, Marcos praised the dedication and talent of over 15,000 student-athletes from 18 regions, telling them, 'We are all in awe of you—your skill, resilience, and commitment.'
He also emphasized the government's support for sports development, expressing hope that this year's games may reveal future Filipino champions.
'Someday, you may be the ones representing the Philippines in the Asian Games or the Olympics,' the President said. 'Among you could be the next Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo, Aira Villegas, Nesthy Petecio, EJ Obiena, or Alex Eala.'
This year's Palaro, which features 34 sporting events, will run until May 31.

Carl Gabriel de los Reyes posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Ethan Tan-Chi and Evaraigne Cruz added nine and seven points, respectively. With the championship win, Gilas Pilipinas Youth secured a spot in the upcoming FIBA U16 Asia Cup in Mongolia. They will be joined by fellow Southeast Asian qualifiers Indonesia and bronze medalist Malaysia.

The Filipino Club Basketball Group (FCBG) FIL Bahrain National Select Training Camp was successfully concluded on May 23, 2025 at the Muharraq Club Gym, Bahrain, a highlight in the development of high-level basketball talent in the Kingdom. Organized by FCBG and Filipino Coaches in the Gulf, the Al Khobar, Riyadh, Jeddah, and Bahrain players underwent tough high-level skills development, holistic tactics training, and interactive team-building activities. For the Head Coach Jojo Arpon, the camp was more than just developing sports skills, but also developing the discipline and a higher level of understanding of the game for those attending the camp. 'It is not merely designed to enhance athletic abilities but also aimed to instill discipline and deepen the participants' understanding of the sport,' Coach Jojo said. I was able to shape shots to work with the wind, which gave me an edge over my competitors. 'A big shoutout to Shane and the team at Al Ain Golf Club for maintaining such incredible course conditions. It's always been a course that suits my eye, and I'm grateful to have clinched another win there.' Rayan's consistent execution and tournament composure earned him UAE Clutch Pro Tour invitations, the next step in preparing for life on the professional tour. Transformative Period Reflecting on his recent progress, he said, 'The past four months have been a transformative period for me. 'After struggling with my swing following my second-place finish at the Faldo Series with a score of 6-under, and my win at the Yas Links Men's Open at 5-under, I committed to making significant changes to my game—particularly from tee to green and on approach shots.' With consistent gym work and technical refinement, Rayan's ball striking has reached a new level of precision and power. 'Much of the progress has come from my dedication in the gym," he says.
