BERLIN - Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he wanted to "build something" after taking over as head coach of Bayer Leverkusen on Monday.

Leverkusen were unable to keep up the same pace this season, but still finished Bundesliga runners-up to Bayern Munich and qualified for next season's Champions League.
Ten Hag has worked in German football before, spending two years in charge of Bayern Munich's reserve team from 2013.
The 55-year-old Dutchman won the FA Cup and League Cup in his two full seasons at United and led the club to third in the Premier League in 2022-23.
United launched a review last summer and interviewed other candidates after they finished eighth in the Premier League, only to decide to stick with Ten Hag.
But after a poor start to the season he was sacked on October 28 following a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.
Ten Hag rejected suggestions his time at United was unhappy, telling reporters his time at Old Trafford had been a "real pleasure", but added: "It's in the past. I want to look forward and build something, with new energy."
"I want to win, but in a specific style and manner. Dominant football, attractive football, which excites people. That's what we have here."
Before United, Ten Hag helped Ajax to win three Dutch league titles. Ten Hag has signed a two-year contract.
"With Erik ten Hag we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch," Leverkusen's sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said in a statement, calling his success at Ajax "exceptional".
"With three league titles and two domestic cup wins he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022.
"And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the ensuing success at Manchester United under difficult circumstances at times," added Rolfes.
German media reported Leverkusen were also interested in Cesc Fabregas, coach of Serie A side Como, but the former Barcelona and Arsenal player elected to stay in Italy.
'Attractive challenge'
Real Madrid announced on Sunday that Alonso will replace Carlo Ancelotti as coach in a long-expected move.
Alonso starred as a player for Real. He will take over on June 1 in order to lead the Spanish giants at the Club World Cup in the United States.
Alonso worked wonders at Leverkusen, taking the serial underachievers to the Bundesliga title for the first time in their 120-year history, despite having never managed at the top level.
Under Alonso, Leverkusen won the league title without losing a match in 2023-24; no club, not even the best Bayern sides or Jurgen Klopp's barnstorming Dortmund side, had gone through a league season without defeat.
Ten Hag faces a summer rebuild in Leverkusen, with several Bundesliga-winning stars heading out of the door.
Centre-back Jonathan Tah has already confirmed his exit after 10 years at the club, with Bayern his likely destination.
Midfield playmaker Florian Wirtz and wing back Jeremie Frimpong also look set to leave, with Rolfes confirming on Monday that Liverpool had shown "concrete interest" in Wirtz.
Liverpool are reportedly also set to snap up Frimpong.
While Tah will leave on a free transfer, Wirtz and Frimpong will command high fees, giving the Dutchman money to work with.
Asked if he had already drawn up a transfer wishlist, Ten Hag said: "I have many wishes."
Ten Hag will seek to rebuild Leverkusen alongside his own reputation, which took a hit during an unhappy time at United.
Calling Leverkusen "one of the best clubs in Germany," Ten Hag said he wanted to "continue the ambition shown in recent years".
"It's an attractive challenge to set up something together in this period of change and develop an ambitious team," he added. - AFP

Beckham Calls Out Man United Players' Malaysia Conduct

ENGLAND football legend David Beckham has criticised the uncivilised actions of several Manchester United players during their visit to Malaysia last week. Beckham, speaking to CBS Sports in an interview recently, indirectly referred to two players from the legendary club, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, who were captured showing disrespect towards fans during their Asian tour. 'I felt there were many things that were unacceptable as a Manchester United supporter. 'This is because most of them (players) behaved inappropriately towards the fans,' he said in the clip. It is understood that due to frustration over their defeat against the ASEAN All-Stars last Monday, both players from the popular club were recorded showing rude behaviour through obscene gestures towards their fans. Garnacho was seen making an obscene middle finger gesture at the time, whilst Diallo also made similar gestures and showed no remorse whatsoever for the shameful act. Meanwhile, Beckham also expressed disappointment over the matter. 'What happened does not reflect the values and dignity of this club,' he added. He said that as United players, responsibility towards the badge on their chest must be upheld, and he considered the club's players to have failed to conduct themselves properly. 'We always respected fans wherever we went, but it seems current players no longer understand what it means to play for Manchester United. 'What happens on the pitch is important, but attitude and conduct also reflect who we are as Manchester United players,' he said. Earlier, the iconic club recently ended a disappointing Premier League season with a brief Asian tour, including matches against the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong's national team. Three things for Xabi Alonso to ponder at Real Madrid

MADRID - Xabi Alonso is returning to Real Madrid with the former midfielder taking over as coach from Carlo Ancelotti and leading the team at the upcoming Club World Cup. AFP Sport looks at three areas the 43-year-old Spaniard will have to think about in the weeks and months ahead as he tries to plot a course back towards major trophies, with Los Blancos ending this season empty-handed. (Photo by OSCAR DEL POZO/AFP) Restore the balance Alonso's predecessor Ancelotti spent much of the last season complaining his team was unbalanced and also lacked "collective commitment". In short, the squad had too many attackers he felt he had to cram onto the field, while injuries left the defence in tatters and Madrid did not sign someone to replace midfielder Toni Kroos, who retired last summer. French superstar Kylian Mbappe's arrival at the end of his Paris Saint-Germain contract in 2024 was the big change for a Madrid side that won a Champions League and La Liga double. For a while he and Vinicius Junior struggled to play together, occupying the same spaces, and even though Mbappe grew comfortable down the middle, netting 43 goals across all competitions, their dual presence cost Madrid defensively. Alonso has to work out a way for the pair to work in tandem while still pressing effectively and making sure Madrid are not outnumbered when on the back foot. Veteran midfielder Luka Modric's departure after the Club World Cup means Alonso will be losing yet more poise, technique and wisdom from the midfield. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach has largely used a 3-4-3 formation which could suit Madrid's squad, particularly with the expected arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool and a deal already done for Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen. Handle the superstars If there was one particular task Ancelotti excelled at, it was keeping a dressing room full of big names and big egos happy. Ancelotti managed to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale in his first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu and then helped turn Vinicius into a superstar in his second. The Italian coach would sometimes baulk at suggestions he was a good man manager but not a tactical mastermind, but it should not be underestimated how important it is to keep people onside at Madrid. That includes president Florentino Perez, the star players, and even the media, all of whom Ancelotti handled supremely well. Alonso has an aura about him which could help in the same way it did for Zinedine Zidane, another former Madrid player who thrived at the helm. Stopping rampant Barca One of the nails in Ancelotti's coffin at Madrid was the way his team collapsed against their arch-rivals in all four Clasicos this season. Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win in La Liga in October to embarrass Madrid on home soil and lay down a marker of how the season was going to go. Their 4-3 victory in the return league match was what effectively dethroned Madrid and took the Spanish crown back to Catalonia -- and the score could have been wider without being unfair to Los Blancos. Barcelona also beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final and 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final as they completed a domestic treble and left Madrid reeling. Ancelotti's side could not cope with Hansi Flick's high defensive line and relentless pressing, and Alonso will already be studying the German's set-up to make sure Madrid fare far better next season in the crunch clashes. - AFP
